  1. I'm sorry to hear about that. You seem so keen and passionate about social work. This must be so frustrating.... I don't know if this will be of any consolation to you... When I called the department several months ago I was told the competition at U of C is fierce and they receive lots of high level candidates. So you are up against a lot of top notch compitition at this school. There just aren't enough spots to go around to everyone who deserves one. This is most likely why you haven't received a rejection yet. They're waiting to see if any extra spots open up . If you end up getting a BSW, you will find that there are tons of schools in Canada that offer advanced standing MSW programs - far more than 2 yr programs and you could apply to a dozen of them if you want. With all that choice you will be very likely to get into a 1 yr MSW program later on. Best of luck!
  2. I was not accepted but someone on the forum said it's 4 weeks from the date the acceptance letter was drafted.
  3. U of T accepted 140 and Laurier accepted 90. Apparently Windsor got 230 applicants this year for 30 spots. This is for the 2 yr programs. i don't know much about the advanced standing programs.
  4. It's not over yet. I know it sucks to wait but good news may be in store for you. I wouldn't get down too quickly. Both U of T and Laurier combined accepted 230 students. This is the same amount of students that applied to Windsor. I bet some of these students were accepted to Windsor and will be turning down their spots fairly quickly. People from Toronto have a tendency to want to stay in Toronto (or close by) and many will not want to move to Windsor since it's so far away and it's not a big city. There will be a few more rounds of offers. I am certain of it.
  5. It sounds like a good temporary solution to this situation. You don't want to rush to make a decision until you are ready. Even though we gave you lots of rational reasons for choosing one school over another, the place where you will be happiest will not be decided on logic or common sense. Congrats on receiving two wonderful offers and good luck!
  6. Congratulations on your offer! Are you going to accept it? Mine hasn't been changed. I guess I didn't make the first round of offers. Thanks for giving us the update!
  7. If rejections were emailed on Friday, my guess is that acceptance letters were mailed out on Friday or Monday (which is in line with the approximate time frame the secretary told me over the phone). I am hoping that by tomorrow some people will get letters in the mail.
  8. I just wanted to throw out a question to anyone planning to attend an MSW program... Ever since you were accepted and told people about it, do you find that people are starting to talk to you more about their personal problems? Just wondering... This have been my experience the past 2-3 weeks and I wonder if this is something that will happen for the rest of my career (outside of work hrs).
  9. OOOPS! I meant to direct the post above to semimicro (and not MSW13).
  10. U of T has a better reputation internationally and is one of only 3 universities in Canada that actually makes the list of best universities in the world (the others are McGill and UBC). But in Canada, York is a known school with a good reputation. Unless you plan to move to the US or elsewhere (in which case, I would choose U of T) or get your PhD and teach, world recognition does not need to be at the top of your list of deciding factors. If you can do the same kind of work at both places, I know that I would go with York because of the generous funding package. Your salary will not be any higher if you go to U of T instead of York, and you will end up with more debt. U of T has scholarships, but are they as generous? When a potential employer learns about your awards and scholarships it will look impressive since such large scholarship amounts are rare in social work (in Canada anyway). Some things to consider.... After you graduate, do you want to buy yourself a new car? A house or condo? Are you hoping to have a family within the next 5 years? Debt will likely delay these things. Then again, if you are in situation that allows you to live with family for 2 years for free or you are financially independent and do not not need to take out a loan, then U of T is worth considering if prestige is important to you.
  11. I think what the poster meant is if you look at the rankings over the past few years, McGill's position has been slipping. However it's still a great school and that should not stop you if you decide that McGill is the best option for you to pursue.
  12. My family is something else. I only told them about grad school after I got in so I wouldn't have to hear them discouraging me from applying for an entire year. After telling them that I had applied and was accepted, and even managed to save up half of the money I needed to go back to school (as scholarships are rare in my program).... Instead of congrats.... Why don't you work some more, save up all of the money you need and apply again? Yeah, right.... Last year the cut-off was a B+ and 2 years of work experience. This year is was A- and 3-5 yrs of experience. Maybe by the time I save up it'll be an A plus 10 yrs of experience. Sheesh!!!!
