2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

That's good to hear. GREs are way too expensive to keep re-taking and it's hard to come back from a low GPA. -
SCHOLARSHIPS!!! Masters Speech Pathology

I'm not sure if I'm considered a "minority" (Asian-American) but I'm also having a hard time finding one. -
NYU and NYC/NJ area schools
mystiqueSLP replied to clydeyo12's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
NYU has a good program. I think their reputation as a school is a little overhyped and a case of 'hard to get into + famous people + expensive tuition = better school'. Personally, I really like how NYU has set their program up and what it has to offer. That being said, Montclair is a good school too but really hard to get into since so many people apply there and they have very few seats available. Classes will probably be basically the same and it seems nobody cares about what school you go to as long as you do well there. I'm sure there will be employers who will judge a person on where they went to school every once in a while but there are people who will judge you on anything. You just have to ask yourself if having a lot in loans is worth a maybe slight upper hand sometimes. -

I'll have to look into their pre-req requirements. I was trying to avoid applying to any school in NJ though (my lab director said it would be tougher to get into state schools since they'll see you as using them as a safety), my parents wanted me to apply to Montclair. SLP admissions really does seem unpredictable though. I've been stalking the results page and comparing my stats to people who were accepted in previous years at SDSU and TC and it's hard to predict. It surprises me that a lot of people have to apply multiple times because they didn't get in anywhere the year before despite having good stats. -

Thanks, I've heard the same about their aid (or lack thereof) from friends who were accepted for undergrad. It's a shame because I really do like their program, location, and study abroad opportunity. Out of all of the schools I applied to, I think NYU was the least competitive one (according to EdFind). If anything, my state school might be the most competitive one due to the amount of applications vs. number of seats (I don't know how accurate these numbers are but only 7% are accepted!). I was rejected by Indiana recently (expected, haven't updated my signature yet) so I have three more schools to go. Hope there's good news all around by the end of the week! -

I emailed the financial aid office right after receiving the acceptance email about that and they haven't replied yet. But from the information I've gathered online, I believe I'm automatically disqualified from getting any scholarships or funding. I don't think there are assistantships for NYU grad students going for their MS degree either. I doubt I would have received anything even if I did apply before the deadline since I was accepted by the skin of my teeth. I just wish I didn't miss the deadline so at least I would have had some hope of maybe receiving in-house aid. I've started treating NYU as a rejection because of this issue :/ -

I'm really concerned about the money thing as well. I've only been accepted to NYU and their tuition terrifies me - I also submitted the FAFSA after their deadline too. I have no idea what I will do if I don't get accepted anywhere else. It's close to home so I'll definitely commute to cut costs but I might not attend altogether if I have to take out too much in loans -
Same! I roughly calculated that it'll be around 100k for me to attend since I need the pre-reqs too :/

Anyone admitted know anything about financial aid award/funding info?

Congrats to everyone who got accepted to MGH!!! Makes me happy to hear so many acceptances! Sort of unrelated but is there a reason why a lot of people here applied to similar schools? I feel pretty lonely waiting for my schools to release their decisions... -
Applying in 2014 without background
mystiqueSLP replied to phonology_rocks's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi, I'm an out-of-field applicant with no SLP pre-reqs. I looked around for programs that didn't need those pre-reqs to be admitted and can be completed as a grad student. The schools I applied to below are the ones that didn't need SLP pre-reqs for admission. Note: UNC-CH requires admitted students to complete undergrad pre-reqs (Bio, Chem, Psych, etc.) and 4 courses (Speech Science, Intro to Audiology, Normal Language Acquisition/Child Development, and Intro to Phonetics) before "graduate coursework" but they offer the Intro courses in the fall and Speech Science in the spring. I assumed Language Acquisition or Child Development would have to be taken beforehand. Good luck! -

It seems that TC starts notifying applicants around March 7th up until early April for both acceptions and rejections according to the results page so it might be a long month for us. -

I didn't apply for the STEPS program but has anyone heard from Indiana University at all? I see in the results page that people are getting accepted/waitlisted through postal mail but are rejections coming through postal or email? -

