  1. Haha. This made me laugh. Who is that? My icon? Well, the icon is a picture of me.
  2. Oh, goodness, I know! Usually after I submit an application, I refuse to look at it again for fear I might find a mistake...
  3. This was a few pages back, but I wanted to add my own little story of cultural misunderstanding. While I was in Russia last year, I lived in a home stay. My host mother told me that joining the choir would be good for language practice. Well, the Russian word for choir is "хор" khor so it is kind of pronounced like "whore." I was processing the suggestion she made, but to her, it must have looked like I did not understand what she said, so she yelled "KHOR!!!" at me. XD
  4. From what I have been able to gather so far (well, over the course of the last two months) is that all countries that have been notified had its own Fulbright commission. The only country I have seen that does not have its own commission, if I remember correctly, is Laos that we have heard from. I also just get the impression that all notifications are going to be late this year.
  5. Congratulations! *refresh* *refresh*
  6. I am starting to have the feeling that no day will be "the day." I guess I will be all the more surprised when I do find out, for better or worse.
  7. Listening comprehension is actually the easiest aspect of a language for me. I am not very good with translation. I can understand what someone says, but ask me to tell you in English what someone said in Russian, it would take me awhile. I find speaking one of the hardest, but having gone to Russia has taught me to just speak and worry about it being grammatically perfect later. I guess that is both a blessing and a curse.
  8. German has three cases, right? Or is it four? It has been years since I have taken German. Russian has six cases: nominative, prepositional, accusative, genitive, dative, and instrumental. Woohoo! Cases are not terribly difficult once you get the gist of them. One of the hardest aspects of Russian are all the rules surrounding verbs of motion. I am fourth year student and still have some trouble with those. But I like it.
  9. Oh my goodness. Prepositions. There are so many in Russian. They all take different cases and that can change depending on context. Oh, well, I like grammar. Usually. XD
  10. Yes, I have been working hard applying for other jobs while I wait. I do not want to have all my eggs in one basket, that's for sure.
  11. I took the plunge today and sent an email to Eileen O'Malley asking if she knew the timeline for Caucasus applicants. I hope that was okay. *gulp*
  12. Ha. That is fine. I may be applying to Georgia, but I feel that I can still say something about Russia. Mainly, you just have to be mindful of what you research and say. There is not reason to be paranoid. When I went to Russia, I did not bring up Russian politics myself - although there were plenty of Russian students who would bring up the topic. They would also ask me about American politics, especially since at the time I was there it was during our Primaries. There is not the same level of paranoia that was present during the Stalinist era, that's for sure, or even what was present during the Soviet times in general. I cannot speak for China as I don't quite know the situation, but the advice I have is just be mindful. Someone else on here had a good point is that you should wait and see with whom you are dealing first before you engage in any political or other sensitive discussions.
  13. Haha. So did I, actually. Spam in my mailbox, too.
  14. With a country like the one to which I am applying, there is no telling when it will send out notifications. I could also be here in May. Have you been to Estonia? The closest I have ever been to Estonia was within one mile of its border in Russia. My cell phone thought I was in Estonia. (I apologize if this has already been discussed, that was a many pages ago).
  15. No worries! I absolutely love Russia. If I don't get the Fulbright, I am considering going back to Russia to teach.
  16. I have actually applied for Georgia. I considered applying for Russia, though. Yeah, I hope we both hear before too long.
  17. I am still waiting. Based on past notifications, I could hear anywhere between March 28th and April 26th...
  18. My email is tormenting me this morning. I click refresh and it shows I have a new message! My heart skips a beat only to learn that Fastweb has told me they have matched me to more scholarships. I am not sure what I will do when the actual email comes...
  19. That is too funny!
  20. Thank you for this!
  21. Congratulations to all those who received good news today! As for those who didn't, hang in there, you all made a valiant effort and it is impressive to have come this far. I am still in the waiting game. I am hoping now that Germany has heard, the gates will be open, and notifications will come flooding out. I am still curious if anyone has received notification from countries that don't have their own Fulbright committee? Also, a question for Germany grantees, what did the subject of the email look like and where did it come from?
  22. Woot! Woot! Eurasia. I noticed the drop, too...I wonder why? *shrugs* I don't think they notify us all at once.
  23. So have only applicants applying to countries that have their own Fulbright Commissions been notified at this point?
  24. Yeah, that was a little irritating. I like the general feeling of camaraderie on this board.
  25. Oh, I am sorry to hear that. There is still hope! You still have a chance.