  13. One friend of mine kept on saying for months, Don't worry, you got all A's so you'll get in. (That was frustrating since there are other factors besides grades. And my A- average is not the same as an A!!! Somehow, she didn't understand that). After I made it quite clear how difficult it is to get in and told her the odds of getting accepted, it took a rejection letter from a really good school for her to clue in that it's really competitive. Then she finally asked, But why is it so difficult to get in? My brother in !@#$#%# got into his Masters program, no problem. Again, I PATIENTLY explained that there is next to no work in your brother's field (which is why he had to go back to school after the Master's) and everyone knows there's lots of work in this field so lots of people are applying. But why is the cut off so high?? Why did they only take people with an A- or higher?? I give up.....
  14. Well you just might get that offer you're been waiting for sometime this week. You didn't get a rejection email last week, so this is a very good sign in my opinion.
  15. I know what you mean. One of the first things I've been doing when I wake up in the morning is checking my mailbox. Even though I will most likely go to Laurier, I'd still like to know what my options are. Do you have a preference for either school?
  16. I didn't ask, but at most schools people are given an interview over the phone if they live out of town and if they make the cut (for instance, made it to a supervisor's top 10) they have to go to an in-person interview before the supervisor chooses the top candidate for their lab. I don't know much about the process of getting into U of T, but I know a bunch of people admitted to clinical psych at other Canadian schools and everyone had an interview. You could get away with not getting an interview if you are applying to an M.A. in Counselling from the department of Education, for instance. But clinical psych is one of the toughest psych programs to get into (if not the toughest) and they are highly selective about their candidates. Best of luck on your applications!
  17. A friend of a friend was just accepted last week. Clinical psych programs are highly competitive. Typically 250 people apply for less than 10 spots. Best of luck!
  18. For my first acceptance (it was my second choice and is most likely where I'll end up going), I was on gradcafe. Other posters had already receive emails within the past half hour so I knew it was coming. I checked my email and there was nothing. About 20 minutes later, I got my email. Luckily, I use gmail so the first line of the message is visible even if you don't open up the email. I was so petrified I don't think I would have been able to open it up right away. When I saw the word congratulations on the first line, I was shocked and started to tremble and I was finally able to open up the email because I knew good news was inside. While I was shocked and unbelievably excited, I was also a bit sad that no one was home so I could share the news in person. I had to email my boyfriend at work, then called my bf, followed by my sister, and told them over the phone. It took 20 minutes for my boyfriend to get the news and he immediately called me at home to congratulate me.
  19. I called the school on Wednesday and was told that the first round of admissions decisions had recently been decided and the offers were currently being processed by the admissions department. They will be mailed out early next week at the latest (but also could have been mailed out this past Thursday or Friday). She only told me about first round offers and did not mention how people who were rejected or waitlisted would be notified. (But based on this website, it seems that some rejections have come through email). She said some people might need to wait a while for an offer as there will be subsequent rounds of offers made depending on how many people accept and decline. I think they will go through their rounds of offers fairly quickly since most people have already heard back from their schools and will be able to make a quicker decision.
  20. If you aren't fluent in French your internship options may be greatly limited. I would look into this before deciding.
  21. I'm sorry to hear the news, AccioMSW. You gave it your best shot. I hope this year will bring you something even better - like a great new job.
  22. Awww.... Thanks for the compliment, Beth23. This forum has been great for me, too. Since we're all in the same boat, we can all relate to how stressful the process can be. I can't wait until it's all over. Only one more week to go before I find out where I'll be going. My boyfriend will be happy too, since I am always talking about something related to grad school lately. lol
  23. Best of luck, Beth23. It won't be much longer now. The letters should arrive by the end of next week at the latest.
