The Fulbright process is an odd one, I have applied the past two years under the scholar program (been working 5 years past graduate school) and have been selected twice as an alternate. Last year, I looked at the proposal selected (they only selected one) and it was a basic idea, nothing too impressive. I spoke with Fulbright and here is what I was told.  You could have the best idea, the most thorough proposal, but in the end it comes to fresh idea much of the time. The proposal selected last year had not been done ever, thus it was selected. My proposal idea (intelligence) was done is another form two years prior. Though, they said if your proposal is making it this far, it reads well. Resubmit with a tweek here and there.   One thing they told me, is to  make mention if this being your 3rd time applying, as Fulbright is big on tenacity and determination.

Well I will join in on this good luck above and I have applied three times twice selected as an alternate, and this last year not even past the first round with the same project i was selected as an alternate with twice. Only difference is I have been in private sector working after school for 5 years so i have to apply as a research scholar. Thus, I am competing for one grant, unlike the ETA's. So the alternate was positive given the number of applicants, lets hope this year is better. Though I will add, I put in this past year project i applied twice before and was selected as an alternate. So not sure if ti worked against me. I will leave out this time for sure.

    Good luck all!!!!!

I am very sorry to hear that. You know I didn't even get recommended. Odd!!!!!! two years in a row recommended and selected as an alternate and not even into the second round. For future, and i know this was a topic in this forum, this go around, deciding on whether or  not to put you were selected as an alternate prior. I did that this time, and maybe it was not a factor, but next time a I AM LEAVING IT OUT!!!!!!!!...    We will seee!!!!!!!!!

you know I would take into account all areas and potential security risk. An area with a high level of threat, could be off the table. Hate to see one apply and then see it all go to waste.

You know I would add in somewhere how this your third time applying, well i would have to see your proposal to give you exact advice, but look for little difference you could switch around, maybe juggle the words a bit.. That's would really be it and re-submit..That's all I will do. I will put in the beginning how I am tenacious in my pursuit of a Fulbright as the last two years I have been short listed for an interview and selected each time as an alternate. I want the reviewers to see it. The first paragraph is best suited for that. Who know how far they read. Of course in thinking, they could be like, ahhh twice and no select as primary.. ahhh no more short list.. so im thinking either in the front or in the end, and ram it home in the interview.

Any advice on where to put it? I put that to the forum

For those interested, the young professional program for the United Nations test will be December 2015..Great program to look into.  I was an alternate two years in a row for a Fulbright Scholar grant..Different then the ETA, as I've been working for past 5 years after graduate school. I am fighting for 1 grant, so it's little harder. Anyhow,  I'm a bit irritated, but oh well!!!!! things work out in the end. I was just offered a job with the UN in Vienna. Thus, I am leaving the US in a month to start.. Great job, with the locality pay, 95,000 euros a year to start.. Anyways, I will try one more year for the Fulbright, but I will do it in conjunction with my job, and teach at a University in Vienna..

I did not go through the YPP program, but I see it as I have progressed through this process.

Really consider grad school in Europe. I went to a university in the Netherlands for my Masters, and am now doing an external PH.D program there. I work full time so the External way is the only way I can do it. Essentially, I go there twice a year, more so to teach class related to my subject matter expertise (terrorism) and work on my project with my supervisor. The program is costing me 0$. If you can buckle yourself down and work independently this is the way to get the PH.D. My Fulbright project revolves around my dissertation subject. Anyways, just a thought for all those in here looking at graduate school

Well applied for Research Award under the professional grant. Notified in second week on February I was an alternate as i was number two and they funded one, not two. At that time they stated no funding for two.. Well something fell through the cracks as funding came through and I am now selected for UK. So I was an alternate for almost two months.. See it can happen.. Next time i should of gone for grants where there are 5 or 6 selected.  Trying for one or two is hard..

This was what  I received Nov 6th.

" It is a pleasure to inform you that the peer review process organized by IIE’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) has been completed and that you are among those recommended for a Fulbright research award in United Kingdom.
Please know that this peer review process constitutes only the first phase of the rigorous review process Fulbright applicants undergo. CIES will next forward your application to: the United States-United Kingdom Educational Commission in United Kingdom, to the U.S. Department of State and to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for final consideration. Applications will be reviewed in light of program priorities and budget. Not all applications that were recommended in the peer review process will be selected for grants."   This is only the beginning of the letter: The middle discusses things to not do at this stage lie book travel. The letter ends like this:     "On behalf of CIES, please accept my heartfelt congratulations on having successfully completed the first stage of the Fulbright review process. Thank you for your interest in the Fulbright Scholar Program and in its important mission, and best wishes for you and your work."   Anyways good luck to all
