  1. There's also: http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/
  2. Exciting -- congrats everyone!
  3. My husband and I got married after his first year of his PhD program. It actually worked out quite well. I was working full time and didn't have as flexible a schedule as he did, so he was able to do a lot of the planning. And we were about 2 hours from our wedding site, so not very close. I think if the two of you work together you'll be fine! Congrats!
  4. I created a blog (but comments are turned off so it's purely informational) after I was accepted. I have the blog set up as a website so I didn't have to purchase a domain but could still put up some information about me. This isn't mine, but I used it as a template for what I ended up setting up: lorikidolopez.wordpress.com. The downside is that you don't get the yourname.com. Once I have something to add (pubs etc) I'll link my page on my school's website to my blog site. And ultimately, I may move it to an actual website.
  5. I agree with Clarks and Naturalizers. Also ECCO and Dansko but those can be a bit more expensive.
  6. I can't think of any reasons why you shouldn't. Expanding your network is typically a good thing.
  7. Typically, there're some kind of descriptions associated with SoPs and PSs that can help distinguish what they want to see in each. If not, if you're in touch with any current grad students or the grad assistant, they may be able to clarify.
  8. Faculty isn't the only path you can take with a PhD in sociology. Depending on your specialization, you could go into the business world and do research there or work in the government/policy realm. Other people might be able to provide more specific examples, but I don't think you're tied to only going into academia (although going into a program most will tell you they want to train their students to be effective academic researchers and your SOP should probably reflect that even if you're not 100% sure that's what you'll do at the end of the program).
  9. Thanks for your perspective timuralp!
  10. I agree with Alexis. I'm just kind of in waiting mode while things gear up. I'm sorry you didn't have a great first week though... I hope things get better!
  11. One thing you can try to do is start relationships with professors at the schools you're applying to this fall. Do the best you can on the GRE -- as others have said, it's just one part of your application. It sounds like you'd have a very good chance.
  12. You could try looking in the forum's meet and greet section and contacting people who are going to those schools directly.
  13. Mixed methods is what I would prefer, but it really depends on what the research question is.
  14. I'm being pulled in a few different directions this summer -- I actually can't wait for the fall when I can concentrate on school! 1) finish up work. I probably won't stop working until early Sept. 2) finish up volunteer responsibilities. not entirely sure what my end dates for these will be or even if I'll really stop them entirely. 3) travel! two trips planned, one in June, one in July. 4) continue working with the research group I've joined at the school I'll be attending. this includes one fieldwork trip in June.
  15. I did First Middle Maiden Married (with Maiden as a second middle name) and I haven't had any issues. It didn't cost any more than it would have had I dropped my maiden name. There are times there isn't an extra space for my second middle name but it hasn't prevented me from doing anything or caused any confusion. I think it's becoming more common.
  16. UC Riverside
  17. I finally got my rejection last week. It sounds like you made the wait list -- good luck!!
  18. I agree with this. Don't let your numbers (GRE/GPA) be an issue and concentrate on your future research plans and establishing relationships with professors (although there's debate as to whether this really helps people. In my case it did.).
  19. I'll be attending UCR in the fall. Not a location change for me either but I'll have quite the commute.
  20. I'll be 32 when I start my program in the fall. No kids. I know from meeting some of the current grad students there are some who are married, some who are older than me, and a few men with young children at home. I'm going to a preview day next week and it'll be interesting to see how my cohort will look.
  21. I've given up, but USC was a total long shot so I wasn't expecting much. That said, I would like it officially over and done with. I wonder what it was about this year... Applicants just weren't as strong?
  22. Message to you!
