  1. I attended Cambridge over the summer and during a Q&A session about grad school, they specifically stated that a UK masters is not equivalent to a US masters, but a UK PhD is equivalent to a US PhD. So unless your goal is to get the masters in the UK, then work in the UK, you'd be better off opting for a PhD out there or staying in the US for a masters. This is just my understanding, hopefully it helps.
  2. 25, finishing my UG right now. It will be refreshing to be around people my age and older in grad school =]
  3. The data must be wrong by a year or something. I could see them potentially having data about number of admitted, but there's no way they could predict how many admits will matriculate at this point in the cycle. Very odd indeed.
  4. The email was from Belinda and I also received a packet of information in the post. My stats aren't anything too special; I did particularly mediocre on the GRE, I think it was my LORs and SOP that helped me stand out in this process. Stats: transfer student, GPA-3.90, GRE-V158/Q159/A4.5, ~6mo significant research experience, no papers (yet).
  5. I received notification of acceptance on January 27th, but I seem to be the only one in the forum who has heard anything from Cornell. My guess is that they're doing rolling admissions. Their recruitment weekend is March 7th, so there's still plenty of time to hear back before then. Best luck to you.
  6. I just got the email today! Recruitment weekend is March 21-24. I called earlier in the week and they said they'll still be releasing decisions through March. Rolling decisions suck, but hold on hope.
  7. There's two weekends, one next week (Feb 15th) and another the week after that (Feb 22nd). Hopefully you'll hear back soon!
  8. I don't think time of submission has much to do with it (unless you submit super early and the school does rolling admissions). Example: I submitted my UMich application a few hours before the deadline and I was in the first batch to hear back on January 11th.
  9. Just got an invite to interview at UW!! Been waiting so long on this one This has been a very successful admissions cycle for me, I'm completely shocked by how much good news I've received. Best of luck to those still waiting.
  10. For those stressing like me, I called UW (Seattle) and got some updates. The AC is still reviewing applications and said they plan on releasing more decisions in March, with recruitment activities planned for March 22-23. There is still hope!
  11. Anyone else still waiting on UW? I'm wondering if I should contact them
  12. 13. I'm also still waiting on UWashington. The rolling decisions are painful haha.
  14. Some decisions for Cornell have been released!! ****stoked*** I'm still waiting on: Caltech, Pitt, UCSD, and UW Stats: 3.90 gpa at UCSD, good LORs, 6mo solid research, sweet senior design project, GRE - Q159/V158/A4.5
  15. I'm waiting too! Hoping this week will bring some news.
  16. humdrum life
  17. Thanks for the advice everyone! The schools I named are excellent research fits for me, so I'm moving forward with applications and I'm gonna start emailing potential PI's as ghanada recommended. I'm glad the internet exists, y'all make me feel better =]
  18. I would send in both scores to all schools you are applying to. That way they'll see that you worked hard to improve your Q and V, and I'm sure they'll understand that the new AW score was just a fluke (especially if your SOP is well written too).
  19. One of my strong letter writers is only willing to send out six letter on my behalf and thus, I must only apply to 6 schools. These are my stats: Undergrad Institution: UCSD (top bioE program) Major(s): BioE GPA in Major: 3.90 Overall GPA: 3.90 Position in Class:top 5% Type of Student:American female GRE Scores: Q 159 (77%) V 158 (77%) W 4.5 (74%) Research Experience: 2 months biosensor lab, 6 months cell culture, and 6 months cellular biosensor senior design project Pertinent Activities or Jobs:leadership in BMES, leadership in TBP, constructing electrophoresis box for HIV detection in Africa with EWH, VP Physics and Engineering Club at CC. Miscellaneous: Studied at Cambridge University over the summer, I have an awesome story to tell in my SOP about how I went from being an English major at CC to pursuing a PhD in bioE after at life changing event. With my lackluster GRE scores, I feel that I should probably apply to 3 'dream' schools and 3 'backup' schools. [And yes, these are my scores after studying for months and retaking the GRE. My first scores were 158, 157, 4.0 and it totally sucked to only see my scores only go up one point after all the work I did. It seems I just get really anxious on standardized tests. Boo.] Currently, I'm having a hard time deciding if it's even worth applying to some of my dream schools (Caltech, Cornell, Ann Arbor). For example, I called Caltech and ensured that they don't have a GRE cutoff, but it's hard for me to convince myself that I have a chance without 90th% or greater in quantitative. What do you all think? How do you decide whether it's worth applying or not? Should I apply to the next school(s) on my list instead?
