  1. This will probably sound like a dumb question but do you need to join the state chapter before joining the national org? There isn't one for my undergrad institution so I don't think I can join my state chapter organization..
  2. SHU is definitely closed and classes resume on Tuesday according to my friend who is attending the school.
  3. Mid April?? Oh man....seems like I'll be paying the deposit for NYU either way now.
  4. Ah...you're able to request just a certain amount of the loans from NYU, right? Like if you need only 30k for the semester and want to take out only that amount without any refund check?
  5. Is the refund check the same as the loan where you have to pay it back eventually too?
  6. Why would you COMPLAIN over acceptances?? How is that a bad thing?
  7. I'm commuting and I roughly calculated that it should be around 45k for me
  8. I just got my financial aid package and it's basically all loans and 3k for work/study, totaling to 68k. The tuition should be lower by my calculations though, since it really determines on how many credits/points you'll be taking. I have a feeling that this is the maximum amount for Steinhardt graduate students taking 15 credits/points per semester.
  9. I have the same question but I'll be commuting from home so the cost won't be too bad for me. Is it really worth it?
  10. I think a lot of first-time applicants underestimate how competitive the field is. It really isn't communicated to you until you're actually stressing out over decisions. I thought my application was ok, not great, but pretty ok until I started reading the results page and the threads on this board. I just knew I was in danger with a low overall GPA (3.2) and applying to pretty competitive schools afterwards. My advice would be to work on weak points of your application and cast a much wider net, especially if you're not geographically restricted. My advisor said that one problem for first-time applicants is that they try to stay close to home. His point was basically, "You're just putting another restrictive factor when it's already competitive enough." My goal was to get away from NJ as far as possible so I don't know what I'm going to do yet - reapply or attend NYU (I'm assuming Montclair is a rejection). I would probably work on my GPA, maybe get more experience, and definitely give myself more time to prepare the application (I really rushed through it in December at the last minute which probably affected my SOPs). Good luck to all! Some of you might end up hearing from your waitlists in the end
  11. It's crazy that you haven't been accepted anywhere yet and haven't heard back from so many....you applied to a lot of schools!
  12. I can agree with this completely. I'm an out-of-field applicant with pretty pathetic stats so I focused a lot on my SOP and tried to show how all my experiences led to my passion for SLP (especially working with children). I also worked really closely with my LOR writers and I know for sure they said great things about me. Taking classes over and the GREs again can be expensive so my advice would be to just focus on SOPs and gaining more (unique) experiences. Good luck! I hope you get an acceptance soon!
  13. Do you have the pre-reqs? If you don't, you have to take them those undergrad courses so it could mean that.
  14. What is the average SLP salary? I keep getting a wide range when I look it up, from $25,000-$80,000. And while I do think it should be relatively easy to pay loans back if you're frugal, it also depends how much in loans you have for undergrad and how expensive your grad program is.
  15. Is anyone seriously considering NYU/attending the admitted students luncheon? And has anyone seen anything on Albert about their financial aid package?
  16. Congrats!!! Super excited for you! It was your top choice, right?
  17. I don't know any students who completed the program but my friend goes to SHU for her undergrad. It's a small school and a bit old-fashioned where a lot of administrative stuff is done by hand and through face-to-face visits with an advisor. That may or may not be your thing but my friend experienced a "clerical error: where she took two courses that ended up fulfilling the same requirement so now she's taking an extra class this semester to catch up and graduate on time. I've heard that Seton Hall has a strong clinical focus that is pretty good too. As for the town itself, I love my hometown It's small but diverse and everyone is pretty friendly. A lot of families with young children and business people commuting to the city for work. SHU's campus is a little close to the "bad" side of town, near Newark, but the village/town of South Orange is nice. It's close to the train station, a movie theater, some restaurants and there are always cops patrolling so it's pretty safe to walk around at night.
  18. I think it'll be worth it to miss class for a day or two to visit if you are really considering NYU as an option. Unless there's an exam or an important assignment due that day, I can't see how it will negatively affect your class grade that badly. I'll be missing class too but I'm currently finishing up my undergrad and my professors allow us to have 3 "free" days which I haven't used yet. It helps that it's only a 45 min train ride from my school and I don't have classes on Friday though. I've never heard anything about NYU losing its accreditation. As for the reputation, it depends if you mean "prestige" of the school/program or quality of the school/program. I don't think prestige should matter as long as the faculty is excellent and the curriculum prepares you well. If the quality is lacking, I would be worried but if you can't find any info about it, I wouldn't worry too much. Bad news does travel fast after all, I'm sure it would have came up in your search. Personally, I like the program at NYU and I think its "personality" fits me and what I want to study. It's in a large city, close to home but not too close (Seton Hall is a 10 min walk from my house, didn't even consider applying there ), and they offer courses that look really interesting like the one on Baby Trachs. I also like how they offer a summer abroad program as well. The only downside is that NYU is super expensive for me (I need to go for 3 years since I don't have pre-reqs). I have to get in touch with someone at the financial aid office soon.
  19. Funny anecdote that isn't really related: my sister is a freshman in college doing work-study at the university's graduate program for applied and clinical psych. She told me that it was her who was organizing the applications into files and placing them into accepted/rejected/waitlisted piles according to a list. Every applicant had perfect scores and long resumes full of experiences but she told me how one guy was rejected for being "too obsessive" during the interview and the professor noted in his comments, "don't know how I'll teach with him in the class". I teased her about putting an applicant in the wrong pile and she said she made sure she didn't I know this isn't really related to SLP but I was really surprised to hear that some freshman could be handling our applications in the end.
  20. I emailed them and they said if you apply late, you won't be eligible for any scholarships but you will still receive financial aid. I'm not sure if funding is included in that though.
  21. I live down the street from Seton Hall (literally) so ask me if you want to know what the town or school is like
  22. Ouch, I only have two classes that I want to skip (why is this on a Thursday instead of the weekend anyways?). I would really like to meet the faculty and tour the department, get a sense of what the program is like in person.
  23. Anyone admitted to NYU thinking about going to the admitted students luncheon on April 4th?
  24. Thanks. I expected my rejections but it still took my breath away because I was hoping my experiences and letters would outshine my GPA or at least get me a waitlist somewhere. I feel so embarrassed for coming home from work and just crying over it when some people don't even have one acceptance at all. That being said, I'm pretty excited for NYU's admitted students luncheon now Things were just meant for me to not go to TC or SDSU.
  25. Rejected from 2 schools today
