  1. bluecheese be killin' it. What do you plan to specialize in blue?
  2. Maybe girl who wears glasses is an enlightened zen master, incapable of such banal feelings as being "put out" or "envious." Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks!
  3. That's not what I'm saying. The point of being competitive isn't wishing other people will fail, it's wanting to be BETTER than other people. That means pushing yourself and feeling badly when you don't measure up. It means striving for excellence and not being satisfied with mediocrity. It means that if someone else gets into a place that you don't get into, you feel envious of them because YOU WANT TO BE BETTER, not because you want them to be worse. I'm pretty sure you have to have that kind of drive to make it in academia. At the very least, it really helps.
  4. Is it weird that I'm so competitive that even on grad cafe I compete with people in my head for upvotes and page views and star ratings and shit? That's just how I am. Therefore I assume other people are a bit more competitive than they let on. But hey, maybe you guys aren't. Good on ya!
  5. Honestly, do we really feel good for anonymous admits? Why would we have any reason to sympathize with their good news? Don't we secretly feel envious and angry that it wasn't us being admitted? Let's be real people
  6. Everyone stop assuming you've been rejected from places. Wait for the places to tell you themselves that you've been rejected.

  13. Unless you are reading your own self-help book, in which case i'd consider that gloating rather than procrastinating.
  14. It only took me an hour to read and it helped me procrastinate for exactly that long.
  15. And then if you don't get in they pity you and say "better luck next year" and secretly feel vindicated for not applying to grad school themselves. There's no winning.
  16. "When do you hear back? We'll have a party to celebrate." Perhaps
  17. So it's officially Monday. What do you think will happen today you guys? Good things? Bad things? Nothings?
  18. You guys, have you read this book The Defining Decade? I figure most of us are in our twenties so it applies directly to us. It may make you feel a lot better about yourself (for the wrong reasons from what the author intends). If you want to read a review of it, here's a link: http://citisociology.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-review-defining-decade.html
  19. February is the drunkest month.
