  1. Thanks so much! I was just slightly worried about future job prospects. My adviser has assured me that the people I want to work with are very well connected and known in their field. I guess I am just slightly scared because it is a new program. Also I am a bit hesitant because I did my MA at a school with a new PhD program, and the first few years of that program were apparently a bit rocky due to lack of faculty support and funding. I did not really consider these potential drawbacks while I was applying. I only concentrated on finding programs that I thought I fit in with. I have realized that I missed a few schools I could have applied to although neither they nor the other school I got into match my interests as well as South Carolina. South Carolina was my second choice (I'm waitlisted at my first). I guess I just have cold feet.
  2. I just wanted to bump this up because I feel like it is getting progressively harder being waitlisted at my top choice. This was the place I have wanted to go for years, and I keep thinking off all the things I could have done to make my application a little better. And I can't stop comparing the schools I have gotten into to this school, in terms of both the funding and the variety of courses and training offered. For some reason this waiting is making me less content with my acceptances, and wishing that I had applied to more reach schools.
  3. Recommend means that the graduate admissions committee for your department has recommended a decision as to whether or not you have been accepted. Out of curiosity, have you seen any acceptances for the South Carolina program to which you applied? If you haven't, there is a good chance that these status changes mean that you have been accepted, as the acceptances seem to show up in South Carolina's system before the rejections.
  4. I have been accepted into the University of South Carolina's PhD program with funding and a fellowship nomination. I am interests are in historical archaeology, free blacks communities and the Melungeons, creolization, resistance and the cultural construction of race. When trying to choose PhD. programs, I looked for programs that were strong in historical archaeology, had a POI whose interests aligned with my own, and where I also felt I fit into the department. I did not really consider rankings. In many ways I felt that South Carolina's program provided one of the best fits. I am a bit about future job prospects though because while its MA program has been around for a while, the PhD. program is still fairly new. Can anyone tell me about the reputation of the program?
  5. This was a professor with whom I had been in contact before and the person I was hoping would be my adviser if I were to attend. You could try contacting the Director of Graduate Studies or Graduate Coordinator explaining your position and asking if they could tell you where you are on the waitlist.
  6. I'm going through the same thing. Waitlisted at my top school which only accepts 5 students in archaeology. I was told by POI that I had been waitlisted so I asked him my position on the list.
  7. I feel the same way sometimes. But then I end up wondering if the people ahead of me on the waitlist are feeling the same way as well, especially if they have good offers. That thought just makes me want to stay on the waitlist even more.
  8. That's what I keep thinking as well. It is so hard being waitlisted at your top choice.
  9. I didn't think they could do that either. My adviser assures me that I have no obligation to make a commitment until April 15 and they cannot ask me to commit sooner. I'm just glad I have his support in this matter.
  10. I have been playing around with that a cost of living calculator. Even with cost of living taken into account, the funding is less than others have to offer. I've been told that living off of the funding is tight but doable. Other than the funding issue, the program is perfect in so many ways. It is probably a better fit for me, I love the way it is structured, and the person I would be working with is probably the best person to work with for my research.
  11. I'm in the same situation. Waitlisted at my top school and would take it in a heartbeat if I am offered. But the uncertainty is driving me nuts and I'm not sure how well I will do with waiting another month and a half. On top of that, one of my schools has asked me to decide by March 15.
  12. Thanks so much for the advice everyone. I actually contacted someone at the school with the program I prefer and I found it very helpful. It helped assuage some of the fears I've had.
  13. So I got into my second choice school. This school would be perfect for me. I fit the program really well and there is some one there who's interests line up exactly with my own. I received their funding offer and it was a lot less than I was hoping for and a lot less than other programs in my area tend to offer (by a couple thousand dollars). I really want to go, but the funding is a major concern for me. They nominated me for a fellowship, which would bump up my funding by a lot, but I have no idea what the chances of getting it are. I've gotten into one other school. I don't know the funding package yet, but it does not excite me as much as when I first applied and I'm not sure I want to attend. It is a well established program but the fit isn't as great. I am currently number 3 on the waitlist for my top choice school, but I have no idea what the chances of getting in are. I don't know what to do. The stress is really killing me. Any advice? What do you do when a perfect school offers poor funding.
  14. That is what is going on with William & Mary too, for anyone who may have applied there. The sent out their first three offers about two weeks ago. They have a waitlist, but have not informed those who are on it of their position. Rejections have not been sent out either.
  15. It has a very, very solid reputation in archaeology, at least according to my adviser. Actually he said that it is considered to be one of the best archaeology schools, and it extremely difficult to get into. Robert Preucel and Robert Schuyler are major names in archaeology, and there seem to be a number of other archaeologists on the faculty. Some major names in Archaeology today graduated from Penn. It might depend on your concentration and the state school. Are we talking about Berkeley and Michigan? In most cases, if Penn will fully fund you, yes it would definitely be worth it turn down the state school.
  16. I'm currently having this problem. I got the official acceptance letter from one of my two second choice schools but am currently waitlisted at my first choice (I haven't heard from the other second choice, but I think they've rejected me). If I got into my first choice school, I would accept their offer right away. But I might not know anything until April 15. Second choice school is on the list of schools who have entered into this agreement, but wants me to decide by March 15.
  17. Somebody posted a Maryland accept on the results search. If you posted that, were you contacted by your POI or the DGS? I was told that results would be sent out later this week.
  18. My friend was accepted for into the PhD. program not the MA/PhD.
  19. For those of you who applied to William & Mary, I have a friend who just got an acceptance.
  20. Does anyone know when decisions from Maryland might be released? The application deadline was December 15. I'm pretty sure that I've been rejected, but it would still be nice to get something which confirmed that and I'm slightly nervous about asking the graduate program coordinator.
  21. I would say that is a wonderful sign! Good luck
  22. A PhD. student in my current program has done field work for two years with her POI from a school she decided not to attend. I've been talking with my POI from the school I am currently waitlisted at, and he let me know that he would be happy to work with me in an informal manner, such as an outside reader for my dissertation, if I don't end up at his school. I know in my current program, it is not uncommon for people to have dissertation committee members from other schools. From what I've seen, it is definitely possible to keep in touch with a POI even if you end up attending another school.
  23. It was actually a personalized and quite friendly letter from the DGS congratulating me. I am interested in the historical archaeology of the African Diaspora focusing on resistance and free blacks. I applied to South Carolina because I felt that they were strong in both of those areas. I was hoping to either work with either Dr. Weik or Dr. Kelly.
