  1. I've reduced my American list to 7. A friend/colleague at my lab has recommended German programs as the Max Planck institute has just started a Biology of Aging department, so depending on the American schools I may apply to a couple German ones.
  2. Figured it's about as accurate as the average non-professor's guess in those topics. Also - who doesn't like graphs? And who doesn't like graphs that give (possibly inflated) ounces of hope?
  3. Just a fun (read: very rough guesstimate) way to determine how likely you are to get into at least one PhD program. How I suggest using this graph: Use P(5%) if GPA < 3.00, felony on record, or academic probation etc. Use P(10%) if applying to mostly difficult to get in schools, or lower stats (GPA < 3.3, GRE percentages <60%) and no papers Use P(20%) if applying to mostly middle of the road schools, with average stats (GPA ~= 3.5, GRE percentages ~= 75%) Use P(30%) if applying to mostly "safety" schools, or if you have high stats (GPA >3.8, GRE percentages >90%) and several papers And remember, these suggestions are very loosely based in reality. Those interested in how I made it, I used the Bernoulli distribution: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli_distribution) Enjoy!
  4. Perfectly acceptable for the paper to be single spaced. So far my schools have asked for 1-3 and no more than 2 pages, so I've stuck with a 2 page essay. The schools that require 3 essays are the bane of my existence.
  5. Figured this forum is more appropriate for this question. I'm a senior Neuroscience student and I've submitted a few of my applications so far, I'm applying to cellular and molecular bio PhD programs in my signature, with MIT ranking at 2 for a stretch school and Tufts-Sackler and UTHSCSA ranking at 56 and 82 respectively for safety schools. The rest are in the 10-30 range. GPA (overall): 3.04 GPA (major): 3.39 GPA (last 60): 3.11 GRE: 157Q, 161V, 4.5AW One paper at PLoS Genetics, 4th author, 2nd paper in progress One poster at same university 3 years experience in bio of aging lab = +1 great recommendation 1 summer research position studying publication networks = +1 good recommendation 3rd recommendation from biochem professor who offered me teaching assistant position Have I made good school choices or is it too top heavy? Thanks for looking!
  6. Also, Nathan Shock centers are good bets: http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dab/nathan-shock-centers-excellence
  7. Considering dropping MIT and replacing it with Albert Einstein - Yeshiva University. Anybody know more about this school's acceptance rate?
  8. Hey, another aging guy, sweet! That's what I'm applying for for PhD programs. Pretty much all of the schools in my signature are known for aging research, except maybe not UT Austin as much. I also recommend this site to see where people who have money and do aging research are: http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/announcements/2013/09/recent-nia-grants#.UnGBMBCQNbw
  9.
