  1. As you guys have seen, northwestern has already sent out some admits. My app center says that no decision has been made yet. However, the uncertainty is killing me. Is it proper for me to contact the school and ask if they have completed sending out their admissions?
  2. I see, so it seems as though they've already made their decisions then. My app status still says that a decision has not been made yet, but I will assume it's a rejection.
  3. I see. I submitted mine about 3 days or so before the deadline, and my late rec letter was in about a week after. Did they say anything to you that might hint they were still admitting people? I'm so nervous.
  4. My applicant center still says no decision rendered. I could hardly sleep last night I'm so nervous!
  5. I'm applying to all Statistics PhD programs. For Umass though, I am applying to both the MS/PhD, so if they will consider me for the MS if I do not make the PhD cut
  6. And for what it's worth I'm terrified that I won't get into any of them (with funding)

  9. They admit so few students, i'm very worried. Who knows, maybe we will be the 2 new ones that enter.
  10. I wouldn't worry about it. I creeped on your stats and they seem similar to mine, so at least at this point I don't see a reason why they would necessarily prefer me over you. Maybe if one of your rec letter writers had been delayed, you would have seen the same message.
  11. I applied to Northwesterns Stats PhD program for fall 2013. The short of the story is, one of my rec letter writers was delayed in submitting my letter. I received a message on my application center from a grad secretary (strangely enough, from the math dept.) and she notified me that it had not been uploaded. She then said that she was "asked to let me know that they are very interested in my application". How does this seem? Is this cheap talk, or is there some truth here? Thanks.
  12. Fortunately, I did get in A in Linear Algebra (which seems to be super important for admissions), and I have gotten A's in the 4 statistics classes I have taken. My biggest issue is that I only got a 159Q on my GRE, so I am worried that with the C+ in this class will be a serious detriment to my application. I did already submit my transcripts. I received my grades in early December, and every program I've applied to has had a deadline of December 31st or later, so they will see my grades. Thanks for your input. It is inconsistent both in general, and specific to this semester (as noted before, I had 4 A's and 1 C+ for this semester). I really wish that schools were more standardized in their teaching of classes. That way, adcoms would have a general idea of how the class was. It's infuriating to have an absolutely terrible professor blow your grade in a super important class, without adcoms knowing. Personally I think that teacher evaluations should be noted next to your grade in a specific class.
  13. This is exactly what I was afraid of. I'm not applying to the top schools though. My targets are in the 30-50+ range (Rutgers, Vtech, Virginia, Michigan State, Connecticut, U of Iowa, UMass, some others)
  14. Greetings, I promise that I am not one to blame poor performance in a class on a professor, but in this case I have no choice. The short of it is that he was just simply terrible (1.4 rating on rate my professors, if you give that weight) and although we had average test scores in the 30's (the section not being taught by him had them in the 80's by contrast) there was no curve. The class was Real Analysis, and my final grade ended up being a C+. I know that this class is very important, and so it worries me greatly that I got a C+. I did, however, receive 4 A's (so I got 4 A's and 1 C+). Do you think Adcoms will look at these grades and think something odd was going on with that class? Thank you
  15. Hey guys, I "finished" my SOP about a week ago, and thus far I have been pretty happy with it. However, I'm still anxious about it not being up to par, and I was hoping you guys might have some constructive criticisms/comments. Thanks. I am presently a senior Economics major and Mathematics minor at -------- University and I expect to graduate this upcoming May, 2013, with a Bachelor’s of Science with Honors in the Arts and Sciences. During my course of study at ------, I have been introduced to a wide range of mathematical and statistical concepts, and I have enthusiastically committed myself to furthering my knowledge and understanding of them. However, an undergraduate education has understandable thematic and conceptual constraints. Therefore, I am determined and eager to continue my studies by pursuing a Ph. D in Statistics. I first realized my deep interest in the subject when I took an introductory course at the beginning of my Junior year. Following the initial set of lectures, I was completely absorbed by the material. I was especially attracted to the interdisciplinary nature and wide scope inherent to Statistics, particularly, the ability of its concepts and methods to make sense and inferences out of seemingly indecipherable sets of data from any field. Given my academic background, Statistic’s constant use of mathematical tools and principles as the basis underlying the analyses of data was instrumental in cementing my interest. Furthermore, Statistics provides an intriguing dynamic between theory and application that is matched by few other disciplines. It is not restricted to its own theoretical paradigms, but rather has the capacity to delve into the framework of other subjects, utilizing and maximizing their ideas. Thus, it has the ability to extrapolate information not only from statistical theories, but also from those related to other fields, and apply them to gain insight into almost any problem. In sum, the study of Statistics represents an intensely stimulating and satisfying academic endeavor, and I am continually amazed by its depth, power, and applicability. Although I am fascinated by all aspects of the discipline, I am particularly interested in exploring and learning about statistical inference theory and spatial statistics. Since the ability to make educated conclusions from data is so central to the field, I want to significantly expand my knowledge in this area. Specifically, I want to investigate alternative methods of drawing inference, with a focus on a Bayesian approach. In addition, I am interested in exploring more advanced methods for correcting conditions that cause inferences to be invalidated. I am also deeply curious about spatial statistics, both in its theory and its application, as it provides new and exciting methods to push the boundaries of the field. My goal is to pursue a career in academia, as it would allow me to combine my passion for scholarship with my interest in teaching. Moreover, academia is perhaps the ideal medium in which I can be an integral part of new and exciting research, and truly be an important contributor to the field. I believe that a career in research consistently offers fulfilling challenges in problem solving and learning. I am applying to ------- because I am confident that it would be the best institution to further develop my intellectual skills and to fulfill my research aspirations. I have examined your department extensively, and I am drawn in by the quality of the faculty and their scholarship. My academic interests align well with your department’s areas of specialization. In terms of character, I believe intensely that a relationship of professionalism and collaboration among graduate students and faculty is essential to creating an environment conducive to research and learning. I am confident that given the opportunity I will be a solid contributor to maintaining such an atmosphere, both through my scholarship and collegiality.   16. You gave 10-12 POI's? How large were those departments? I also didn't include any POI's. A family member of mine in academia actually suggested against it, because of rivalries among professors. I.e. if you mention professor A, professor B might vote against your application because they do not like professor A. It seems fickle (and it is) but apparently this goes on.
  17. I e-mailed the admissions office, and they asked me to send in the correct copy. Hopefully the correct copy will be with my application!
  18. I submitted several applications today, and in one of them in my SOP I accidentally referred to school x as being school y. Since my application was submitted, there is no way for me to change it through my application. Is there anything that I can do about this?

Here are their admissions stats for Statistics http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/documents/Program%20Statistics%20Files/S25PH_adm_enr.pdf There is definitely a large upward trend in terms of applications, but they are still admitting about 5%-10% of applicants, which I think is higher than most schools.
  20. Is Northwestern difficult to get into? I know it is a very small department, but according to US News it is only ranked 48 for Statistics. I was viewing it as a "safer" place to apply.
  21. If your GPA is below a 3, you might want to try getting admission into a masters program first, and doing well (4.0) and then applying after you finish.
