Honestly, I don't really think it matters. If they have info they can give it to you. But for all our calling and all our guestimating, they will tell us when they get good and ready. So, you should call if it makes you feel better. Anyone disagree? -

God help me it's May not March! But it sounds like they are going to give me permission from the email I received. It's not an acceptance mind you, but free grad classes in my dream program are better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick! It's funny you say that about compliments. because I had an awesome class today and I discussed with my students how some people divert compliments, laugh them off or even in extreme cases apologize for their success. This process can be so battering to our self esteem. But we have to remember that we are accomplished people. And besides the accomplishments, can I say to you specifically and to my grad family in general that there was such a well of compassion overflowing for me when I was ruthlessly rejected by my program (on Valentine's day darn them to the pit of heck! Sorry...but Valentines day?) that it truly showed me that people are not as cruel and judgmental as is often talked about. I have found people on this thread to not only be compassionate, but thoughtful, helpful and responsible with advice. I wouldn't want to do this journey with another group of people. I hope at least a few of us stay in touch - and maybe those of us that do, when are all in our programs and there is no fear of reprisal, we can actually reveal ourselves. I don't know if you know this but I am not actually a beaver - as my profile picture suggests! -

But you haven't gotten a rejection yet, right? You have to keep your spirits up. Believe in yourself. You have no idea how much I believe in you! If not this program, then you will get into the program that is right for you. Stay strong. Virtual hug...and let me tell you something, my hugs are awesome! -

Does response mean acceptance? You also said you thought it was a good sign. I'm unclear. I mean I don't just do happy dances all willy Nilly. Were you accepted? Waitlisted? Asked out for brunch? Specificity if you please! -

I think it's a good sign. I would connect with her. Connections are so important when it comes to this process. I don't see how it can hurt. I say go for it! -

Oh my goodness! It is so funny that you say terse. There was a terser part of the email that I omitted because I was a l little embarrassed by it. I should have known I couldn't get anything past you. This is the part that I omitted: Dear Eager, I do not need your CV or any other material. When you contact me in May I will send you instructions on taking a class as a non-matriculated student. As for the rest of your email, if you want to be more competitive when you apply for our Ph.D. Program in the future, I would recommend that you be in touch, after May 15, with Professor XXXXX, Chair of our Admissions Committee, for feedback on your application. Please do not contact her until after May 15. Her email is XXXXXXX. The underlined, highlighted part is what I omitted originally. So yes, terse. But I'll take a terse response that give me some much needed information, over a sweet response that says absolutely nothing any day! -

Okay Grad fam, it has been a long time since I actually had a good sign and I need your feedback. As you know, rejected by dream program but in May I can enroll for the Fall 2013 Semester, take classes for free as a non-matric student, as I work on my 2nd go round. I was told I had to wait until May to get permission from the department . That bummed me out because who knew if I would get permission in May? So I knew I shouldn't, but I emailed a certain person in the department saying that I just wanted to introduce myself and asked if they needed my CV or any other material. This is what I got back: Dear *Eager, I do not need your CV or any other material. When you contact me in May I will send you instructions on taking a class as a non-matriculated student...if you want to be more competitive when you apply for our Ph.D. Program in the future, I would recommend that you be in touch, after May 15, with Professor XXXX, Chair of our Admissions Committee, for feedback on your application. Please do not contact her until after May 15. Her email is XXXXXXXX. I think this is a great sign. This sounds like she is going to give me permission! Also, what an opportunity, to speak to the chair of the admin committee to get feedback!!!! I was so scared that she was going to tell me to refrain from emailing her until May - this is so much more than I expected. What do you all think? *Not my real name but everyone here insists on anonymity. -

First of all Welcome! Secondly, I think you are our first musicologist...Excuse me! Now, not hearing anything is not officially a good sign....we're honest on this forum, but not brutally so, so feel safe. However, it is not a bad sign. There is still hope....and can I tell you from someone who has been rejected, hope is a beautiful and precious thing. Hold on to it and keep us posted. -

I know you are upset that it was a rejection, but considered for their Master's program is an awesome offer...is it not? You could work on getting grants and then have an in to the Ph.D track, no? Maybe it's me but this sounds good! Are you interested???? -

Grad fam, here is the latest on my journey: I called the department of my dream program today and received some information. I have to wait until May but then I can obtain permission from the English Department to take classes (this is because I teach a certain amount of credits). If I get that permission, the classes would be free - and I will be taking the general approach. I didn't know there was such a thing. So that's exciting. Even though I have to wait until May, I'm going to email the APO of the program and introduce myself so that she will recognize my name in May. If this works, I hopefully will be in the same classes I would have been in if I had been accepted. In the meantime, I will work on making myself a better candidate for the next go round. I hope this works because my mentor said something to me that meant a lot. She said, "If they met you, they would want you." Let's hope this works and let's hope that's true! -

First, Welcome! Secondly, I know it's hard to take this advice (I'm trying to to take it myself) STOP OVER THINKING THINGS! I know, I know, easier said than done. But let me share this with you all. I am part of a support group and there are affirmations that are written out and laid out on the table that we can see during our meetings. There was one that I saw that blew my mind and changed my life. I remind myself of it often. It is this: Suffering Is Optional. Wow! We only suffer because we choose to suffer. So, just for today, choose not to suffer. Much love! -

That is so funny!!! Coconuts. This process does make you feel nutty doesn't it? I actually said to my mother, "If I had known that this process was going to be so torturous-" She cut me off and said, "You would have done it anyway!" She's right! And I think that's true for most of us! Knowing all that we do now, we would all probably do it all over again! -

You know that I share your pain. It does hurt and can I say, it hurts more than a little. But I am so glad that you received good news - 15 minutes after? Wowzer! Happy dance anyone? Happy for you. So happy.... -
