Hey there! So a ton of my deadlines were later (Jan and March) and I am absolutely dying. heard back from Texas A&M, but no others. I applied for MPH, MSPH, and MS. What did you apply for and at which school? And please let me know if you've heard back or not... trying to gage what's going on here. Thanks!

UNC is one of my top choices for that reason! My concentration was in hydrology and I've always been fascinated with water. and that's great advice about MPHs, nice to know they're so versatile! what was yours in? (or did you go for a different program all together)

yeah I'm running into that problem too not sure if it's because of the current budget stuff or if they simply don't have any openings anyway. Super frustrating. I did 2 years of ROTC and left before I had to sign my contract...just didn't feel ready to commit to serving for 7 years...now that I've had some time to think about it and research, I decided I really do want to go down the military road, at least for awhile. Don't know if I should hang on and wait another year to apply or if I should just go and do some other random job for awhile. I guess at the end of the day, it is really about what the air force/navy needs... just wish it lined up with what I want in terms of careers.

mmajum--thanks for the reply! In your experience, does an MPH set you up pretty well for a PhD? Or do most people who get an MPH kind of leave it at that and then go out into the real world? Also, what kinds of avenues does an MPH tend to open? I applied for MPH programs as well as MS and MSPH degrees. I thought it'd be good to get a lot of options, but my undergrad is a BS in Enviro Science. I don't particularly want to do ONLY research, because I really want to work outside of a lab and interact with people out in the real world. But, on the other hand... I love science so much. My entire life has been nothing but chemistry and environmental science. I know I probably sound like a geek, but I'm afraid of limiting myself if I pick one degree over the other.

sup stressed. I submitted SOPHAS too ( ) and I haven't heard back yet either. I went for the Jan 15 deadline (application submitted on the 14th, finally mailed on Feb 26).

Got my first acceptance (YAYY!!) to Texas A&M. I was just wondering if anyone here goes there currently/has been accepted there as well? It's not one of my top choices, but it looks like a great school and I'm trying to learn more about it.

7 Schools-- Johns Hopkins (top pick), UNC, Columbia, GWU, Michigan, Texas A&M, SUNY Albany. Kind of a combination of MPH/MSPH/MS degrees, depending on the school. I'm really interested in epi type stuff, as well as toxicology. Particularly as it relates to water (my undergrad was in enviro sci, hydrology), and I'd also love to look at at-risk populations to see what kinds of things they're exposed to and what might be done to mitigate those exposures. Absolutely no idea if I'll get in or not. Okay GPA and good GRE, but I'm biting my nails. My deadlines were late but I still haven't heard back from anywhere yet.

that...is completely awesome. sounds a lot like what I want to do. good for you!

Anyone out there either thinking about doing the military thing and grad school (or are you doing it already)? I'm hoping to get into the Navy's Health Sciences Scholarship program for environmental health and then go on active duty afterward. Air force is on the table too. seems like a great opportunity, jw if anyone else was going down that road

Oh SOPHAS. If I am ever born again and have to re-live my life, I'm filling out all my apps separately. With epi, are you looking at primarily at the spread of contagious diseases? how does it work when it's under enviro health?

I think it was something to do with the fact that the instructions weren't clear AT ALL on several important topics, and again the long processing time...also the fact that there was no nice college guidance counselor to run to with questions. flying solo on this one

have ppl heard MPH/MSPH/MS from many places? I actually called a bunch of my programs to see when they typically notify applicants because I was tired of watching all my friends get called away to interviews while I was twiddling my thumbs. Apparently a lot of my schools don't even notify until April. anyone else have this problem?
-
I was super excited when I saw it because I thought it would be less hassle and cheaper than filling out the individual applications. It was just as expensive and the fact several important instructions were unclear (like...where you're supposed to be sending transcripts and GRE scores) just made it more trouble than it was worth.

Anyone out there? have some really general questions about schools and whatnot haven't heard back from any schools yet but the lovely portal that is SOPHAS only just sent out my applications (*tears hair out*). But, let me know what you're going for (MPH, MS, PHD?) and what your thoughts are on schools.

oh! so glad to find other people hated it as much as me... I thought I was doing something wrong. A ton of my deadlines were early Feb, so I submitted the applications by Jan 14. SOPHAS literally just processed them a few days ago and finally "mailed" them out. I'm hoping the schools will accept them because they were submitted before the deadline...but serious pain in the butt.

Will I get into the Mailman School of Public Health?

hey! I applied to MPH at Columbia too. Honestly, my GPA took a bit of a hit as an undergrad (calc, yuck) so I wasn't sure about applying. But on their "prospective students" page, they said their average incoming GPA was 3.4! Of course I know averages can be skewed and blah blah blah, but it seemed encouraging. best of luck
