NYU and NYC/NJ area schools
mystiqueSLP replied to clydeyo12's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Nice! I keep hearing that about NYU from people which is a shame :/ I really do like NYU's program despite whatever administrative problems they may have. I like the courses they offer, the on-campus clinics, and the study abroad program. It's a little depressing that people keep saying that their program isn't good and still not mention what exactly is not so great about it. I've only heard about disorganization which, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't seem like a HUGE downside. I guess we'll see on Thursday. Congrats!!! So are they accepting through email only? -

Yup! I just found out I have a quiz on Thursday but I'll just talk with my prof and make it up later. Are you thinking about going now? -

Still "under review". I'm assuming bad news now :/ -

Good luck! Mine is still "under review". I wonder if that's bad news..? I live like 15-20 minutes away so maybe I'll get something before they update my online status -

Ahh...I'm 21 but I want to start a family before I'm 30 (I would hate to be an old mom!). And this education system is insane, trying to make us pay over 100k for classes we still have to stress over doing well in! My uncle was able to go to NYU Poly and pay back his loans right away so my parents think I'll be ok if I just follow his footsteps. But he graduated in electrical engineering just when computers and the Internet took off so he got super lucky :/ -

I was planning to seriously penny pinch for 5-7 years and hopefully make/save enough money to just pay it all off before 10 years. I mean, there's still a life to live and a future to plan. What about a new house or car or vacations or kids? Having loans forgiven after 20 years would be just a waste of time for me. My parents are scared to death for me. I'm more blasé about it, like, what else can I do? It's not like this is a silly investment. -

They're not bad though...now I'm just more surprised. I'm sure you will get in somewhere this year, that waitlist is probably the beginning of good news for you -

Good luck! What schools are you still waiting to hear from? -

Congrats on the waitlist, there's still hope! And I'm not trying to be invasive, but is there a weak point in your application that could explain the rejections? It seems like you have so much background in SLP! I'm just really surprised whenever I read your signature and still don't see an acceptance for you. -

20 years? I don't know if I could have loans hanging over my head for 20 years. It's a good backup plan but it doesn't seem like it's guaranteed, especially with that horror story. -

I'm sorry Have you heard back from the schools you interviewed at? Your stats look decent, it's a little odd that you haven't been accepted anywhere yet...especially since you applied to 10+ schools! -

I agree completely. It'll be tough but just penny-pinch your way through and you'll be fine. I'm really overly optimistic though. I have about 25k in undergrad loans in addition to my future 100k grad school loans :/ -

Montclair is starting to send out decisions according to the results page! My application status still says "Under review" though... Good luck everyone! -

Nah, my faculty advisor at my undergrad said that. I live out-of-state so I don't know if a CUNY school would be cheap for me. I keep getting these great recommendations to apply to other schools I butfeel like it's too risky to reapply again, I know I barely got into NYU this year. -

I'm considering the same things but I think considering your future circumstances and the kind of person you are when it comes to money is important. I've heard of people with a lot of loans who pay them off quickly and people with relatively small loans who take decades to pay them off. In my future, I know for sure that I can probably live with my parents for a few years (even if I don't want to) and save up to pay off as much of my loans as quickly as possible. I know that I don't like spending money and will have no problem living without cable or the latest fashion trends. I will be quite happy in a room with a bed, Internet, running water, and food. And personally, I'm also thinking about what experiences are worth having and if I want to risk reapplying and possibly getting in nowhere next time. Despite my hesitation with its tuition, I think NYU would be fantastic for me and I think going to school and working in the city will force me to grow up quickly since I went to a nearby state school. I know NY has a loan forgiveness program with the Dept of Education but I'm not clear on the specifics. -

Thank you! I feel like it's a huge risk to reapply again so I'm trying to avoid that route as much as possible. -

I laughed. Clearly having a GRE score that is 5 points higher than someone else's will get you accepted over them I'm still waiting to hear back from Montclair so I'm not sure yet. A lot of financial stuff to work out :/ My advisor says I should just close my eyes to the loans and go for it. He says it's a great school and the experience of going to school and working in the city would be a good change of pace for me since I went to a state school. And I guess it wouldn't be impossible to pay back the loans in this field and there are loan forgiveness programs so we'll see. I'm also visiting NYU this Thursday so hopefully that visit will help me make up my mind! -

It's fine to be stressed out and upset but being bitter and making assumptions about a program (while implying that others didn't get in because of their achievements) is pretty rude. I was rejected from nearly all of the programs I applied to and I am upset about it but there were a lot of factors in my rejections. My GPA wasn't as high as it could have been, I needed more in-field experience, this or that could have been better. There were better, more deserving applicants out there or the school didn't have enough room. I'm okay with all of these things. I'll do better next time and that's fine. There's no need for me to bash a program because they didn't accept me. Also, to apply to a program, get rejected, and then say you got in a "better program anyway" makes me wonder why they applied to that program to begin with. From my time in this forum, it seems like there is no such thing as a "better program". I just wanted to add that I just saw this post on the results page: "School must be extremely political seeing as I have a 297 and a poster below got in with a 292. Explain that.". Oh my god. -

I wish that person mentioned which programs accepted him/her, it really was an inspirational post. From what I've gathered, apparently Stockton accepts people who are already connected to the faculty and not by merit...? -

I've been doing the same. The post is gone now, but I read someone complaining about posts shouldn't be marked as spam and that people didn't know there was a forum I've also been marking the ones that weren't done correctly (someone put "All" as their institution - not helpful). -

That's what concerns me - the course description is "Quantitative methods used in psychological research. Regular exercises required. One semester of college-level mathematics recommended." so I'm a little worried. We used a textbook called "Behavioral Statistics in Simple English" though and basically went over every common statistical method (calculating confidence intervals to doing ANOVA tests) so it really should be categorized as a statistics class. -

Stats and psych stats are the only ones that fulfill math? My psych stats course was called "Quantitative Methods in Psychology", would that count? -

Thanks! I would really like to join the state chapter one but there isn't one for my undergrad and I don't know where I'm going for grad school so I guess I'll have to wait for now. Are you part of the national organization now?
