I got mine two days ago. I'm assuming I will get a poor funding offer, and if thats the case I won't be attending.

Quick question, who should I email my funding request to? The dean, the financial aid department, both? funding for the MTS as far as I know is 22% unless you get the Petry full ride scholarship of which there are 4 I believe. You can call them and ask if you got that scholarship.

^I'm in at Duke but no letter yet (I finally got up the courage to call them once I head from Harvard). Speaking of Harvard, do you guys think it bad form to name the other schools I got into and funding offers (Vandys should basically be a full ride) when asking for more funding? Attending really wont be feasible unless I get more so there is a lot riding on it.

I know there are other topics about this, but they all seem like they're for PhD's or terminal degrees. This is for a Masters in Theological Studies, it's a non-terminal degree, my stats are all below. Basically I got into every place with some funding, but none fully funded. My top choice is Harvard, and I really have to have more funding for it to be feasible given how much their tuition is in addition to the cost of living in Boston. The reason I would name the schools is because there are probably 10,000 tiny divinity schools which would make saying "I have offers from other schools" not as meaningful as if I say 3 of the top programs in the country....does that make sense? I never planned on having to ask for more funding, I didn't anticipate all the offers being so evenly metiocrely matched, and the one program guaranteeing full funding rejected me. I can't imagine a worse outcome to being accepted into 4 or 5 of the best programs in the country and still not being able to attend. How do I go about the process of asking? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I know this is done at the PhD level, but is it possible to get a Masters program to give you better funding if you tell them another program has made you a better offer? Basically, I got into Vanderbilt with a bigger scholarship than Harvard, but I would like to go to Harvard more. I know Harvard isn't exactly strapped for cash...and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be taking away aid for anyone else. I would say something to the effect of them being my number one choice but another school has offered me more funding, and that I would also look for outside funding sources but would think it might not be feasible for me to attend without a little more financial aid.

I got into Harvard!!!!! I can't believe it I'm so happy!

not a single one? oudeis indeed.

Yale decisions are online. I got waitlisted. Doesn't give me much hope for Harvard who seem even more selective

So apparently I'm behind the times, and Obama passed some bill last year establishing income based repayment. Since I functionally have an AGI of $0, I don't have to pay any of my loans right now. I called up loan holders and began to set this up, however I ran into something peculiar when I called up my Perkin's loan company. They told me that they don't do income based repayment... I was under the impression that it was a law that was passed, and that they don't have the option to not do it. Are they trying to swindle me like every other loan company because they know it will decrease my payment, or can they actually opt out of the income based repayment?

I wish I knew they were calling. The number I provided was my grandparents who dont have an answering machine and I spent the entire day in the hospital with my grandpa so I have no way of knowing if they called. I'm too chicken to call them up and ask. I just got a n email from Candler offering me a merit scholarship award of even less than the minimum advertised on the website, so I'm a bit discouraged.

Wait, how did you already hear from duke about the MTS? as far as the funding goes, essentially consider yourself applying for one of 5-6 spots which offer full tuition scholarships. The rest give you like 33% funding.
-
Just got a rejection from ND as well, but it was expected. They required all the weakest parts of my application (GRE, pithy SOP) without allowing me to submit the strong parts (writing sample, extra recs from Bible profs, an autobiographical statement).
-
how were you notified if you don't mind my asking? I heard of someone else hearing back about their MDiv app so I called and they said not to expect my answer until like the 15th. I'm an MTS but I don't understand why there would be a difference.
-
my stats are below. accepted to emory and vanderbilt for mts so far.
-
I forgot to mention I guess that this is only for a Master's not a PhD.

like redreverend said, it will definitely help you if you get a good score. I'm not really an expert, but I think I would disagree with your assessment that telling them you've read piles of books from amazon on religion won't help you. I would say pretty much like you have that you majored in engineering but have been devouring theology or biblical studies books in your free time and mention the authors and topics that interest you most to prove that you are competent in those subject areas. Most MDiv degrees intentionally cater to people without a strong background in theology anyway, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I'm 2 for 2 so far on my acceptances, and one sent financial aid info along with my acceptance letter offering a merit-based 65% tuition scholarship which I was sure pleased with. Then I remembered way back in undergrad I found out the government aid at the same time as the institutional aid, so I knew what kind of overall package I had. It seems that I won't hear back on the government aid for at least a couple weeks, so I'm wondering if there are any pretty standard grants that come along with the FAFSA so I can begin planning. If it matters, my total income on my tax return this past year was 0, I'm independent, and I'm applying to universities in several states none of which are my home state.
-
I'm assuming you guys are talking about the PhD, but I'm wonding if that applies to the Master's as well. Since I was notified Monday at noon and I know others are still waiting for notification, would that be any indication that I'm in for a substantial financial aid package?
-
yep that's the place, any word yet?

See below My main interest is Second Temple, so late OT, intertestimental stuff, and NT I considered applying to Brite because of Leo Perdue, but I decided (possibly incorrectly), that Brite wouldn't have the reputation to get me into a top PhD program or a career after my Master's

Just called them up, and there were about 100 applicants for the MTS. The financial aid decisions will be sent out the first week in March for those wondering.
-
Harvard is probably my top choice at this point, so I am eager to hear their decision, but knowing that they don't notify until March 15 I'm not twisted into knots just yet. Hearing I was accepted to Candler helped ease a lot of my nervousness.

MTS in the Biblical Studies concentration Btw, does anyone know how many applicants there were for the MTS or MDiv? The website says there are 62 MTS students which means about 30 spots per year, I wonder how many apply.
-
I can't believe they already reviewed my app (7 page writing sample, 4 page autobiographical statement, 3 page plan of study, resume, 4 or 5 rec letters each with an extra form to accompany them) submitted barely a week ago now, but they did, and I'm in! I didn't have my decision even one hour ago, but I hit refresh and there it was! Give it a try!

I'm in a bit of a different situation it seems, I'm Facebook friends with 3 out of my 5 reference writers. I don't know what the proper etiquette is in this case. Should I send them all a person email to tell them I got in and thank them again before I post it to Facebook?
