  1. yes, it really does! Thanks everyone!
  2. I am in at Iowa. Presidential Fellowship nomination and five year funding. I would still consider Washington or Indiana if I get in, but Iowa was definitely a top choice
  3. thank you exposingfalsehoods. I would have been posting only sour grapes, so I refrained from saying anything, but you pretty much summed up my thoughts. Especially when the poster is brand new to the community, it does not come across nicely, in my opinion.
  4. My top choice was Princeton. I was not one of their top choices though. Now, I think my top choice is Iowa.
  5. That's where I am too, assuming they are all duds
  6. Starting to build the soundtrack If you want to have a bit of an attitude: Or if you are just wallowing in sadness
  7. Post your sadness here, grab a virtual drink, pick a virtual fight, whatever. I just got my first rejection. It really stings. Stupid Princeton.
  8. Got my big fat reject this morning
  9. Thanks. I have officially entered a funk. I am assuming I won't get in. It is absolutely my top choice and I don't even have a clear second choice. I should try to stay positive, but I just can't right now. But yes, I will keep fingers crossed for all of us who haven't heard yet.
  10. Nothing for me today. That might be it, huh?
  11. Haha Waldrop! Look at how similar our application list is Princeton is my top choice. I want to study religion. I have had a really positive connection with someone there, and my fingers are way crossed. The grad students are so intimidating though! It makes me think I will not get in.
  12. I was told that as well, but by a sociologist/department head (from a different school). She said that they take a ton of people and not all get funded. It is hard to get funding unless you have someone in the department really gunning for you, and it is easy to slip through the cracks unless you have a strong mentor relationship.
  13. I am forcing myself to turn off my computer and do other things. And I am trying really hard to not come here (or to facebook or any other chatty site) when I am online. very difficult. Based on the history of the results page, the earliest I can expect to hear back is mid Feb. Or later. Quite a few in late Feb or March.
  14. No interview here. But I had a really positive email discussion with a faculty member a few days before the deadline, so maybe he already thinks I am awesome and didn't need to talk to me anymore??
  15. This is why I didn't apply to any UC's. Berkeley was really high on my list, and I was eying Davis, Santa Barbara and San Diego as well. But I would be moving there with dependents, and our situation is alreay precarious, I didn't need to add that kind of stress. Really sucks though!
  16. YAY!! Congrats and thanks for passing along hope!
  17. The OP sure hopes so Thanks for recognizing the intent of the thread.
  18. Dude, I am at the dance in my dorkiest dress and I am totally going to make the best of it! Maybe I will spike the punch.
  19. Holy shit Astro!! OMG! CONGRATS!! I was feeling so bad for you yesterday, reading your update, thinking about the fact that you started this thread and you got a rejection. YAY!! Is that a top choice for you? I am still in limbo. According to years past, I still have a couple of weeks before I hear anything. I think the stress will kill me by then because now that others are getting in, I assume that means that I won't.
  20. OOH! Someone added Wisconsin! Congrats!
  21. Woohoo! Congrats! Those are some heavy-hitter schools!
  22. I'm with you ddlr. Thursday I got an email from a college. Heart stopping! Oh, they don't have a copy of my writing sample. (Even though I attached it to the application) Today I got a letter from another school! YAY! This is to confirm that we have all pieces of your application. sigh
  23. But why does someone have to be clever about it? How is it any different: X just found out she is having a baby! X has met the love of her life X is getting married! Little baby Y is here! X has bought her dream house! X has landed the most awesome job. I am seriously still befuddled how getting into the school of your dreams doesn't rank up there with other absolutely want to share events. Now in every one of those cases, someone could feel bad. People struggling with infertility or going through a divorce or loss of a spouse might feel bad about some. Someone who is unemployed or poor might feel bad about others. But I don't think that people should just not share news because it might hurt someone. In fact, often the person who might be hurt ends up being hurt because you don't share that with them.
  24. But they are going to notice you are going to that school and working on your degree. It isn't like it can stay hidden forever. Plus, the whole thing from application to tenure is such a long slow horrible grind. Why wouldn't we want to stop and celebrate our happy points along the way?
