  1. Hey guys, I didn't see a Fall 2014 thread yet for sociology! Thought we could start one. Who is starting to prepare for applications? Have you taken the GRE yet? Where are you feeling stuck? For me - I am starting a GRE prep 8-week class next week and am working on SOP, personal history essay, and trying to figure out what UCDavis is looking for with regard to the "prior experience essay" - I assume prior research experience, but I can't be certain. Schools on my list: Univ. of Cali - Davis, San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, Santa Barbara North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Duke, North Carolina State Univ. Ohio - Ohio State Univ. Maryland - Univ. of Maryland College Park, John's Hopkins What about all of you?
  2. UCDavis asks for: statement of purpose, personal history statement (both 4000 character limit), and a prior experience essay (2000 character limit). Does anyone know what they would be looking for in the prior experience essay (does a CV/resume suffice?)? Most Sociology programs are asking for only a statement of purpose (and not the other two). Thanks for the help!
  3. Hello! I will be applying to graduate programs this Fall and my boss said she would definitely write a letter for me. I have two close professors for the other two letters. I've worked in a corporate environment for over 13 years so a letter from "work" is most likely necessary. However, my concern is - I'm applying to roughly ten programs (need to apply broadly to better align the same city for my husband's post-doc job) and I'm concerned that she is way too busy to login to 10 different websites to submit her recommendation. Has anyone had this issue? Is it even an issue? Any advice on this?
  4. Hey! I'm applying for Fall 2014 as well. I am about to start a GRE test prep course to get me ready for that! I'm going to apply broadly - UNChapel Hill, Duke, NC State Univ and then Univ. of California LA, Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara. My last choices are staying in Ohio and/or going to Maryland. I just graduated with undergrad, but am a full-time working adult. I cannot wait to be ONLY in the academia world and out of the corp world.
  5. Hello! I'm applying to these areas and wanted to see what apartment options there are close to campus - if anyone lives close to any of these? What's it like? Is it safe? etc. Anything you know about these areas would be great! Thank you! Leslie
