  1. March madness = waiting in misery for application decisions

  2. Maybe try contacting the admissions department about a decision or your department about a estimated date they'll let you know by. Push the fact that "you have other offers" and you just want to know so you can make a decision.
  3. OMG Gainsville is AMAZING!!!! bbq and mexican on every street. beautiful big campus!!! Love it there! I've been accepted and was given a grand tour before.

  7. Yes, I agree with this advice. I had an excellent project in undergrad, however due to my advisor running a big lab with a lot of students, she was very erratic in time management. I graduated last May and she has yet to meet with me and discuss how my manuscript is for submitting to be published. It is very unproductive to select a project if you see your advisor is not very enthusiastic or committed towards your research.
  8. Yes it's an interview! Just be yourself. Prepare. Read the POIs research publications, their interests. Focus on what you know and if you really want to go there, you'll know it during the interview.
  9. Also.. the hard sciences take longer to admit students. The official deadline of all grad application decisions is supposed to be early-mid April.
  10. I'm not sure. I'm going into the hard sciences just like you and I haven't dared emailing the POIs. I decided to email the graduate(s) student coordinator about a possible estimated date. She's a postdoc who organized the interview day and was in touch with the grad students afterwards. It doesn't hurt to ask. I think the worst thing they can do is ignore your email all together, therefore leading to thoughts of non-acceptance....
  11. How does anyone know what date their school plans to notify applicants?

Most people are using the results search tool on this site to make a prediction. It contains posts from students about their admissions status from previous years.

Some departments post the estimated notification date on their webpage. You can also email the program coordinator or secretary with your inquiry. The worst they can say is they don't know, which is unlikely. I got an estimated date of notification on all of my applications via email or on the department website.

Thank you!! I actually just sent an email asking for an estimated date since none was noted online.

  12. I've received a fellowship with funding before and you really would need to find out from them. My fellowship was science research related so it needed to be spent on tons of the supplies I really required. I have had several colleagues come to me and ask whether they could spend their money on a laptop. Even math majors were denied. However, a computer science IT fellow was able to upgrade his computer and get a new Mac. Hope this gives some insight. My honest opinion, that money will be directed towards travel, conference funds, conference attending fees.
  13. Just be yourself, but a vaguer self of you. I was honest when they asked. Because at the time, they were my only graduate program. I late applied to another just to be safer than not.
  14. Apply for REUs abroad and try attaining some internships in an area that you are passionate about!
  15. I'm reading Journey to the Centre of the Earth- Jules Verne and The Bible because I've been praying to get into graduate school. Heehee.
  16. They usually say so on their websites. I just applied past the deadline because I know no one has gotten any official decisions from that program. So I went ahead and applied late. I would contact the dept and as if they'll accept your late application. Good luck!
  17. currently waiting to hear back from programs.

  18. What do you mean by acceptance page? Of the school or of gradcafe? Do they post their acceptances?
  19. This is such a late reply but I haven't seen this until now. I have actually turned down two offers for funded graduate programs because the funding and the programs were not the right fit for me! The first, was a fully funded assistantship but at my undergraduate institution. Not a great choice if you would like to branch out like myself and not a good idea if you have taken everything your undergrad place has to offer! The second, I was accepted by the school, offered grant money but was warned that tuition may not be able to cover all semesters and may run out. Who would like to run into a big ol' trap like that while trying to get their graduate thesis work done on time and worry about their money running out? Decide what kind of graduate program you can deal with. For me, I made my decision by visiting, discussing with the faculty and understanding that all accepted students are fully funded. I left that campus knowing I have met the right fit for me.
  20. I applied to ODU. Haven't heard anything yet.
