Thanks, @qeta!  After reading what you posted about the benefits of being an overnight guest, I started to think that maybe I should do it. I really hope you find the program that not only fits you better but also supports you more than your previous MA. 

The best advice I had - which ties in with yours - is that you need to be able to show an admissions committee that you can devise a PhD project, based on your interests and a potential research question. My interests are about the links between technology, fertility, contraception and embodiment, for example, and I gave examples of how I would like to study this, with particular reference to research already undertaken at X school or faculty members that were researching similar things already. Having an interest in “health” or “Gender” very broadly wouldn’t be specific enough, based on the feedback that I had from a number of professors.  

Can the person who was rejected by Berkeley share where they found that info? When I logged in to the site, nothing came up and my application still says "submitted".

Hey folks, it's really sweet that people are reminding everyone that we are worth more than our admissions ... it would probably be sweeter if it wasn't coming from people with those coveted admission spots already, who have the luxury of not being in that position

I think that location needs to be an important consideration too! You’ll be living in a city for six or seven years. It makes such a different to your quality of life (and quality of work) if you can love where you live too.

Hi @European Lumpi, I think its important to support people’s choices even if we wouldn’t necessarily make them. The application process is a long process and people may change their minds for any reason. UWM is one of the highest ranked programs for sociology and this decision can have life long ramifications. I wouldn’t fault anyone for wanting to reapply for a higher ranked program if they thought it would be better for them in the long run (which is not to say that NCSU is a bad choice at all, just that UWM opens a lot of doors in the future!).

Hey! Welcome to the forum. I would maybe hold off on calling? From what I can tell none of the programs you’ve listed have released many acceptances - I’ve also applied to Brown and they’ve not sent anything out (according to the results page, at least). Might just be a case of waiting and seeing for a couple more weeks, which is frustrating for sure
