  1. This is correct! Drop in American was mostly due to the loss of Cox and McCubbins (professor's citations are a big driver of rankings).

But on the other hand, we have some young, promising professors coming in. Victor Shih, Jesse Driscoll and Molly Roberts. It is fair to claim UCSD would keep its current overall ranking for another decade.

  2. My strategy is to look at the overall ranking instead and then consider faculty fit. I don't believe in sub-field ranking. MIT in the last four years has accomplished a significant upgrade in their training, but its methods ranking did not move in 2013. The CP ranking seems to make a little more sense for UCSD, as they lost Matthew Shuggart and Gary Cox. However, I do not do standard democratic politics (e.g. legislature, democratic voting, public opinion, bureaucracy, etc.), except when it comes to the recent literature on informal institutions and institutional change. Therefore, their departure did not affect me.

    Shuggart is a fantastic professor.

  3. I'm not quite sure, though! Non-resident tuition waiver still leaves 12000 in resident tuition and fees, in the worst case scenario (+health insurance). We really need answers! Sucks that they released decisions on Friday... ;-)

Most resident tuition and fees can actually be covered by RA/TA (if above 25 percent i guess), which is standard UCSD policy. Don't worry too much about it pal.

But sure, we still need to contact the department for clarification on our offer.

  4. I don't know whether it's realistic for me to think like this, but I'm hoping either that UCSD doesn't completely rule out funding non-resident international students beyond the second year (my letter does not mention anything about international students unable to become California residents and I think we all got the same letter), or that there is room for negotiation before we accept/reject its offer.

    check this.

I would say we have one year to worry about (if we obtain candidacy at the end of 2nd year.)

  5. If anyone can provide an answer.

Someone posted UCSD rejection recently, labeling the program as Political Science and International Affairs.

Is this different from the regular poli sci program?

it is the joint PhD program (PolSci Department and IR/PS).

If you want to get into the joint program, you must first be admitted by the PolSci Department.

  6. I thought Rochester's waitlist email has a quite positive nuance to it.

Rochester mentions funding, so I thought that was a rather positive sign, but hard to tell without any frame of reference.

How would you say the letters compare, NYU and Rochester?

Of course, Rochester is much more positive.

I have two friends admitted to Rochester but they are not likely to accept it for better fit in other programs. In this case, I would say the odds is on our side.

  7. My post has now been buried but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded here and who sent me PMs encouraging me not to lose hope or think poorly of myself during this process.  Just knowing other people relate to what I am going through is a huge comfort.

On that note, I too got the official Berkeley rejection e-mail today :(.

It is still very early. Many people, like me, get no offer so far but we are going to fighting through this together.

  8. anyone who applied Rochester would like to tell me how to update the status?

I mean, when I log in, in the page

    "

    Application Status for Steedyue
ASE Fall 2014 Political Science PhD

    "

    I see nothing.

no offer, no rejection, no update.

    no way man another waitinglist?

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT
