  1. LOL. I've applied to ten! Want to have a few to choose from where my husband can also get a postdoc in his field! Here's my lengthy list: North Carolina State University (my first choice!), Univ. of Oklahoma Norman, UT Austin, Univ. of Maryland College Park, Rice, and then UC-San Diego, Santa Cruz, Riverside, and San Francisco.
  2. Glad to see I'm not alone! I wondered if being 36 would be a negative on my applications. I've applied to ten programs in the hopes of having a couple to choose from where my husband has postdoc opportunities in his field. This waiting period is not easy!!!!!!!
  3. How do grad students afford the high rent around UCSD?
  4. What schools are you referring to...
  5. Where are you attending cultsoc?
  6. Those are pretty great scores really!
  7. Do you know for sure that he celebrates Christmas? Perhaps a holiday card would be better if you're unsure. And only wine if you're sure he drinks wine...
  8. @blasian I am wondering this myself!! Good question....
  9. Hi @meowth! It sounds a lot like the recruitment event I went to in October at NCSU. We had a full two day agenda where we listened to faculty panels, graduate student panels, were able to ask questions, and we toured the building where we would be researching if we're accepted. Definitely email any faculty who you're interested in working with and try to schedule a couple of minutes to introduce yourself and ask about their current projects. Good luck!!
  10. Hi Lvyez! Just to add to what Moyru said, I was told that the GRE is more verbal focused and the GMAT is more quant focused. Not sure if that helps! Good luck!
  11. Hi LatteArt! I also applied to NC State, it's my first choice! I attended their recruitment event in October and they said that scores are not the end all (thank goodness because mine stink!). They said that if you only have one thing (like scores) that are "low" and you have everything else great, then you are fine. Their new food and environment specialty sounds great! I am interested in their inequality specialty. Good luck!!! Maybe we'll be researching together! Leslie
  12. Makes sense, thank you for the thoughts! I've applied to ten programs in cities where my husband can apply for a postdoc job in his field; once I know where I've been accepted, then he'll start applying! Little juggling act...
  13. Once we receive acceptance notifications (fingers crossed), does anyone know how long schools usually give for an answer? I was thinking I'd have until May to give them an acceptance or denial?
  14. Other disciplines have this thread and it's very useful! Anyone hear back yet from your applications for Sociology?
  15. LOL @NoTransitory. I concur. Well, if work were busy right now, that would help things!
  16. @SocGirl2013 - glad you started the thread! Just sitting around and waiting for my recommenders to put their letters in! Waiting is the worst! I've submitted ten applications...waiting...waiting...waiting...
  17. You could also check out North Carolina State University. They just started that specialty in the soc department this year.
  18. Hello! I'm also applying while working full-time. It is not easy! I'm attending a visitation event next week and have to take 3 days vacation. However, I told my immediate manager last fall of my intentions because I needed her help in having an altered work schedule earlier this year so I could finish my B.S. and an independent study research project. So my manager knows and I just told the person that I support about my plans and he was very supportive and excited for me. Hopefully it will go as planned and they will not "eliminate" my position before next summer!!!
  19. And I agree with Lisa - applying to a wide ranging (on the ranking list) is a good idea anyway!!
  20. @JJF10 - your CV sounds great; your GPA is not bad nor are your GRE scores. You could email the programs to see if they feel you are competitive enough, but it sounds like you are and you should apply to where you want to go! If it doesn't work out this year, you can re-apply next year!
  21. Question about a commute - I'm considering Riverside and my husband will be working in or around LA - is it even possible to live in the middle of these two locations w/o both of us having a horrendous commute?? Thanks for the advice.
  22. Hi @quicksilver; I'm currently finishing up an 8-week Kaplan prep course. Their online resources, like the full-length practice tests, are very helpful! The classes though are fast-paced. Unfortunately my prelim numbers are wretched!!!!!!!!!!! Not representative of my capabilities! Which only makes me have a perpetual eye twitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, went on a tangent- the courses are very expensive, but since it's been a long time since high school, the courses and practice material are definitely helpful.
  23. @currentgrad - that totally just made my day!
  24. LOL @gilmoregirl! I agree!! I am not looking forward to that waiting period either, but I know we will all be soooooo glad to be done with GRE, and applications!!!! I'm wondering how it will be for me with working full-time and applying at the same time! We shall see! Good luck to you and @sarahcharlie and @2x!!!! Exciting stuff.
  25. Starbucks medium blend + cream brulee creamer + whipped steam milk to create foam on top = AMAZING!
