  1. Okay, I'm going to be heading down to Gainesville in the fall. I know almost nothing about the place except that I loved it when I visited. I'm a single male in my early 20's, and while I value my social life,I am by no means a party animal. I'm looking for an apartment complex that is graduate student friendly, and I'm more than willing to have roommates (in fact, one might call that a necessity). Does anyone know which apartment complexes would be a good fit for a person in my situation? As always, I thank you in advance for any feedback!
  2. Does anyone know the best way to find roommates if you're an out of state student?
  3. the FAFSA people almost gave me a coronary. They really need to get their ducks in a row!

  4. I'm looking to go to grad school to get a master's of education, but I have no intention of teaching; I plan on being a school counselor. Does anyone know if I would still be eligible for federal TEACH Grants?
  5. By the way, I haven't accepted their offer yet, but I'm 99.99% sure UF is where I'm going. I don't really know much about the area, except that when I went down there for a visit/interview I thought it was beautiful and weather suited me nicely. Anyone have any info on where to live/not to live?
  6. Hello all, I was recently accepted into my top choice school, as well as my safety school. I'm almost certain that I'm going to end up at my top choice, but should I hold out and wait for my second choice to get back to me to see if they offer me anything in the way of funding and try and use that as leverage with my top choice? Granted, I know that almost no one in my field gets funding for master's level work, but is it worth trying?
  7. Just saw where other people were starting topics for other schools, and I thought perhaps I should start one for Florida. Feel free to post!
  8. By UT do you mean the University of Tennessee or the University of Texas?
  9. Well I called my top choice over their Spring Break and asked when they'd be sending out notifications, and they'd told me they put them in the mail the previous Friday. So I pried a little deeper, and asked if they knew whether or not I got in, fully expecting to get my feelings hurt, and it turns out that I did get in!!!
  10. Really not much for me to say, but I'm glad I don't have to make a decision like that. Here's to hoping you two make the right decision. Good luck.
  11. If you're significant other is willing to drop everything and move to wherever you're going to school then I think it would be be kind of cold not to bring them along for the trip. Obviously you wouldn't bring them to official program functions like interviews and the like, but it doesn't mean that they can't come on the trip to get a feel for the region; you know, like looking at potential apartments and finding out where the hangouts are. Granted, I'm not married, let alone engaged, but if I were I'd definitely bring them along. LadyL, That second reaction you got from that program just seems terribly cold blooded. I hope everything worked out for the best with that. Best of luck!
  12. I'd try to contact them and check. Most of the time I'd just say they probably haven't made a decision on you, but UT has a propensity for administrative and clerical errors in relation to a bevy of things (financial aid, admissions decisions, class scheduling etc.). Once you're enrolled there, you will come to know it, along with tens of thousands of other Vols, as the "Big Orange Screw". With that being said, Tennessee is an excellent school with great professors and and amazing research opportunities (their library is WONDERFUL!). Plus, Knoxville is an extremely fun town, and Volunteer sporting events are some of the most fun you will ever have (or so I hear). But yeah, back to my original point, I'd just call them up and ask when they expect to notify people of decisions; you don't even have to give them your name if you're worried about seeming overeager. Good luck!
  13. Best of luck teaching... they're laying 'em off left and right (both good teachers and bad teachers)down here! Damn budget cuts! Anyway, best of luck!
  14. That's what I've been told as well, not only from other applicants, but from people working in admissions at schools that I have applied to.
  15. I have no idea how to play, and I'm interested to see what others say, but I think that most graduate students, in all parts of the country manage to make it on whatever stipend they get. One of my best friends just finished his master's degree and he lived off of a small stipend for two years. Granted, he's single without any kids, but he still made enough to go to the grocery store, buy things he wanted, and have a social life. I guess instead of drinking Bud Light you'll have to switch to Natural Light (or, if I get in, I'll have to go from Natural Light to Busch Ice). I don't know the specifics of your stipend, but you make it sound like its decent, and the standard of living in Ohio is a whole lot lower than New York City. Best of luck to you!
  16. Yeah, Barnes & Noble sends me crap constantly, as does Facebook. It is really annoying. It is made all the more annoying by the fact that my email is linked to my phone, so whenever I get an email, my phone buzzes or rings, and then the adrenaline starts pumping, and then I discover its from B&N or Redbox or something else irrelevant. I need to hear back soon!!!
  17. If you're looking for baller weather and a good time at a great school, I'd say go for Arizona, but that's just me. In my opinion, American is in the most boring part of DC, but it is a great school. I don't know much about the other two schools. One of my mantras when selecting schools is this: try and go to the best school you can get into for the cheapest price. Another mantra is that you have to enjoy the location of the school you're attending; academics is extremely important, but of equal importance, at least to me, is quality of life. After all, who wants to spend X number of years being bored out of their mind while they're paying thousands of dollars to go to a school.
  18. If you get accepted at your dream school after you've already accepted another offer, I don't know that anyone would blame you for following your dreams. After all, you're the one that's gotta do all the work after you get in, so shouldn't you at least enjoy yourself while you're doing it, if at all possible?
  19. You've gotta keep in mind that the people doing the interviews were once in the same position as you, and as such, expect you to have applied to other schools. Now, with that being said, there is no way I'd go into an interview and start talking about other schools I've applied to/ received offers from without the interviewer approaching the subject first.
  20. I'm not telling anyone except for those closest to me until its a definite, because I currently work in a field in the throes of severe budget cuts, and I figure if I made it a well known thing that I was planning on going back to school that I'd be one of the first people they wouldn't bring back in for next year. I'd like to have the option to continue working next year if things don't work out with admissions in the coming weeks. With that being said, I'm at the very bottom of the totem pole and its likely positions that I'm seeking will be gone in the next few months anyway. I guess another big reason I'm not telling that many people is because some people wouldn't understand why I want to go back to school, and I don't feel like explaining that reason every other day until school starts in August. Now that I've said all of that, if I get into my top choice it is going to be extremely hard to go the next several months without telling people where I'm going. Best of luck to everyone!
  21. I don't know about not owning anything that's not dry-clean only, but I do believe that, if you're a man, you should always wear a suit to anything official.
  22. This might sound dumb, but I have heard about people getting decision emails and them getting stuck in their spam folder. Have you checked there? Best of luck!
  23. Edgar Allan Poe dropped out of both the University of Virginia and West Point. He also married his 13 year old cousin. All of this is according to Wikipedia, so it is, without a shadow of a doubt, true. A side note to all you PhD applicants: profs love it when you cite Wikipedia in doctoral-level work; it shows that you are willing to look where no else will look for credible information! Its kind of like when Indiana Jones went looking for the Holy Grail. Or, better yet: PhD students who look to Wikipedia for papers are what Yukon Cornelius is to the Island of Misfit Toys. As always, best of luck to all applicants!
