  1. I have not heard anything from them. Personally I think their admission process is stupid because from my understanding if we have not heard anything we are still in the running but will not be officially "wait listed" until April 15...after the deadline. I just don't get it. I am also just frustrated in general with the schools I am wait listed for not getting back with me. A few of the deadlines for 1st round applicants have passed and I still have not heard anything. If I have been rejected I think it would just be nice for the schools to let me know as common curtesy, as I did pay their application fee and all.

  4. Mid April?! That is when the national deadline is! I am sorry they are stringing you along for so long.

  6. I forgot that University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also admits out of field students and has them take an extra year of pre-reqs before starting the regular grad program.
  7. I am very interested in autism, but after doing research on it for a year and talking about it extensively in some of my psychology classes, I think I may want to mix things up and concentrate on something else for grad school. I remember when I took language acquisition that I was very interested in how that and reading literacy were connected. Back when I thought about going the school psychology route I thought that I would do my whole thesis on that and how you could improve a child's reading level. I would like to maybe do something similar only spin it around to be more appropriate for the slp field.
  8. I know of a few others: Illinois: SIU- Carbondale Missouri: University of Central Missouri North Carolina: Western Carolina University, Appalachian State Nebraska: University of NE at Omaha Kentucky: University of Kentucky, University of Louisville Indiana: IU-Bloomington These are 3 year leveler programs

  10. That's true. I live in Illinois and there (at least according to ASHA ed find) are two schools that have an undergrad program in speech pathology but do not have a masters degree program. I have said this before, but that just floods the grad market in Illinois and probably the surrounding states, which is why undergrad programs in Illinois are especially pressured to weed out students to the point where they will pressure people who do not have a 4.0 GPA to major in a degree that is "beneath them". At least this is the attitude that my undergrad institution has, and other schools in Illinois from what I have heard. It also doesn't help that undergraduate degrees, and not graduate degrees, is how colleges get their money. Because of that they want to graduate as many undergrads as possible but keep their grad student graduates the same number. While I know that not all people with a CDS degree will go on to speech pathology (there is still Audiology and other career paths people may choose) something really needs to be done about the massive amounts of CDS undergrads schools are churning out. Especially when you factor in people like me, who don't have a CDS degree, are getting admitted into three year leveling programs and taking spots away from CDS undergrads. But that is a whole other issue.
  11. Yes, I made a last minute road trip to Radford for my spring break last week. I was a little bit hesitant about the school before going as I just did not know much about it, but as soon as I walked on the campus I fell in love with it. The buildings look fairly new and the campus is kept neat and clean. Which is unfortunately quite different from my undergrad institution. It was also spring break there so most of the faculty was gone when we toured the building most of the slp classes are held, but I did meet a few faculty members that were VERY nice. I also really like the Radford area because it is a small town with enough things to do to keep you busy, but with bigger towns close by with even more opportunities Which is both great for me and my clinical experiences and employment after grad school and my boyfriend as he is a recent college grad and will be looking for a job. Basically, it was a great trip and I feel much better about going there in the fall if I do decide on it (and it looks very likely that I will).
  12. I agree with the earlier deadlines. My friends who all applied for grad programs in different fields all had their applications due in November and December. Yet the earliest I had was one school Jan. 15th with the rest having a deadline in February. If schools know that they will receive a massive amount of applications then they should allow themselves more time to look them over in order to give their accepted students more time to decide where they want to go. I think it would also be a lot less stress for them because they do not have to deal with such a time crunch.

  17. If you have a high GPA (3.8+) from what I have been told and shadowed a slp or have other similar experience with the field you can have a good shot at getting in a 3 year program. I'm a Psychology major with a 3.89 GPA (3.86 at some schools since I sent my transcript early) and took a few pre-req courses during my undergrad and got A's in them. I also shadowed a speech pathologist and had a year of autism treatment research with a School Psychology professor, which can easily cross over to come in handy in the slp field. I think these things really helped me to get accepted or wait listed and not fully rejected from my schools. If you could somehow manage to take one or two slp classes before you apply and shadow a slp and possibly have them write you a LOR I think these things will really put you ahead of others in your situation.
  18. I think things like Praxis pass rates, employment rates and the amount of students who graduate on time matters the most, not the individual rankings. Other things like tuition, where the campus is located and the employment/clinical opportunities that are available matter too. Each person has a set of things that are important to them when it comes to grad school that may not be important to others. Some people may just want to attend the cheapest school they can get into because they don't want the loans, others may want to attend a big city with lots of clinical and employment opportunities, others may want to stay close to family, etc. You should think about what is personally important to you and pick a program based on that. As long as a program is fully ASHA certified you should be fine, the rankings really should not be a deciding factor unless you love two programs equally and just can't decide, but that's just me.
  19. Congrats to everyone that has been accepted and I will keep everyone who is in limbo in my thoughts and will be sending good vibes your way. I have a question and I don't know if anyone can help me out, but I might as well try. I am currently visiting Radford and absolutely love the area and the college. I also met with a faculty member and toured the clinic and it seems very nice. However, people on the results board have been bashing the program and calling it sub par. After researching the program I really can't see what the problem is. They have close to a 100% passing rate on the Praxis exams and enjoy 100% placement rate after graduation. It looks like I will be attending the program because it is the cheapest out of my remaining schools because I can get done with one less semester and the area is the best for my boyfriend as he is coming with me and needs to find a job. It looks by the Praxis pass rate and employment rate that many people have been successful in the program, but I just want to be fully aware of what I may have to deal with if I do attend the program.
  20. I am actually an undergrad at eiu and although I am not a speech pathology major I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the town and school. I also know some things about the speech pathology department, but I am sure you probably know more than I do at this point. I am away on a college visit to Virginia so I may not be on the site much the next few days but I will be back by the end of the weekend.

  22. Congrats to all the Vanderbilt acceptances!!!
  23. Just received an email from App State that I have been wait listed. Since I got accepted to Radford I would have turned down an acceptance anyway because when researching the Radford area and the areas of the other schools I should hear from thoroughly, it looks like Radford is the better bet financially and career wise than Boone. Just two more schools and this can all be over!
  24. AY still says my application is complete and ready for review. Nothing has changed for me.
