Thanks, I haven't given up hope yet. "By the skin of my teeth" has described most of my life, so I don't why I would think this would be any different!

Perhaps people are bashful about posting because they don't want to be identified, after all there were only a few of us. I've been rather bad at remaining anonymous on here. After compulsively checking my phone every 30 seconds yesterday, I didn't get a call either. I finally got an email this morning...second on the waitlist...UGGG Frankly, I was expecting (and having dreams about) outright rejection, so this is kind of a consolation. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the likelihood 2 people offered admission (there were four offers right?) and/or the one person ahead of me on the waitlist will go elsewhere? Edit: I'll just put in my plea here, if you were admitted or waitlisted and are going someplace else, please notify them soon!

Is anyone rejected from Claremont? It's been my impression that it's not a competitive admission system.
-
I know the NELC admits were contacted a little while ago already, so I'm assuming the Committee for the Study of Religion PhD

I swear I am going crazy refreshing this page and my email. Earlier in the semester when I was writing lectures all day I was fine...but now, uggg. I'm assuming I didn't get in to UT Austin, which is a shame because I felt like I would fit well, and I'm guessing if I don't hear from Toronto in the next several hours I didn't get in there either. Toronto was the last big school that I would be chomping at the bit to go to. On top of all of this I'm waiting to hear back from the Fulbright, which might not happen for several weeks yet!!! /rant

A schools total endowment is irrelevant for your funding, because it depends on how it's allocated. Mention you have other offers, mention that the other offers are more (if it's true), mention that you would like to attend their program but funding is an issue, ask if they are able to increase the funding award, be grateful and thankful for the award given to you, ask with as much finesse as you can, don't mention the names of the other schools unless asked, don't mention any dollar amounts unless asked. Some schools will increase your offer (eg. Vanderbilt), others will not (eg. Harvard).

I had a good time, but it made me realize how slim my chances actually are. There are, I believe, twelve people for four spots, which is already bad odds. But, three are internal applicants, who typically do very well in getting into the PhD. So it feels more like one or two people for nine spots, which is even worse odds. I'm sure there were at least that many with stronger profiles than me.

Congrats!

email. I received it literally moments after I made the above post, so I just edited it in.

officially rejected from Harvard ThD last night and Brown and Princeton this morning
-
It looks really interesting, I just don't have a clue what was going on in that chart...
-
Actually, maybe that is why. I'm pretty sure at least one has no waitlist... Yep...I'm teaching today

"There seems to be a legit UT acceptance. Congrats to whoever it is! Has anyone else heard anything?"

Anyone know about when Germany will give it's final decisions? I have a couple PhD programs waiting on me now

A word of friendly advice if any of you are admitted to the Vanderbilt MTS. It may be worth your while to request more funding than the initial offer. -
Congrats!!! Did you tell them to tell the PhD committee to go suck lemons on behalf of the rejected applicants from the gradcafe?

In my experience there was a palpable schism between the "Boston girls" and the women associated with Harvard (don't know if it would be true for the other universities like BC, BU), alas, the former weren't interested in/impressed with us intellectuals...perhaps a phenomenon related to growing up with Harvard in your back yard. Boston is a fun city, though. Yeah as I mentioned, I'm still sorting out those details. I've only received the one offer email from BC with few details, but Michigan is essentially throwing money at me for travel and summer funding, so that aspect is at least relevant to this quality of life issue, which is what I'm getting at I guess.

So, just bouncing ideas off you smart folks... Apart from the academic side of things, which I'm also hammering out, I'm trying to weigh my options in terms of where I'd like to be with social/family life during and at the end of my doctoral program If you were a single, relatively young guy, probably looking to start a family hopefully before this decade ends, who is about to begin a doctoral program where you would be stuck for 5 or 6 years, would you rather: Be in an expensive, big, fairly youthful, exciting city with lots to do, where you will have to live modestly and rent a room in an apartment you'd share with three other people (presumably strangers) or Be in a smaller, university town, live modestly perhaps, but modestly after having enough money to buy a small home and/or car with your stipend...

Was just notified via email that I've been accepted to Boston College PhD (Biblical Studies track)! ...was a bit odd that this was done via email rather than phone, skype, or snail mail. Looks like I'll have some serious choices to make pretty soon.
-
I'd like to teach Bible, early Christianity/Judaism at a top Christian college or seminary. Some place where I could do research, get travel grants, tenure, and where I could expect my students to be interested, engaging, and get better than a 70% average on their midterm.
-
That is higher, but considering the cost of living is probably twice as high as most places, that stipend is actually not that great.
-
same adcomm, so both
-
It would be the resources of Harvard, the combined faculties of Notre Dame, the Harvard Divinity faculty of the ~1970-90s (before Stendahl retired, after Levenson joined, if there actually was any overlap), Princeton Seminary in the Metzger era, and be located on the campus of UC Berkeley (along with Danny Boyarin)...and throw in EP Sanders for good measure. ...a bit more dreamy than you were probably looking for
-
Yeah, I guess it's that anything other than Harvard, isn't Harvard. Even though I'll probably be much happier in a different program and other places are doing things more related to my interests there is the perception, which I've apparently internalized, that any place else is not as good.
-
I didn't get in to Harvard, I only know because I'm on the inside so to speak. For some reason, I'm rather broken up about it... first world problem maybe?
