I too am on multiple lists, one for a PhD Program and one for a masters program. Unlike you, I have no idea what my chances are on either since the directors claim the lists are unranked. Also unlike you, I have not been accepted anywhere, which has made for a very stressful last few weeks just waiting on pins and needles. The trick with waitlists is that you likely won't know if you got in off the waitlist until april 15th, which is the deadline for most people to accept offers at their respective programs and decline offers at yours. The catch being that if you already have an acceptance you will likely need to make a decision on or before april 15th, meaning that there is a very tight window for a school that has wailisted you to let you know you're in before you commit somewhere else. I hope this helps to clarify and doesn't just stress you out more.

hmmmm, I'm waitlisted for the UCLA IDP Archaeology program. The progam itself has been helpful and responsive, but the graduate division has been less so.

"Oh, you want to go to grad school. What for?" "Archaeology, eh? So whats your favorite dinosaur?" I. Do. Not. Study. Dinosaurs. but in all honesty, the stock "don't worry, you'll get in somewhere" is the worst. It just makes it sound so trivial and the presumptive nature of the statement makes the prospect of not getting in feel even worse. Sigh, april 15th is still so far away....

I hadn't recieved any word from two schools so I emailed the program reps inquiring about my status. They must have forwaded my email to the department chairs since within a day I recieved emails from the chairs of both programs. One told me that the school's website could only display an admitted or rejected status, but that I was officialy on the waitlist "for both admission and funding" and the other told me I was "currently on the list of alternates for admission." I'm not certain, but I guess those are both basically the same thing just with different names. Can anyone confirm that? I also haven't recieved any outright admission offers so I'm pretty much counting on one of the two programs accepting me, which is really streesing me out. Any ideas as to what my chances may be? How many people are on the waitlists? When I might hear? For a frame of refference, I'm applying to schools in a field of the humanities whose programs typically accept around five students a year. Thanks!
