  1. This is a great idea. I'd love to connect to people in our cohort (regardless of school).
  2. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I hope you hear more good news from Emory very soon!!!
  3. Tamiflu!!!! Go to your doctor asap....if you start Tamiflu right away, it might keep you from getting full blown flu. I know this, because the exact same thing happened to me this past weekend. My husband came down with a bad case of the flu last Monday, and I was scheduled to attend recruitment weekend at my top choice program on Thursday. I was taking care of my husband and scared as hell that I would get sick. We both took Tamiflu and my husband got better after only a few days, and I managed to not get sick at all. I know what you're going through...it is so frustrating and stressful. I'm sending all of the positive vibes I can your way and hope everything works out!
  4. Ah, I hope you get the invite! I'm going to the recruitment this weekend and I'm so nervous (overwhelmingly excited...but also nervous). I'm just not sure what to expect and have gotten mixed information in searching online. From what I can tell, Emory offers acceptance to a larger pool than those who attend the recruitment weekend. They also accept a significant number of international students, so I'm wishing the best for you!
  5. Are you waiting for a recruitment weekend invite from Emory or for more information/itinerary for the weekend?
  6. I'm a social sciences major and got an extra Verbal section both times that I took the test. I don't think we can draw any reliable conclusions from a handful of anecdotal cases... ETS states that the experimental section is random, and we have no reason not to believe that is true.
  7. Rthusia, We're applying to the same programs! I'm also a non-traditional student and only a few years younger than you. I'm also a first generation student! I wish you all the best...hopefully we get into our programs! It would be pretty cool if we got into the same program...it would be nice to have a friend from the start.
  8. Reading this thread has brightened my day! I'm happy because it's Friday, it's raining, and I have a new book to read.
  9. Thank you! Congrats on your MA! It sounds like you are a certifiable pro in the application process...I know who I'll be reaching out to if I have questions, ha! I wish you the best of luck...if anything so that you won't have to take the GRE again. That test is the absolute worst. I had to use every ounce of willpower in my body to keep from beating my head against the keyboard by the last section. Luckily, all of the application portals have let me know that my materials are "completed" and "verified". I just worry that somewhere in there I misspelled "Sociology" or got my name wrong or something. Is that a reasonable worry? Probably not. Does it keep me up at night anyway? You bet your butt it does. I do feel relieved that what I'm feeling is normal though...it's good to not be alone. Here's hoping for the best!
  10. Hello! I've been creepily stalking the forums for a while, but I want to join the party. I just submitted my final application yesterday and am feeling none of the relief I thought I would feel... Anyone else completely paranoid that they have somehow screwed up somewhere in the application to the extent that it will be immediately rejected? Anyone? Perhaps I should have double-checked everything 80 more times before clicking "submit". I'm applying for joint MA/PhD programs in Sociology (health and life course focus). I want to study DEATH. (Really though.) I'm also feeling like I have NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. Anyone else? Imposter syndrome is real. I'm oldish (almost 33), I earned a bs in Sociology in 2011, and I've done nothing in the field since... I think that makes me a "non-traditional" student. I did start a business that (inexplicably) became very successful. Then I sold it to do this. I have little (VERY little) research experience. One publication up for review. No Masters degree. My GPA is okay (3.73). My GRE's aren't terrible or great (93rd, 51st, & 93rd percentiles...damn you Quant). And I have zero experience in the field. I do have three very good letters of recommendation, a strong writing sample, a (hopefully) strong SOP, a conference presentation, student paper award, and a whole heap of life experience. So there's that. This is, without a doubt, what I want to do with my life, but my lack of experience and research has me worried. So now I'll join you all in the waiting game and try not to obsess too much. At least it appears I'm in good company!
