  1. Im actually an MA student there now. It's a really good program. I have collegues waiting on the PhD program who havent heard back yet. If you have questions about the program PM me.
  2. I got the same email. I know for a fact the PhD committee is sitting today for their criminology department so no choices have been made on the cohort. So, the invitation is likely a general invitation to all applicants.
  3. Heard back from UToronto. I called them and they indicated they couldnt take me on as a student. Competition is fierce there. Still waiting on UOttawa crim but got a call from a prof there yesterday probing about my funding offer from UAlberta. Looking good
  4. Considering the smaller amount of students, I would say yes. It's likely however, PhDs will be notified prior to MAs. Please let me know if you hear anything back from them I will return the favour.
  5. First, where are you applying to? Some of us could help you out as we may have contact the department or know faculty etc etc... Second, I strongly suggest to contact the grad admin, or even better, the Chair (the latter if she/he is your POI or you know them). The reason why you need to contact - in person, by phone - is because they generally have an ear to the happenings in the department and the selection committee. They are the first ones to know which candidates get in and which do not. They are the ones responsible for putting together all the welcome/rejection letters. So give them a ring. I called all my institutions and got to know the grad admin from the department and they were all very nice people I also got to know when the selection committee was sitting (at all institutions) and when I should hear back - one of my prospective school's grad admin told me to call them on a certain date and they would even tell me if i made the cut or not BEFORE welcoming letters are sent out (saves me like 3 WEEKS of stressing!!). From what I sense, The grad admins generally sympathize with applicants as they see it all from rejections to admissions. Good luck and remember, call.
  6. Anyone waiting on the Centre for Criminiology and Sociolegal studies? Competition is very tight with only 2-4 admissions per year. Called department last week and they told me selection committee sat on the 28th to make a 'short list.' I'm still as "under review" status online. Apparently faculty will be sitting this week to determine the lucky PhD students this week! Good luck to all applicants.
  7. Keep this thread alive people! We need to hear back from all of you!
  8. Usually it's the departmental Chair
  9. Congrats!!! What program? I'm waiting on UofT as well.
  10. Why not give them a call. Let them know you are hearing back from other schools. They will at the minimum give you a time frame. Good luck!
  11. You should be in regular contact with your POI either way. So drop him/her an email and ask what is happening with the selection process.
  12. Congratulations! Keeps us informed as to your funding package!
  13. Good job! what program did you apply for?
  14. Great! thanks for the heads up. I did apply for SSHRC but got rejected at the university. I will reapply next year though. On another note - for those waiting for UToronto and UOttawa Phd Criminology, I contact both departments today asking about the admission timeframe. Ottawa U selection committee sits this week sometime and UToronto will be making the shortlist of applicants today with decisions made by NEXT wednesday. So, those applying to PHd Crim should hear back from these universities within 2-3 weeks.
  15. Hi all, I just got an accaptance with a funding package from UAlberta in the Soc Phd program. At this point im not sure what a "competitive" funding offer might look like? My package consists of a total of 98k over 4 years (TA/RAships) plus 5k entrance (1st year only). Can anyone offer insight on this? I understand that most Phd progrmas will offer the TA/RAship which leaves just the 5k in additional awards in my case. Im super greatful for this but I would like to know how this weighs out comparatively.
  16. Seeing as there is no posts about this anywhwere I figured I would start one! I havent heard anything back yet. Still "under review". As the applications were due Feb. 1st, it could be premature to start speculating but who knows with these things. Apparently (according to the grad admin there) they only let in TWO student last year (!!?!). Can anyone confirm?
  17. What are your thoughts on accepting an offer and reneging later on? I'm thinking of accepting my offer at UA tentativley in the case that I do mangage to squeeze into the Center of Crim at U of T. I know this is a 'faux-pas' but surely this has happend in the past? I will receive my my offical letter next week and apparently will have only two weeks to make a decision (honestly quite ridiculous if you ask me!).
  18. Thanks! Hoping for UToronto though. From what i heard the criminology PhD program is HIGHLY competitive. As in, they let only TWO cadidates in last year. I don't even know why I'm getting the slightest of hopes up though.
  19. Got a phone call from UAlberta last night. Got (informally) accepted into their sociology PhD program. Still waiting on UToronto criminology and UOttawa criminology. I heard from a prof at UOttawa that the Crim Department that the selection committee will be sitting to review applications March 8th. Best of luck to all applicants.
