  1. Thank you for this!
  2. Yes, I do. It would be cool to learn some of those languages. Currently I am studying Russian and teaching myself Georgian on the side.
  3. Congratulations!
  4. YES! I had this experience while studying abroad in Russia. Meeting my host family for the first time...I don't think I could have been more nervous. But they turned out to be awesome. As for walking in the street and people would come up and ask me something, I had the same thought: "Oh man, they are speaking Russian to me! What do I do? What do I do?" At which point, I missed the question and ask them to repeat it. Then, they repeat the question either in English or yell the question at me in Russian. I agree, three months is not long enough - I was just getting my groove on with the language and then I had to leave. Fulbright, this is where you come in...
  5. It makes perfect sense. Ha. Actually, when first round notifications rolled out, I skipped the first line of the email entirely in search for the part where I would be rejected and then suddenly I saw "your application has been forwarded..." at which point I realized it was actually good news and jumped for joy.
  6. I agree with you on that - I need time to prepare myself with this email. From what I have gathered from last year's forum, there was no mention of (P) (ALT) or (NS) in early notification emails - Western Europe and Eurasia being the first out of the gate. It does not mean there wasn't - but I would think someone would have mentioned it. I also heard that (P) (ALT) or (NS) may have applied to East Asia/Pacific countries. I do not remember or know what the deal with the Western Hemisphere was. So, in essence, it is hard to note what will happen. Perhaps people waiting to hear from Western European countries (or any really) should note what the subject line is when they receive the email.
  7. I think it means "Principal".
  8. I do remember from last year's forum that the email subjects read either (P), (ALT), and (NS). Knowing this, are we going to even have time to brace ourselves...
  9. Congratulations to Bluewho and Kltree! I find it somewhat odd that people I don't even know know I have been recommended.
  10. Dr. Herp, are you sure that is a good idea? I know in years past when everyone was allowed to edit, there were a lot of headaches because people kept changing things around. I don't know, just my thoughts.
  11. Does anybody know where applications are sent for those who are participating in smaller programs? I applied for an ETA position in Georgia and I do not think there is a specific Fulbright commission there. Would anybody happen to know where the application is sent instead?
  12. I have a question that I hope somebody here can answer. When I was writing my Fulbright essays, I mentioned that I would be taking a class in teaching English as a foreign language based on information given on my university's website. Well, it turns out, that the university isn't offering that course in the spring! It is offering a similar course (I think!) called History and Structure of the English Language for Teachers that I could take - however, my schedule is already pretty full. I wonder if I sent in my official transcript to Fulbright and it showed that for my courses in progress that I wasn't taking a related course if it would be detrimental? I emphasized my creative writing skills in my essay and how I wanted to bring creative thought to the classroom and am taking a writing course and creative writing course next semester. Not to mention, I took linguistics and creative writing this past semester. I am just concerned about what I specifically said in my essays do not match up with what I have specifically on my transcripts. Does anybody have any insight? I applied for an ETA, by the way. I have other teaching experiences outside of learning it in the classroom via various community service positions that I have also highlighted in my essays.
  13. I am sorry to hear that! I was rooting for you! Best of luck in your other endeavors!
  14. I am sorry to hear that! I have a friend who applied to Kazakhstan this year as an ETA. However, I don't know if he has made it past the first round. I would say learning Russian and Kazakh would be a plus, for sure. I don't know if that will be the aspect of an application that will make or break you for getting the ETA, it all depends on what kind of experience and credentials you and your competitors/applicants have in any given year. With regards to doing independent research and or volunteering - do what your heart feels it should do. If you can show that you have a passion for the region and can perhaps explain that this opportunity in Kazakhstan specifically can help you in a future career, it will go a long way. I don't know if this answers your question very well. Best of luck!
  15. It seems, judging from past years, that notifications are made from country to country, spread out over months. There are differences even between when full grants and ETAs are notified even if both are for the same country. I believe the emails will be sent out in batches, though, country to country, but not en masse like it was for every country for the initial first round notification. It'll be a long wait.
  16. Holy moly! That would be so nerve-wracking! Well, I wish you the best of luck.
  17. Recommended for an ETA in Georgia!!! :-)
  18. It doesn't help that I have nothing to do today. School doesn't start back up for another week.
  19. I just saw via Twitter that someone was recommended...
  20. And I heard that this year from my FPA that a record number of people applied...
  21. Anyone out there applying to one of the countries in the Caucasus? Full or ETA?
  22. I am finishing up my undergrad degree this spring. Hopefully, I will be teaching English abroad for a year or two before I either go to grad school or enter a career. That's the plan, anyway. We'll see tomorrow (or maybe even today) if that plan will bear any fruit. I am crossing my fingers, hoping for the best, and planning for the worst.
  23. Wow! There are a lot of users reading this forum...
  24. Haha. Me, too.
  25. Of course! Thank you!
