Goobah reacted to DSWstudentTSSW in DSW 2021
I received an acceptance call from Tulane! (SPRING 2022)
I'm a HUGE fan of their program! It is a great balance of leadership, policy, and practice with an emphasis on applied research. Their school of social work has institutes, and active research, related to trauma and resilience and Tulane is a top 50 nationally ranked Tier 1 University. I’m beyond excited!

We have touched on this in this thread. Interesting article:
Evolving Education: Defining the Terminal Degree
By Sue Coyle, MSW
Social Work Today
“…as the degree increases in popularity and awareness, questions and concerns have begun to circulate about what the increasing presence of DSWs could mean for the field. The term terminal degree is one that has become fraught with emotion, as professionals and leaders question what the consequences of labeling the DSW as such will be.”

I’d be curious to hear what the conversation is around current DSWs.
I hope MSW and DSW degrees, for those who want them, become more affordable and that pay and benefits (including loan assumption/forgiveness) are able to support the growing demand for professional doctorates in our field.

Interesting reading this thread. I was accepted to the University Of Kentucky DSW. It seems over 100 were accepted so I’m not sure how competitive it was.

Yes! Done and submitted. My graduate institution took 3 days to send “auto/instant” official e-transcripts. It’s the worst week to request them! ?
I saw a great quote yesterday - always a good reminder - ❤️??
“You weren’t rejected you were redirected.”
?I’ll keep you posted on Tulane ?

Hi everyone, finally found out yesterday I was waitlisted at Penn. They said they are letting people know about any final decisions within the next 2 weeks, but my guess is not too many, if any, would decline their acceptance. Took them long enough to let me know! As much as I would have liked to have been accepted, I’m taking this as a win and hope to reapply next year. It seems like there are some other great schools out there to explore and I hope more and more schools decide to start a DSW program!

Hi! Thanks so much for the feedback and insight! I think my concern, initially, with an EdD over the DSW was that it’s not social work..... that being said, I have my LCSW which is the current and foreseeable terminal license.... and I work in education. My current employer has quite a few EdDs (and even a few psychologists...). I wonder if it’s more common in private universities vs. public. Totally Anecdotal- the public universities I have looked at often require “PhD in social work or closely related field” - but when I look at current faculty, I don’t see EdDs (or even DSWs!) ?

1) I think EdD’s are an amazing solid degree. Education has done a good job of making sure to present the EdD as equal to the PhD, just with a different focus. (Just like psychology and the PsyD) I think all education in general has started to realize that one model (PhD) isn’t going to be enough going forward and practical application, or translational models of education are desperately needed.
2) I think if your goal going forward is to continue teaching, the EdD is a reasonable choice! I think the biggest consideration would be how your university (if you are planning on staying there?) views the degree. But from what you said it sounds like it’s favorable.

I could see Michigan doing a small in-person cohort. They seem to be dabbling in online but not to the extent that their business school - Ross - has. I’ll keep an eye on them.

That is so frustrating! You are so close to a DSW program and can’t even apply ? I think looking for at EdD is a great idea. There are definitely crossover topics and since you work will have an education component, I think it’s worth looking to. Also, I’m STILL waiting to hear Penn. Jeff keeps telling me they are still making decisions. Ugh.

So one thing I have struggled with.... should I consider an EdD? ?
My area of interest is increasing SUD education among treatment providers. 1) There is a need and 2) research shows that providers’ attitudes toward people with SUDs contribute to barriers in tx b/c of stigma/bias.... One of the core methods to help combat this is through education (implicit and explicit).
Has anyone else here looked at EdDs? There are a few that seem geared toward this.
edited for clarity - on my phone

I was going to ask for feedback and was told that many programs aren’t able/willing to do that...? Has anyone had success getting constructive feedback? ?

I know in years past they have? I know several ppl who applied to Penn previously who got feedback, but maybe that was before they started receiving a ton of applications. Greater than 5 years ago, maybe? I thought Alabama invited individuals to ask if they had questions in the actual rejection letter — along with giving a generic statement about why most individuals were not chosen. I think about the statement of purpose?
however, maybe this year they aren’t due to high number of applications.

Catching up on this thread is such a rollercoaster! I’m so sorry this round was a disappointment for so many. Ask for feedback and reassess! It seems like there is a new program every year or so.

I planned on applying for Fall 2022, but part of me wants to wait a few years to see what other schools start programs and who gets accredited. I'd like a few more affordable options too. The return on investment just isn't there for me to spend $50000+ on the degree.

DSWs are launching every year! I thought I would share some of my research for next cycle:
*University of Kentucky*
Website:
https://socialwork.uky.edu/academics/dsw/about-dsw/
General info:
100% Online
Deadline: 4/15 (looks like one annual cohort)
Summer start
Three concentrations: Administrative Leadership, Clinical Social Work, or Military Behavioral Health.
Background:
https://uknow.uky.edu/campus-news/uk-responds-social-worker-shortage-launches-1st-online-doctorate-social-work-program
Pros:
Tier 1 Research University
Looks like they offer in-state tuition to all online students (like Bama) - with that, high probability that they prioritize in-state applicants.
Additional Pro: Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball ? ?
No real cons - it’s relatively new and there just isn’t a lot of information out there.

The three year post-grad lines schools up to get accreditation, which is on the horizon for DSW program. If they do not require 3 years post-grad, they cannot get accredited.

First of all! Congrats to all the acceptances!!!
I was avoiding homework again, so I started a spreadsheet of the different DSW programs. There are 24 in total, 15 being a member of GADE. I was collecting things like cohort size and cost, but haven't gotten very far haha. Here's a list of names for those of you who are interested. If any of you who are going to a DSW program would like to confirm any of these stats: Cost of program, cohort size, and detailed class delivery method -- I'd like to add it to the spread sheet. thinking of updating it and posting it here once a year.

My last two schools were on D2L and canvas. I like Canvas best. Really easy to work with. We use zoom for the synchronous classes, which can link directly from Canvas. Every professor does it differently though. I didn't realize that other programs use pre-recorded lectures from non-professors.

Yup, focus is on there! I've also included: If the program is at an R1 school or not, length of program, length of time out of MSW required, and dissertation or capstone. I'm not sure if I'll ever fill this all in, but is interesting.
