  1. Am I the only one who finds the occasional "safety school" references on the results board to be kind of a bummer for everyone else?

Yes - there is no such thing as a "safety school" in PhD apps.... say a top ranked program has a 5% acceptance rate, and a lower ranked program has a 25% acceptance rate (and that's probably higher than any programs in reality)... well then you have between a 95% and 75% chance of being rejected at any given program.... no such thing as a "safety"!

Second rejection a la WUSTL delivered up in a steamy email with an attached letter of "not this year".  Sounds like if I haven't heard from Vandy for an interview yet, then that's a goner.  Doesn't take much for me to rule out a couple other schools.  Starting to get that sinking feeling.

well one acceptance is all you need, so don't give up yet!  at least that's what I'm telling myself...

  3. Haha, no no. Apologies, I'm not claiming that (thank goodness (for now)). That was incredulity...I mean, the only non-trolling thing I can think of is that someone called the department and was such a clear reject that they were told no (or that it was unlikely in the extreme).

haha OK that's what I thought!

  4. I'm starting to question the integrity of the results search.  In previous pages, several people mentioned issues; but honestly, I can understand if someone trashes a school they didn't get into, even if its not very professional, these are emotional times for us all.  But what really does worry me in when someone double posts a rejection with the same information (a U of Chicago rejection) and in that double post puts in a YouTube link saying something along the lines of "get a sweet job here after you move on from your silly dream".  Whoever posted this, please explain yourself, maybe I took you the wrong way... but otherwise I'm slapping those with spam reports pretty soon.

    agreed.

Yeah, I'm sure UVa went out of their way to call someone with a rejection when it looks as though in the past, applicants had to beg for official rejections in April!  There is definitely trolling going on on the Resuults Board.  Am I the only one suspicious?  When have there been a slew of "assumed rejections" posted to the board all at once and with really emphatic comments?  Plus, people who have actually called Duke and Chicago have received information that contradicts these "100% sure" assumptions... I don't think people should lose hope just yet, at least not based on the results board.

  5. The posts for U Chicago on the Results Board just seem strange... a la Duke posts from last week, maybe? I didn't apply to Chicago, so I wasn't paying close attention - did anyone credible claim an actual rejection? The spam, or at least speculative, posts on the board just taint the information for future applicants....

  6. same. i kinda want to call ucsd.

I didn't apply there, so take this for what it's worth, but I would guess that the people who haven't heard anything are either admitted or strongly in contention, and the dept is just figuring out the funding packages.  Since you haven't heard, I doubt there's any harm in calling or emailing to ask about your status, especially since you're likely in the "accepted" pile... just a thought!

  7. Any reasoning behind this guess?  This is pretty much my first pick, so of course I'm dying to know and haven't received word from any program yet.

I can only speak for the schools I've been tracking, but last year Wisconsin and Wash U StL, as well as Michigan, were out by now.

well my reasoning was based on last year's results (which were already out by now as you say), and from someone on here with some info who said Mich would be releasing this week....

  8. Yup - it was more of them asking a few pointed questions they needed answers to than an interview. The person I spoke with said that the admissions committee was "in the middle of making decisions" and that I should hear "really soon." so that was helpful, haha.

OK thanks... well i guess "really soon" is better than "a few weeks".... maybe...

  9.  I second this question. If so, Duke is my first reject. It was my safe school, which is a bit worrisome.

Look - there goes another "Decision Not Ready = Rejection" post for Duke on the Results Board.  I definitely think there's some trolling going on, regardless of whether or not Duke released some acceptances....

  10. POI reached out to me. Not sure if I am attending (for obvious reasons). Should I start a dialogue or wait awhile?

Again, not sure if I am attending.

in my opinion, I'd say start a dialogue without making any commitments.  You'll learn more about the program, which may help you make a decision.  Plus some good interactions with the POI may increase your chance of getting funding...
