  1. pulpandink, berto, a first year student at UW-Madison, recently posted on the thread about being a parent and doing an mfa. You could try PMing him if he doesn't see this.
  2. I think it is great that you applied anyway. I think most of us are similarly conflicted (to varying degrees) and have some mental version of "there is no way they'll pick me" accompanied by "I hope they like me." Not so lame. We'll all get through this ok...that's a big part of why I am on this forum. ismewilde: I was thinking about Skowhegan, but decided against it, for this year, because of the time commitment.
  3. Agreed. I don't want to get too emotionally invested in any one program, UCLA or otherwise—all are very competitive. I would be happy with any of them.
  4. Hi Bandito. I applied to UCSD, UCLA, CalArts, USC, Bard and UBC (in Canada). I had the same experience at UCLA...I visited twice and talked to different people each time and only heard good things. The folks at USC were also pretty happy with their program.
  5. Oh no, so sorry to hear that Kelly! Good luck to everyone who applied to Yale! Sounds like you might start to get some news on Friday, then.
  6. "For UCLA I chose sculpture. All I really had to go off of was the bit on the website where ID described itself as being about "site- and debate-specific forms of institutional critique," which doesn't really sound like what I do. Maybe I should have done more research, though." No, you probably made the right decision then; it is a very specific program.
  7. Great that your interview went well, soapeater. Nice to have one under your belt. Hi artsyfartsy! good luck!
  8. Hi mazipanned, Did you apply to ID or sculpture for UCLA?
  9. Hi ismewilde, welcome and good luck! I encourage everyone who has not signed on and said hello...to do so. The more the merrier!
  10. Yay interviews! Congrats.
  11. That sucks. Do they really need official ones that fast?
  12. That sounds right.
  13. Sorry, I missed this post earlier--you may have solved this problem already. I applied to Bard and USC--I did not have this problem. If you haven't already called the schools and sorted this out...I would. I don't think it is an insurmountable problem.
  14. I don't think it is too forward, it would be kinda weird if you were there and didn't make contact. If you are already rejected...well, it would be good to know. I don't expect to begin hearing from the schools I applied to for at least 3 weeks, so I'm trying not to think about it too much.
  15. lomarch and marzipanned, That's great! Please let us know how the interviews go.
  16. Congrats pulpandink! So great to get early results!
  17. I think that some people viewing work are just not that interested in reading, even if they are going to interview you. Some people are readers and others are not...regardless of whether you (we) think they should be. They also have to wade through a lot of bad artist writing...if they've been doing it for years, they develop strategies which can include ignoring as much of the writing as possible. That's one reason why the presentation of the portfolio is so important.
  18. I had to resend requests a number of times, because recommenders either didn't get them or couldn't find them. I just assumed it had something to do with SPAM filters. It happened with systems other than slideroom as well. No problem with actual recommendation submissions though.
  19. Of course! There's that too!
  20. Whose making the rules?! Do what ever you want. It is not uncommon for people have multiple graduate degrees in different disciplines, and I have even heard of two MFA's. As the Op said—in different disciplines...areas with their own specialized knowledge and approach. However, If the disciplines are more similar, a person would be more likely to do a practice PHD.
  21. well...good luck Kelly!...and let us know how it goes.
  22. Although I have not followed your dramatic life and application cycle, It seems like the adcom might be wanting to see that you have drafting skills that are useful for impromtu communications with others on the job? If this sounds right, I would focus on something like construction details, or quick conceptual /schematic sketches of a stage set. Image yourself in conversation with someone trying to get a visual point across. I would keep it all loose and informal, make a lot of them and then choose the best ones to show.
  23. I believe it is a form, but if you do it all online (as they "strongly" recommend) they send everything directly to the recommenders and you don't have to worry about anything else—except, of course, to make sure your recommenders follow through :-)
  24. Congratulations all around! Great to hear responses coming in. Good Luck with the interviews.
  25. That's exciting! Congrats!
