hds is increasingly becoming the womens studies in religion program, unfortunately. I can't really think of any female professor that shouldnt be able to field those type of questions honestly. It really depends on the questions though, and since I don't know what they are, unless they are very brief or specific to a professors work I would suggest emailing the student contacts hds offers. they are probably the closest to an admission officer.

Thanks, good to know I'm not crazy again. I'm guessing you were helping with Luke? I was approached about that but had heard many a grad student had martyred themselves on it.

Dear Windfish, I'm glad to hear your enthusiasm. Others have done a great job of offering you direction so I'll offer an encouragement. I hope you will not do ministry instead of medicine, but use them together. I often feel like I did more good for the world when I was doing simple manual labor I did volunteering various places than the esoterica I deal with daily in scholarship. I never gave any thought to becoming a missionary until less than a year before I was on the other side of the planet, and I admit I'm still a bit uncomfortable with the appellation for what it conveys to some people. But, a doctor with an MDiv is essentially the perfect missionary. If you haven't considered using your talents for the less fortunate abroad, I hope it will be something you ruminate on.

I spoke to someone in the ATS the other day. Apparently members have to be invited by other members and approved by the board of ATS. The membership is limited to 100, all(?) of whom are Christian.

HDS requires 1.5 years of a single language for MDivs, and intermediate proficiency as demonstrated by 2 years coursework or a pass on an exam of a single language for MTS Unfortunately, because doctoral work in religion is so specialized you can decide between one or the other before beginning a PhD, as long as you have a good count of other relevant languages under your belt. Of the two New Testament PhD's here I know well enough, neither had taken Hebrew before beginning the PhD. They did have nearly a decade of Greek, Latin, Coptic, German, etc. though. For Hebrew Bible to not have Greek would be a much bigger knock against you, but if you did, say, Akkadian instead, it probably wouldn't be held against you.

thanks a bunch!

I struck out on my PhD apps this year and I need to remain active in the academy until I reapply in the Fall, lest my CV be destroyed. Ideally I would like to stay in the area, at least someplace commutable from Cambridge, MA area. My Master's is from Harvard, which I would think would get my foot in the door, but it seems like this city is over-saturated with overqualified PhD's scooping up the adjunct positions. My field is religion, specifically ancient Judaisms and Christianities. Should I just start cold calling places?

technology question for those studying in religion
11Q13 replied to anthrovagabond's topic in Religion
1. If you're coming to Harvard you will have to get an iPad with a posh keyboard accessory. But seriously...you don't want to write essays on a netbook, you need a full sized keyboard. The HDS campus is not that big. 2. There is no such thing as text critical scholarship of the Quran, everyone is afraid to do it, so there's nothing like this that I'm aware of. That said, here is an upcoming text critical project on the Koran, the Corpus Coranicum, by the Germans who are not afraid of anyone. Not like logos or bibleworks, but the closest there is right now that I know of. http://koran.bbaw.de/ If you're coming to HDS you might shoot an email to Dean Graham about this. -
I've noticed people including membership to this society on their CV, but google only returns results for a "midwest division." Some secondary sources are saying it's the oldest theological association in America and yet I can't find a darn website for the thing... help?

technology question for those studying in religion
11Q13 replied to anthrovagabond's topic in Religion
Regarding programs like logos and bibleworks, I can only speak about logos since that's what I have, but any library worth anything will have whatever resources the programs have. What the programs are good at however are languages. They can do tons of stuff that only computer software can do. So if you're planning to work in two or three foreign languages you might consider getting a language package. Wait for the sales though, and see if your school can get you the 50% discount, otherwise you can get a 30% student discount. -
excellent thread, will read again

Friend of mine got into the NT+EC, she has another offer she is considering though. I also corresponded with the admissions officer, and they said if you weren't interviewed you probably aren't on a waitlist.- 348 replies

Any inside scoop on the CJA admits? I feel like if it's not going to happen, Harvard and Notre Dame just need to administer the coup de grace already. This has been weighing on me long enough.- 348 replies

How do you know you want to go into Academia?
11Q13 replied to Final_countdown321's topic in Religion
I needed to put an academic gloss on my ingrained convictions, and the field of religion is ideal for those who enjoy being simultaneously irrelevant and sanctimonious. -
wow this brings back memories... PMed you

First thing I would do is call them up and find out if it's possible for an MTS student to switch to MDiv after they've begun. It's really simple to do here at Harvard so I would wonder the same for Duke. If you do get rejected, then yeah, don't think it would hurt to apply to the MDiv, they may not even remember your MTS app...
