  1. I am still trying to figure out what to get my recommenders. One is my adviser, who is very kind, a wonderful mentor and somewhat reminds me of my grandfather. The other is someone I have done research with for nearly two years. She was the first person I met here when I first moved down, two months before my MA program started. She has also been a wonderful mentor, and is very motherly. Whatever I give them I feel has to go beyond a simple gift for writing me a thank you letter, because they have done so much for me over the past two years. I just haven't figured out what to do in order to show my extreme gratitude.
  2. I am currently waitlisted at one of my top choice schools. They let in five people, and I am third on the waitlist, so I have no idea what that means in terms of my chances of getting in. I've gotten in one place already, although it was an unofficial acceptance and have no idea what the funding situation will be. I still waiting to hear back from another school. My adviser has told me wait until April 15 to make my choice in order to weigh all of my options.
  3. I've learned to hate weekends. Not that I will necessarily hear back from any of my remaining programs on any given day during the rest of the week. But with work days at least there is that hope that I might here something.
  4. Lappleton, good luck to you as well!
  5. That is what I was originally thinking. But searching through the results from previous years, it seems that they have released decisions in mid-late February in the past.
  6. Thanks so much Lappleton! I hate that the status is so vague. Recommended by whom for what? I hope that it is a sign of something good to come, but I'm trying not read too much into it. I really don't want to get my hopes up just to have them crushed if I get rejected. I really hate that it is a three day weekend and I might have to wait until Tuesday to know more.
  7. Lappleton, yes the University of South Carolina. Did you apply there as well? I regret finding the status checker website. I find myself looking at it all too often, although yesterday was the first time I noticed any change.
  8. I just noticed last night that my application status at South Carolina changed from new to recommend. However it still says pending under admissions decision. Does anyone know what this change in status might mean? I hate waiting!
  9. Did anyone else apply to South Carolina? My application status changed yesterday from new to recommend, although the admission decision still says pending. Did this happen to other people? What does it mean, if anything?
  10. Wednesday Me: So I got into one of the schools I applied to. Yay! Friend: Congrats! When do you hear back from your other schools. Me:Probably not until late next week at the earliest. Friday Same Friend: Have you heard back from any other schools? Me: No. I probably won't know any more until sometime late next week. Today Same Friend: Have you heard back from any other schools?
  11. This. With me its mostly been bargain hunting at the local Goodwill, but even bargains add up over time. Also I've gone back to needlepoint, which is something I did all the time in high school, but stopped once I got to college. It is extremely monotonous, but it keeps me busy.
  12. 1. I do not think this can be stressed too much: do not reread your applications once you have submitted them. You will notice all of the flaws in them that somehow you missed before pressing the submit button. All this will do is lead to weeks of agony as you wait to hear back from all the schools you are sure will now reject you. 2. Mistakes, even in a SOP, are not the end of the world. If you come off as a strong candidate with clear goals, drive, and ambition schools will not necessarily reject your application just because you made a typo or two. 3. Do not apply to somewhere you would not want to go to if you got in. If you would hesitate to go somewhere, even if it is your one acceptance, it is not worth applying to. 4. Do not apply somewhere that does not fit your interests, even if it is a top ranked school. You may have stellar credentials, but if you do not actually fit into the department, chances are you will not get in. All you are doing by applying is wasting time and money. 5. When trying to figure out where to apply to, start by identifying what it is you want to study. Then try to find which schools have professors with similar research interests. Talk to your adviser about your interests and life goals, and see if he or she can offer up any programs to look into.
  13. I have been loosing my mind, especially since the beginning of February. I've been constantly checking my email and this site for any updates on the programs to which I applied. I had no idea what I would do if I didn't I get into any of these programs and could not bear to make myself start looking for jobs. I finally heard back from two schools today. I got wait-listed at one but got into the other, so that is a huge load of my mind.
  14. Hi, I've also been a lurker for a while. I'm finishing up my MA and applying to five PhD. programs. My concentration is the 18th and 19th century Chesapeake/Mid-Atlantic. This waiting process has been miserable for me. The seemingly endless wait has just caused a lot self-doubt and anxiety about everything I may have done wrong on various applications. Today I finally heard back from two schools. I got wait listed at one and I got into the other, so I can now stop worrying about what I will do if I don't get in anywhere. I'm still waiting to hear back from the other three schools, including my top choice.
