SLP 2013 CALIFORNIA Admissions!!
mystiqueSLP replied to jackiet15's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
They're mailing decisions? I thought they were going to email us...SDSU is really taking their time. I'm pretty sure it's because we had to mail in our application and it probably took them 2 months just to organize everything. -

It's the date that most schools recognize as "mid-March" and start getting back to you if that's what they stated as their notification of decision period. -

I'm freaking out about TC too, I thought they would start getting back to us by now. You shouldn't worry though, it'll probably be another acceptance for you! -

To all of the people who got wait-listed and rejected: Don't lose hope yet! There are so many schools to still hear from for all of you. It isn't even the magical 15th of March yet! I'm really reconsidering that maybe the loans for NYU will be worth it to attend after seeing so many people here who have applied multiple times. It's honestly making me panic that if I give up NYU and try again next year, I won't get in anywhere at all. I can't imagine I'll be lucky enough again. -

Aw, this really made me smile So adorable! And I agree. If it's meant to happen, it will. If it's not, there's something even better out there waiting for you. -

My lab director introduced himself by his first name as well. My general rule of thumb is to address a stranger by their highest title unless introduced otherwise. -

Haha, I've been reporting them all week. I was happy to see a post related to TC and some really chatty posts disappear. And why would you ever address someone with a doctorate by the first name especially for a school you're trying to get in? You should be very polite and respectful.. -

Do you have any experience personally working with children or adults who have speech or language disorders? It seems you have more leadership experiences than actual hands-on experience. Volunteering at hospitals, SLP clinics and working with your target demographic (bilingual children or adults with Huntington's) would be a good idea -
That sucks, I'm sorry All of my applications sent me confirmation emails after I paid/submitted, including TC, so I'm surprised this happened.

When I was telling my parents about SLP, my dad went, "Pathology? Doesn't that have to do with disease? Are you going to be like a speech doctor?" and I sort of just nodded my head...so they're a little more relieved now My sister has been to NH and she says the same thing. I had no idea there was even a French speaking population there though! -
Oh no, mine says, "Your degree application for admission to Teachers College is complete!"... :/ I really think you should call them instead - emails can take a while to get looked at. Does the application say why it isn't submitted? Did the payment for the application fee not go through?

My dad says the same thing, he basically told me that schools will accept me because they want my money and that it really isn't that hard to get in anywhere. My mom has no idea what SLP is and keeps asking me, "Why don't you go to engineering school instead? Or medical school? How are you going to get a job with this silly speech-language pathology business?". Wow, I never knew that! I will definitely look into those states -
Emailing or calling is a good idea. And see if you can log in here: https://colteach.askadmissions.net/vip/

I've heard that French and Spanish are really similar - I can even correctly guess what some Spanish words mean when spoken to because it sounds just like its French counterpart to me. If I can, would like to learn some Spanish while in grad school too. I do have NYU if it comes down to rejections from everywhere else. It'll just be a case of me deciding whether a lot in loans would be worth it or reapply next year (and be called a loser by my family who don't even know what SLP is! :/ ). -

The problem with the Southern/Southwestern states for me is that almost all of the bilingual children speak Spanish which I, very stupidly, did not choose to learn (I've kicked myself for choosing French over Spanish - what am I going to do with French?? I should have applied to schools in Canada...). There are a lot of people out there who can speak Spanish which would give them a leg up over me for programs like that. Big metro areas like NYC and cities in CA have a more diverse population besides Spanish speakers (hopefully some French/Burmese/Chinese/Japanese speakers) so I feel like I would be more useful and have a better chance there. I'll definitely look into it though, maybe take some Spanish classes during the year along with some SLP pre-reqs if I don't go anywhere. -

Actually, I was going to apply to Boston U but they used CSDCAS (I've only heard bad things about it) and I think it wanted transcripts or GRE scores to be sent out about 6 weeks before the deadline. Since it was around the first week of December when I saw this part, I thought it would automatically disqualify me for being late with that so I ended up not applying. -

I'm not sure. I know I'll definitely geographically expand my list if I have to apply again. Personally, I've always been a Northeast/city/coastal girl and I have family in CA. I applied to IU and UNC under the advisement of a professor (he used to work closely with the SLP department at IU) who thought I had a reasonably strong out-of-field application and should try for some reaches. I want to work with multicultural children who speak English as a second language which is more easily accessible in large urban areas like NYC and San Diego though. -

Do you know exactly when Montclair State will get back to us? And you applied to a lot of places I wish I applied to more places for more options.. -
I don't know what to expect!

What exactly did you expect? You seem to have some options and no rejections so far.. -

That is so early! I wish schools would at least agree on a deadline on when is the latest date to send decisions out and when is the latest date to put down a deposit. I don't even know when TC is going to send out decisions because they're clearly not following last year's timeline. And SDSU has said they will MAKE decisions in mid-March and notify in April. I'm pretty sure the reason why it's taking them so long is because they had required everything to be in paper and mailed to them so they've probably been organizing all those documents by hand for the past 2 months. I think calculating financial aid is trickier because a lot of schools have later deadlines for the FAFSA and a lot of people I know don't do their taxes until February at the earliest. -

I wish schools (ahem - SDSU, Montclair...alhough Montclair's application was due later so they are forgiven) would notify earlier than April especially if you have to decide by April 15th. That hardly gives me any time to visit (schedule a flight for SDSU) or compare with other programs before having to decide and scrounge up some deposit money to send in. -

You will NOT be freaking out because you will be enjoying that music festival as you should! You've had a tough week and deserve a break from all this stress so no checking! I hope you see good news AFTER the music festival so you can end this week right.
