Definitely exciting. And scary at the same time. Try to concentrate on the positive!

When to send thank you letters out to LOR writers?
socialcomm replied to jlee306's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I sent a quick thanks when they show up in the online system and then once I get responses from school I'll send another note to let them know the final outcome. -
So, how detailed was your proposed plan of research?
socialcomm replied to iamwhoiam's topic in Applications
I've been out of school so long it was hard to be too specific, but I tried to be as specific as possible. So, I gave a general overview of my area of interest and then provided a couple research questions I'm interested in investigating. Who knows where that will get me! Good luck and happy holidays to you too. -
This is me too. I think it does help people make the connection.

I'm interested in social change/social movements. Ultimately, I'd like to teach and do research.

While this works for those who don't have masters yet, for those who already have one (or in my case two) masters this is a harder pill to swallow. Really? A THIRD terminal masters? Augh.

interviews with english departments?
socialcomm replied to manhattanbusmap's topic in Waiting it Out
I'd think it'd really depend on the school. I'm sure different schools have different interview processes. Have you made contacts with current students in any of the programs you've applied to? You might ask them. -
I'm not really blowing anything off, but I just signed up for a half marathon in February and am considering signing up for a marathon in June. So I'm going to try to funnel nervous energy into running.

I don't know the answer to this, but just wanted to say good luck! I hope they're some leeway to take jammed servers into consideration!
-
You could also take a look at the number of current students in each cohort to get a general idea of how many people they look for. (obviously different than the number of offers they give out though)

If the app asks for it, I'd do it. Maybe think of it as an even higher level summary of your SOP/fit statement?
-
Would you wait til the last min for your 2nd choice?
socialcomm replied to Jennszoo's topic in Applications
Agree with this statement. From what I've heard (from my programs at least) no one looks at the apps until after the deadline so it doesn't matter WHEN you submit as long as you submit before the deadline. -
I agree with rogue. It's just a small piece of your application. Make sure the rest of your application is strong.

Only applied to 3. Accepted: Possibly one, but most likely without funding Another I'm very likely just to get the form rejection letter emailed in March/April, if not earlier. The last, I'm unsure of. If I could at least get an interview I'd be happy.

Do you have questions about their research? What projects they've advised in the past?
-
Sounds like you have a good plan! Keep taking deep breaths!
-
Do you have the time and drive to study for and take it again? If so, go for it!

It was November 6. I think it was worth the trip! -
Deadlines - submitting on/close to a problem?
socialcomm replied to Fallapplicant77's topic in Sociology Forum
I've heard (from one particular program) they wait until the deadline to look at anything so it really doesn't matter when you submit, as long as it's before the deadline. On the other hand, I've heard of websites getting overloaded with users on the day of/hours before the deadlines... -
Critique My Statement of Purpose!
socialcomm replied to Tam's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
Think of the transferable skills from all of your experience, even if they're not directly applicable. -
I'm so sorry. That really stinks. Unfortunately no advice...

LORs from Profs in other disciplines
socialcomm replied to mzungu's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I'm in the same situation as rogue -- going into a completely new field so all my LOR writers are from other disciplines. I don't think it'll be a problem. -
If you can afford it, have the time to do it, and are very interested in the school, I'd go in person. Use the time to set up meetings with current students, other faculty you're interested in, tours of the school, etc... And it's hard to do, but try to stay calm and relax! Good luck!
