  1. Alas. Rejected. Mr. Wall said that remaining notifications are going out momentarily.

Unless one of the jobs I'm interviewing for comes back with an offer that's really exciting, it appears that I'm San Diego bound.

Good luck to the rest of you in making decisions and cleaning up your lingering applications. I'm sure I'll meet many of you in the coming years, even if we never realize we already know one another.

Sorry to hear that... but at least you have closure AND an awesome offer from UCSD!! Congratulations on a successful cycle!! :)

  2. My last open application is Harvard, and while I'm reasonably certain I'll be rejected (and I remain reasonably certain that we'll see more acceptances) there is a part of me that wants to bug the poor guy so I can be done.

yes - I understand not wanting to bug him.. at the same time, it is March 8th (i.e. high decision time), so it's not completely unreasonable to ask about your status.  If it was mid-Feb, then it would be a different story.  Plus it seems as though he's getting fewer inquiries now... his email must have been flooded earlier in the week (and I do feel bad about that), but things may have calmed down, so what's one more question?!  and best case - he may be able to give you GOOD news!!

  3. If I can figure out a place to store the picture online I'll post it tonight.

I had heard somewhere that the most competetive programs don't really waitlist because they can predict their yield extremely well. I have no idea if this is true.

For whatever it's worth, I still find it odder that no regular poster has claimed an admit from Harvard. It's (one of?) the largest elite program(s) and we've had claims for every other program of comparable competitiveness (incuding PEG, which takes what, four students?).

it does seem as though there should be more Harvard acceptances on the board.... Have you tried emailing or calling the dept?  Thom W sent me my rejection right away when I inquired.  I'm sure he'll let you know where you stand, since it seems as though their decisions have been made regardless of whether they've been officially sent out or not.

  4. If you haven't heard from UVa, odds are you are waitlisted. Apparently they notify people on the waitlist one by one depending how far down you are. I suggest emailing the DGS.

I received the same response from UVa, but I didn't feel as though it was a waitlist - more like a pending rejection. But maybe I'm just farther down the list!

  5. Congrats, did it come out of the blue or did you e-mail about your status?

Thanks! A little of both... I had emailed early this week and received a nice but fairly brief/generic response that decisions would be released soon. I'd say today's email was unrelated to the previous one, but not completely sure.

  6. For identification purposes, I can’t give you the long and complicated answer to that question. I will admit that I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to school, so when I don’t do well by my standards it is crushing.  It also doesn’t help that I overanalyze everything.

I do realize that rejection is common in academia and that I am not Gods gift to Political Science (I am not one of those prospective students that has an ego), but the waitlist is the “you are good, but not good enough” list. If I am admitted off of the waitlist, for the next 5-6 years I will always feel that I am not worthy enough to be in that program because you know that you were not their first choice.

However, if I do have to go through another cycle, I will follow all of the advice you have given on this thread so far. I only applied to 7 schools and looking at my choices at least half of them were terrible for me in terms of fit, which explains my results.

Aside from obvious things like trying to increase GRE scores (they were decent and within the averages of the schools that I applied to, but not stellar) and fixing minor problems in the SOP, the only thing I can think of is my writing sample.

I know being waitlisted is a good sign, but at the end of the day it is not an acceptance.

really we can't take these admissions decisions so personally, as hard as that may be.  as various posters have said, there could be multiple reasons why someone is waitlisted, accepted, or rejected for that matter... it's a complicated process and taking it personally only makes it harder and more frustrating....

Dude I went somewhere that waitlisted me undergrad. I got over it. you can too. All that matters is that you get in somewhere.

me too, and I never thought twice about it... during the admissions process we are no more than a few stats and a stack of papers (an important stack of papers, of course, but a stack regardless).  it's hard to get in the door, but what matters is how you perform once you're in.

  7. I've had some schools offer 5 years of summer stipends, some that don't explicitly break out a summer stipend but quoted their stipend in 12-month periods, and some that just offered 2 years of summer stipends or none at all. They ranged around $2000-5000 per summer, depending on the school.

Ok thanks for the info. Seems as though this is an area where offers vary quite a bit...
