  1. I am not quite sure if this is the right forum for this, but it is about waiting, so here it goes. Between mid-April and the end of April, I applied for several assistantships and at this point have heard back from none of them. The assistantships spread out across different departments, none of which are my own. Is there a certain protocol for hearing back? Or does it very from school to school and program to program? Does not hearing back mean that I was not selected? When would be a reasonable time, if at all, to email these programs to inquire about my status? Going to graduate school hinges upon these assistantships and if I don't get one, I will likely have to defer. The sooner I know the better so I can start planning for next year. It has been total silence from all these assistantship positions and I am worried. Any insight would be appreciated.
  2. Hey everyone! I accepted the offer of admission for IU for this coming fall. I still am not 100% I will be attending this upcoming year, though, as I am trying to secure funding. It's nice to meet you all. I do hope that I will be able to find an apartment, though…. My program is Russian and East European Studies.
  3. Chocolate and tea. Any kind, any time.
  4. I am applying for several different graduate assistantship positions. For one of the positions, to work on grant-writing, I sent out my CV and a cover letter. I realize, looking back over my CV as I prepare for another assistantship, that I spell "REPLATED COURSEWORK" instead of "RELATED COURSEWORK". It's a small mistake (I think), but will it screw me over? Should I send an amended version of the vita? It was due on April 30th. While I am here, I have another question about the CV. Should I list related coursework, especially since I am not also sending in a transcript? How should it be formatted? Right now I have it organized in a list with corresponding course numbers. In a previous version of my CV, it is in paragraph form with no corresponding course numbers. Thank you in advance.
  5. So strange, last year all of Eastern Europe and Eurasia went out on the same day. Russia went out a week earlier, but that was because Russia is the only one in this regional group to have its own Fulbright Commission. At least, if I remember correctly... Good luck, everyone! I have been lurking around this forum, checking now and then. I have some friends who applied for this upcoming year and am anxious to hear news.
  6. I just want to start by saying that, unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. But I do have a similar question. I have to accept or decline an offer of admission by April 15th and was wait listed for funding. In the wait list email, they said I likely won't know until after April 15th. Funding is really the deciding factor as I would not be able to go without it and am not willing to take on more loans. This is for a Master's program. What is the protocol on that?
  7. Thank you for the advice! A professor (not the same one I am asking about) from the program did make contact with me after I received admittance into the program saying how they thought my research interests and background would be a great fit for their program. But no, I have not been a "supervisor" of which I am aware. I know that often when applying to a PhD program, you make contact with potential supervisors and that if admitted, often work closely with one or several professors. I thought Master's programs were a little bit more loosely defined in terms with whom you work?
  8. My "pet" interest is religious fundamentalism in America. I love reading books on the subject, articles, and analyzing religious material, websites, and organizations.
  9. I have been accepted, but if I don't get funding, it will make it that much more difficult to go as I really would rather not go into any more debt than I already have…if I don't get in, I have some options that I will try and pursue.
  10. I have not been able to find a clear answer to this, but do any of you have any idea if FLAS Fellowships will be available for the 2014-2015 academic year? I know Title IV has faced some cuts, especially for the Russian and Eurasian Studies field - although now government officials may be thinking twice with what has been going on in Ukraine. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/07/world/europe/american-experts-on-russia.html?_r=2 (recent article on the deficit of American experts on Russia). http://aseees.org/newsnet/2013-03.pdf (specific information on Title IV)
  11. I would probably err on the side of caution and switch it up a bit, maybe going into more detail or bringing more focus to what you are interested in and how you think this fellowship can help you. It is hard to say for sure if the same people who admitted you will also be reading and deciding upon fellowships, but just to be sure, I would make it is a little different.
  12. Okay, so I have been admitted to a Master's program and there is a professor with similar research interests as me, although they do not line up exactly. I have not accepted this offer of admission since I am still waiting to hear back on funding, but I wanted to make contact with this professor to introduce myself and my research interest. Do you think it is appropriate that I should do this at this stage, or not? If so, how do you think I could go about phrasing it? I have been thinking this over for a week to no avail and kindly ask for advice. Also, I wasn't exactly sure where to post this question, so I apologize if this doesn't quite fit this section.
