Risky Business? With Honors Good Will Hunting And the really horrible one with Nick Cage about the end times?? I can't remember the name, just that I disliked it very much. Other people loved it though.
-
I know. This is stupid but I got into one school and I will be completely happy to go there. But I keep thinking, "Gee, I hope I didn't get into only one school"
-
I asked that specifically rogue and I was told that is everyone. It is a pretty small program with 35-40 total grad students and their rate for students not finishing is high, so that seems representative to me.
-
I don't know of any, but it seems like some should??
-
It is definitely under 50. On my first round, I got a 410 which was something like 14th. I boosted it to 590 which was I think 48th. Coya!! Where else did you get in. Man, after giving us such a wonderful picture of you life during the application process, don't leave us hanging now! We want to celebrate your successes

There are definitely people who come in from non-sociology backgrounds. And you have a good chunk of research, even if it isn't in the field. Are all deadlines for master's really gone? What about for Spring?
-
That is what she said. And she said that she had just crunched these numbers recently for some type of review. Here is what they have on their website: http://www.uiowa.edu/~soc/graduate/placement.html

Two because you get really big sleeves BUT!! Do some research into the politics of the school, make sure there is no talk of any uprising! I mean, what if yo pin your hopes and dreams on that beautiful gown and then the school changes to something completely non-bad ass? Oh, wait, I think you should negotiate and ask for a clause in your contract that allows you to transfer to the other school if the first school goes with a different look. But seriously! Let's talk about the important qualifiers. Which one is closer to a beach?

I was talking to the DGS at Iowa the other day and she told me that 100% of their graduates get jobs in TT or research. 89% get TT positions. So that is promising. It isn't a super-high ranking school either. But they do teach how to teach as well as how to research. And placements don't tend to be in upper tier schools.

Roll Right, why do you say this: Pew Research Center (good luck with that) ?? What are they looking for?
-
Hey, congrats back at ya! Is it a top choice for you? I haven't decided if I am going to go visit or not, since I will have to pay some out of pocket for it.

OMG that is horrible. I clicked on the link and it looks very much like you were accepted because, well, it says, Congratulations on your acceptance! Is it really so hard to email this out: Thank you for applying to our Graduate School for the 2010-11 academic year. While I assure you that the materials you submitted were carefully reviewed by the faculty in the Department of Sociology, I regret to inform you that the department did not recommend your admission for the coming year. Blah blah blah blah?

I know it is a lonely place out there on the prairie, but anyone else apply? It is pretty much my top choice at this point.

One of my recommenders is a department head at another school, but got her PhD at Washington years ago. She still works with people from there. She has told me on more than one occasion that UW is heavily quantitative, and that it is Science with a capital S! I met with a dean from another school and he also stressed that Washington leans heavily on the quant side. This just came up in conversation, when he was using UW as a comparison to another school.

I grew up near Chicago. I remember standing outside waiting for the bus in 10 degree weather. I hate the cold but may well be moving to Iowa. Yes, layers are the key. They are amazing! Wool is good. And really gloves. A couple of pairs of socks with at least one layer being thick wool. And wear a hat or a hood and a scarf. Those little things make such a difference! Public transportation is doable in the winter. And sometimes it is safer!

got my big reject letter from them today. I am actually okay with this, because I wasn't in love with their program and now I don't have to feel bad about choosing a lower ranked program that I like better.
-
Thanks and same back at ya coya! I miss you around here!

When are folks planning to move? If we are going someplace where we will be living off campus, I wonder if it is a better idea to move in June or July, when housing selection might be better?
-
Anyone else still waiting?
-
I haven't gotten anything one way or the other. It seems like their department is pretty big, so they might not have notified everyone yet.
-
I applied and have heard nothing yet. I have a feeling I am not sciencey and quantitative enough for them. I live in WA and don't want to leave, so I am anxious to hear back!

Yay!! My people! I will be 39 in a couple of weeks. My husband is 42. We didn't make great choices when we were younger. So we are now in our cusp-of-40 years, both in school, with three kids 8-13. My hubby will have one more year of school and we are all excited about the move. But, yes, I have definitely been researching school districts as well. And the family has put a lot of cities right out of the running due to expense or commute time. If I didn't have so many extras, I would have considered CA schools, but in our situation, it is too scary. I applied to Princeton and was broken hearted when I got the rejection, but later I reminded myself that my hope had been to get rejected, since it would be such a tough place for my family to live, between the high cost of living, and the pressure cooker atmosphere of the high school.

I know, I know. I am sure that helped me see what a jerk I was being But I like to believe I would have seen that regardless. It just might have taken me a little while longer. lol
-
Aw thanks everyone. And especially jacib! Yes, it feels so awesome! I don't even want to think of the next round. Right now it means I am going to graduate school!! WOOHOOO!!! I am not interested in social psych, I know that is their big focus. My focus is on conservative Christianity, and Jennifer Glass is there. Jennifer Glanville also has done work in my field of interest.

Oh geez, no I am the one who should be apologizing to you! I said I hadn't posted because I would be posting sour grapes, and then I did it anyway! I am sorry for being so snarky and not welcoming you to the community. Your questions are legitimate and I am sorry to have let my own jealousies get in the way.
