  1. What the heck does gossiping about your graduate students have to do with academic freedom? Also, I don't think the TA handled the situation particularly poorly, but I do think she should have been prepared to handle it better since the subject was likely to come up, given the class.
  2. Anger is a coping mechanism, I suppose. Not a particularly productive one.
  3. They offered to 1.
  4. I think it varies, and there may be more borderline cases this year, but I believe the incoming class this year is reduced somewhat to compensate for the fact that all 20 initial offers last year accepted. I was told in my own case it was not a totally done deal, but almost certainly a no. Professors here do usually go full-court press once they've selected their candidates.
  5. Thanks very much!
  6. Yeah, and no, I have no contacts that way.
  7. FYI, I was just told that Harvard admits are pending final university approval, and if you haven't heard, that's probably a no.
  8. Just got an informal email from my POI at OSU letting me know I was accepted, pending final university approval!
  9. This is my second application cycle - my first ended with rejections from all 7 PhD programs and 2 MA offers, each partially funded. I thought I was ready for doctoral work when I applied, but the admissions committees were right. I wasn't. My app this year was so much stronger. I was able to articulate my research interests and goals much more firmly. So, keep at it.
  10. I like the Lager SE single-speed series. They run ~$350 new and are super durable and low-maintenance. For locks, Kryptonite is your best bet. If you're not in a high crime area, the 'grey' level u-lock is probably enough, but if not you might want to splurge on an 'orange' or 'yellow'. Make sure it's long enough to lock your front wheel!
  11. That seems like a hell of a leap of faith to ask a student to take...
  12. This is for Stanford, right? I didn't think they had any medievalists - at least, their department web page says they don't.
  13. When I applied to ND two years ago, they didn't send out rejections until late March. Part of the reason why I didn't apply again this time around. Also, you know, South Bend, ew.
  14. AAAHHH I got bit by a zombie!
  15. I haven't seen any Chicago rejections?
  16. They do, but it's not a long list, and they did not take anyone off it last year. I was also told they over-enrolled last year and that this would probably result in fewer slots this year. Three, actually, if you count last week. I don't know what to think. I'll be able to say things more definitely tomorrow afternoon.
  17. And Harvard no longer has a ThD
  18. Fun story: my supervisor can trace his intellectual lineage, Doktorvater to Doktorvater, back to Hegel. Further fun story: I read an 19th century commentary on a 17th century apocalyptic text which interpreted a passage to mean that either Hegel or one of his disciples would be the Antichrist.
  19. "Enjoyable German prose" is not a concept with which I am familiar
  20. I know about 50% of my questions concern travel, research, and conference funding - how can a medievalist work if he or she can't get to Europe? - but this may be less relevant to your field. I would certainly find out what projects currently interest your adviser, and what interested him or her about your SOP.
  21. Congrats! She was my POI there as well. Her paper on masculinity and the Gregorian reform still sticks out as one which blew my little undergraduate mind. Choosing between her and Lyon is a task I only envy a little bit I work on connectivity between monasteries and their surrounding communities in the long twelfth century, so I'm sure we'll see each other around!
  22. Bump for more entries
  23. Berkeley must have upped their package something fierce - last I heard Chicago gave about $24k. Who are you most interested in at UCB?
  24. Yeah, between Remensnyder, Conant, and Bonde, the medieval faculty within my area at Brown is quite strong.
