  1. has anyone else not heard from Vanderbilt yet?! like where tf my rejection letter at that I paid $110 for lol
  2. the acceptance letters require us to commit to attending within 30 days of the date printed on the acceptance - i was feb 15th so i need to let them know by march 15th. i just emailed today to ask about merit scholarship offers but it's highly unlikely i'll be accepting my spot (most likely headed to Georgetown Law for a JD) so i will be throwing another acceptance back in the pool and hope it goes to one of ya'll who are anxiously waiting still!!
  3. thank you for this comment! the law degree is one that i think i would certainly use. a lot of nonprofits/think tanks/advocacy groups in the world of criminal justice reform have JD's on their staff, which is why I applied to the law schools when I started all of this. but like you were, i'm straight out of undergrad right now and trying to sort out which path will get me to where i want to ultimately be. i have considered taking the JD acceptance while it is there and seeing where that takes me - say 6 years down the line from now i will still be only 29 years old with a JD and hopefully 3 years of quality professional experience. i guess at that point if i find myself still itching for PhD i would be a much stronger applicant than i am now at least. my GRE is definitely one area that i can improve on, so i am glad to hear you noticed significant improvements after graduate study. i am just struggling to pick a path right now but thankful to at least have these choices despite the PhD not working out
  4. was wondering if anyone who has gone the MA route prior to the PhD can offer me some genuine advice? it's not looking like i will garner any PhD acceptances this cycle but i have been accepted to Columbia's MA Sociology program and U Penn's MS Criminology program. In addition, I was accepted at several T15 law schools including my top choice Georgetown Law and i'm also in at Columbia's MSW program. still waiting on PhD decisions from UNC, Emory, Princeton (social policy), Vanderbilt, and NYU but i'm assuming rejections from all of those. career/research wise, i'm really interested in crime and deviance study, specifically mass incarceration and sentencing. i am passionate about criminal justice and mass incarceration reform, and i have a special interest in specifically researching the children of incarcerated parents. i have always dreamed of being in a place like DC and pushing for intense advocacy, public policy change, and reform supported by research, and do not foresee myself pursuing a strict academic career. i am wondering if anyone has input on which of my options might be best suited for me at this point/thoughts on if doing a masters degree first is worth it in the long run? it seems like many people here have done a masters previously and are still not having any luck in the PhD game so it has made me nervous to invest in the masters degree. i am weary of the financial burden of an MA (and JD for that matter) but i am a Truman Scholar and have a $30,000 award for graduate study in my pocket which would certainly help. again any input would be greatly appreciated, as i have a lot to figure out!!
  5. checked portal to see rejection from Yale. thought this was my best shot because I currently have a job as a clinical researcher at Yale. assuming rejections from everywhere at this point so the whole PhD thing isn't going to happen for me...team 0 acceptances LOL
  6. for the people posting columbia rejections - where are you seeing this on your portals? i checked and don't see anything but i'm sure i'll be joining you in rejection soon
  7. I was advanced clinical social work practice and interested in the families, youth, and children field but also indicated an interest in working in mass incarceration on my application. submitted my materials around mid-November.
  8. Accepted today to 2 year MSW program (residential as opposed to online for those wondering). No financial aid info yet, letter mentions this information will come later
  9. I actually had neither which is why the director of the program encouraged me to complete the masters degree to build a quantitative background. all of my research has been qualitative and ethnography based + I am only 23 and 6 months out of undergrad so I think in general I lack overall experience as well. I did 2 theses while in college but they were both qualitative focused and I know I just don't have the same experience as a lot of other applicants that have already pursued masters degrees or been in the workforce for several years
  10. also checked portal and found a rejection from Northwestern...had applied to the JD/PhD program and it was my top choice. I can still be accepted to the JD program independently but not very hopeful for that. good news is that valentines candy is 50% off at CVS today, I got cookie dough halo tops from my "not boyfriend" for valentines day, and grey's anatomy is on tonight so I've set myself up for a real fantastic night of gaining 13 pounds
  11. noticed someone posted that we've been rejected from columbia if we did not hear anything today...just wondering how you know this? only noticed a couple acceptances posted so was holding out hope...was one of my dream schools
  12. Saw someone post an update on the results page that they received from professor at Emory...can we assume rejection if we did not hear of an acceptance at this point?
  13. thank you! likely will not be going because I have several JD acceptances and I don't see myself doing a masters with those in play...but good luck, hoping you get good results your way!!
  14. I know this isn't entirely relevant, but I know there's some other criminology/sociology people on here...I got an email today from a professor in Penn's criminology department - I had applied to the PhD but don't have an existing background in statistics so I am being offered admission to the masters program for now instead. Very nice email, said my app was strong and believed I would have many options but that they hoped I would consider doing the one-year masters program to get started with the department...so if anyone else applied heads up decisions are looming!!
