  1. So this might seem like a stupid question, but for anyone who has lived in Columbia Housing, do you get assigned to a specific bedroom when you are in an apartment share, or just to the apartment itself? I haven't been able to get a hold of my future roommate and was just curious about which room I am going to be in.
  2. That sounds like a great opportunity. One of my friends in my BSW program was placed in a HIV counseling and case management center and really enjoyed the experience.
  3. Any current Columbia students know anything about the Arbor apartments? I just got my housing assignment and was placed there. They seem nice, but kind of far from campus.
  4. I just got approved by my school for housing, I haven't gotten my assignment yet. If you don't mind my asking, how much was the initial deposit for your apartment? I am trying to determine how much it will be once I get assigned. If you don't feel comfortable posting it here you can PM me.
  5. Spending some time at one of the many lakes is my favorite thing to do in the summer. Ann Arbor is not far from Detroit, I suggest going to Eastern Market or a Detroit Tigers game. If you want to take a road trip, northern Michigan is a few hours away and is gorgeous. There are lots of concerts and festivals that go on during the summer as well. Check out the Metro Times, it's a weekly paper that will have lots of suggestions and event schedules.
  6. I currently live in Indianapolis and attend IUPUI. There are lots of affordable housing options here, and you should have no problem finding a place with your budget. However, the public transportation is not great. The Broadripple neighborhood is nice, there are lots of shops, restaurants and bars and it is primarily young people who live in the area. Generally people rent or share houses instead of apartments there. It is about 15 minutes from campus if you drive. I live on the NE side of the city, right next to Fort Ben State Park. I live in a brand new huge one bedroom apartment with W/D and a pool and I pay $780 a month. My rent is on the higher side for the area, so you would be able to find something cheaper than that. IUPUI has plenty of parking for students, you can buy a pass for a year for around $270. Feel free to send me a PM if you have more specific questions..
  7. From reading the Heather Jarvis student loan website, the new caps would apply to new borrowers only. Her site is very informative. This is her blog where she discussed the proposed reforms http://askheatherjarvis.com/blog/will-proposed-cuts-to-public-service-loan-forgiveness-impact-existing-borro
  8. I am waiting to hear back about financial aid, however I am leaning towards Columbia. The opportunities for field work are impressive there, and the networking opportunities will be helpful in trying to land a job after graduation. All of the schools you are considering are excellent, so it's a matter of where you feel comfortable.
  9. Just got an email to check my status and I was accepted!!
  10. I applied in December as well. I'm hoping we hear back soon!
  11. Did you apply by Dec 1st? I know people who have had that happen in past years, who have been told that their applications have been "held". It means they are waiting to make a decision on your application until after the application deadline of March 1st, so they can see how you stack up against the rest of the apps who didn't make the early deadline. I know people who have been accepted after this happens, so I don't think its necessarily a bad thing.
  12. I have an undergrad degree from MSU, and took a few social work classes there. I can't really speak to the specific department, but overall I loved my time at MSU. The social work school there is respected and from the interactions I had with the professors they were passionate and committed.
  13. I'm waiting too, it seems that they sent out a bunch of decisions last week, but nothing since then.