Just treat it as a formal interview, dress nicely and if things seem informal, then relax a bit. It sounds like they just want a sense of your personality. Good luck! -
I'm out of field and have no in field experience like observation hours or volunteering at speech clinics. But I have volunteered at a hospital for a lot of summers and been doing research at the psycholinguistics lab at my school. I also work at a tutoring center with a lot of kids that don't speak English as their first language and tutored a girl who was seeing an SLP and was mildly autistic. I used to teach young children French and Japanese and interned at a company that develops software for the army since I'm pretty handy with computers. I honestly don't know why I was accepted anywhere without real in field experience but I think it helps that this person is trilingual and they should definitely take advantage of that. During their year off, they should volunteer in clinic-like settings with adults and kids, figure out who they like to help and narrow it down from there. Find places that need Spanish speakers, they're in high demand so that would be a good for them. Work closely with an SLP or someone of a related field for good letters or get involved in a lab at school for research experience. Even if they want to do only clinical, I think it helps to have a different experiences. And do something they're really passionate about, something totally unrelated to SLP. I think that helps to set you apart from all the other applicants. Like captain of an ultimate Frisbee team or skydiving instructor or a dancer. Like anything different. SLP should be their passion but not their life. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me on this since I have an "outside" perspective, but I don't think adcoms want someone who does absolutely nothing but live and breathe SLP stuff 24/7. It's great that it shows your passion for SLP but it can't be your only passion... But this person should really figure out what they exactly want to do after graduate school. Work with kids or adults. Clinical or school setting. Language disorders or autism. Accent modification or stuttering. Knowing that will help guide the person know what they should get experience in.

Any specific reason why they didn't do so well in the beginning? I didn't do well for the first three semesters of college (2.0 ish GPA, failed a class, lost my scholarship) but I quickly switched majors and made it on the dean's list the very next semester, retook my failed class and got my scholarship back before junior year. Is this person motivated enough to work hard to get into a graduate program? Personally, I think upward trends are even better than people who get 4.0 out of the gate. Their transcripts tell a better story of their dedication and work ethic after all of the failure they've encountered (it was so hard for me to do well after failing a class and barely passing in my other classes, I was completely unmotivated and stressed out, my parents were unsupportive and thought I ruined my future). If this person has the work ethic and dedication to do better, then I say go for it but if they don't, a year off would be a wise choice. My current GPA is a 3.28 (very low by SLP standards) by the way and I was accepted into NYU so don't lose hope! Excel in other areas, get good recs and unique experiences.

I don't understand it either and was surprised to see it wasn't March like many other schools. The fine print on the website states to just estimate based on your previous tax form but I didn't have a job last year so the numbers are quite different now for me. It doesn't help that NYU is notorious for having a pricey tuition. -

I wonder if this happens a lot for NYU. I hope they make some exceptions for us! -

Thanks! I turned in my FAFSA yesterday and I really want to get in touch with them and see if it will be ok. At the very least, I hope for some federal loans. Superstorm Sandy affected me a bit - I sent in my NYU application at the last minute and I believe my official GRE scores got there after the deadline so I really hope they can make an exception because it's been financially hectic for me. -

I got into NYU!!! I just received an email this morning expecting a rejection and I see "Congratulations..." The bad news is that I missed the FAFSA deadline for NYU (February 2, so early!) but I really like NYU's program and if I don't get in anywhere else, I'll just have to make it work out with a lot of loans I suppose :/ -

I think it depends on how the school asks you about them in the application. Most ask for the best score for verbal, quantitative and analytical, some ask for the most recent. I just officially sent both scores (I took the GREs twice) and input whatever they wanted. Montclair isn't my top choice but it would be great if I got in. I hope we both get accepted! Good luck! -

Yup, I definitely explained the low GPA in my personal statement and one of my recommenders also mentioned it in his letters. And wow, I thought my GRE scores were really low since I couldn't find any comparison as to what is "good" since a lot of info is based on the old GRE scoring system so that's a relief! Good luck to you as well! Merci et félicitations!