  13. Yesterday, I got an email with the name of a fellowship I am applying for in the subject line. I could see a snippet of the actual email and it started with "Congratulations!" I started shaking and hastily opened the email only to find that the fellowship committee was congratulating me on the admittance to the school and that I will hear back about fellowship decisions within the next couple of weeks. Urgh, the adrenaline surges from things like that!
  14. This happened to me at the beginning of the month. At the end of the message, instead of signing off in a normal way, they said "I wish you a successful outcome with your application" which is really odd phrasing. In fact, the email was sent TWICE because the first one did not have this little message at the end...
  15. Or this one: My rejection letter is addressed to someone else. Classy UCLA, classy…
  16. 27 Feb 2014 report spam LOL that Harvard considers applicants' marital & parental status to determine relative commitment to the program. Sounds like another method one of the world's leading proponents of neo-liberalism uses to ensure its cohorts remain decidedly bourgeois.
  17. I have this same "issue" but most programs should be pretty understanding of this. Anyway, what's the harm in asking in a polite, reasonable way? The worst that can happen is for them to say they would be unable to offer funding. Currently, I am waiting to hear back on funding from one school and I am on pins and needles...
  18. UM will always mean the University of Montana to me.
  19. Late 1920s through early 1950s Soviet Union - basically the Stalinist Era.
  20. That was something I was particularly worried about and why I did not apply to more schools, even though that is an aspect of a professor's job. I ended up applying to only four and even that small number cost me more than a pretty penny. I wish I had applied to a couple more programs, though.
  21. I landed on the wait list earlier this week. I do have one admittance, so like others have said, there is not as much pressure. I wish they were able to tell you where you fall on the wait list, if not specifically, then generally, so as to have some idea on what to expect. I know some programs do this, but not everyone does. I received this: " I want to emphasize that the admissions committee was in agreement that you possess all the desired qualifications for graduate work. Should a spot in our 2014/15 class open up, I will be pleased to welcome you to our program." Does that mean I am somewhere near the top of the pile? The letter was pretty generic and I want to say that it is impossible to know/they send this to all the applicants they put on the wait list. Any ideas? Good luck, everyone!
  22. Boren is also cool. I am also hoping to visit Armenia before my grant ends in June. I understand where you are coming from in terms of bring to find out to which schools you should apply. As I have mentioned before, I have particular interest in the Caucasus and there are just not many programs that offer emphasis in that region. Aside from choosing schools that had at least some background and course offerings on the region, I also tried to apply to programs that would give me relative freedom to research once it comes time to write a thesis and the like. In undergrad, I took classes that touched upon Soviet legacy in Central Asia and thought it was pretty interesting.
  23. So, every single day, my counterparts scream their heads off at children for not understanding grammatical concepts…like that'll inspire confidence. Of course, the children are so used to it that they don't bat an eye. I'll tell you, if anyone ever screamed at me like that when I was a kid I probably would have burst into tears. My host family keeps a dog chained to a fence during the day and let it loose at night. It ends up running around the yard maniacally, barking all damn night long. I can't remember when the last time I had a restful, anxiety-free night. And, like many people on this forum, I just want to flipping know already. I did get into one school so far and I am thrilled, but I feel like I can't truly celebrate until I know if funding will come through…until then, I keep saying to people, "Yeah, I was accepted, but…" I really don't know how I made it through the wait last year to hear back from Fulbright…I'm already going crazy.
  24. Hello Echo-syn! I am also applying to Russian and Eurasian Studies programs. The only overlap I have with you in terms of schools is Georgetown and I have not heard back from them yet. From previous years, I was able to ascertain that Georgetown usually notifies anywhere between late February and early March. But who knows?
  25. I don't know enough about your field to give an informed answer nor did you offer enough information here, in my opinion, that is especially useful for the question you are asking. Here are questions you might want to consider to help you make a decision: which program is the better fit? Which professors have interests closely related to yours? How have your interactions been with these two universities? How important is location to you? What kind of career are you considering? Cost of living? Visiting, I think, will definitely help you to make a decision about which school is the best fit for you.
