  1. This is just like the SAE video that's been floating around... Same entitled, sheltered people. It's so upsetting.
  2. 7 months later and my SO finally has a full time job in his field!!! Hooray!

I have another friend with the same degree, took her about that long to land a FT gig in a environmental water testing lab. It's tough out there in science!

The job he wound up getting there didn't even advertise. He sent them a resume in August (!!) and they just now interviewed him for a position. I give him a lot of credit, I would've been so discouraged by now. He worked part time here and there to keep busy during this super fun process. Downside is I'm going to have to start cooking and cleaning...haha.

  4. So I managed to survive this winter without real winter boots and I am realizing I need to invest in a pair for next winter. Any suggestions? I know LL bean makes great boots but I personally find them so ugly.
  5. If you need helping picking a specialization, look up some journal articles from various areas. What excites you? What bores you to tears? For me personally I can tell pretty quickly. I would look into REU/SURF programs to help you get more research experience as well. These can also get you exposed to more areas of research and help you realize where your passion is.
  6. I don't know about your specific program but I can tell you that a Penn State degree is a Penn State degree regardless of campus. Also, the hospital and the biomedical research all happens at Hershey, so it's not like it's not a good campus, it's just specialized for medical research.
  7. Thank you! I find it summed up my experience well. I am also obsessed with Steinbeck.
  8. Iowa Creative Writing (fiction), MFA (F15) Rejected via Postal Service on 9 Mar 2015 A 9 Mar 2015 Iowa rejection = badge of honor. Proud token on my female hero's journey. Also, shocked no one has tried to use this thread as a dating forum...there is a lot of ambition/loneliness here This whole thing confuses me....
  9. Hahahahah omg this one may be my favorite
  10. My PI forgot about a prospective student... Good thing he only lives 15 minutes from campus. We desperately need to recruit... Hope the student didn't take it personally.

This sounds like something my current PI would do. When I was new, he forgot about meetings with me constantly. He still forgets meetings sometimes.

  11. My school is SO unhelpful when it comes to taxes. They don't pull taxes from my fellowship automatically, and don't give W2s or 1098Ts. WTF

I'm pretty sure your school is required to send you your W-2 form by Jan 31 by law. You definitely need to talk to your financial office. For me, I got my 1098T online and W-2 online (W-2 used to mail to my local address).

And I got my money back in first week of February.

I'm on a University fellowship that isn't taxed through the school and they don't report it... Hence no forms. I got a "fellowship disbursement form" which shows how much I made... But supposedly any tuition paid for you is also taxable. I'm lucky my dad has an accountant I can use who is helping me with all of this crap.

Update: found the 1098T online. The office I've been emailing told me they didn't exist... *eyeroll*

  12. My SO is SO much more passive (nicer?) than me. (Probably a good thing...) his manager at work is treating him like crap and being a psycho and I just want to go in there and make her cry... And he's just like "it's not worth it!" Fjsjehdndndnf I know he's right but damn, if that was me I would be reacting so much differently.
  13. I felt like this for a while my senior year in high school. Family problems made me reclusive and push everyone away, and I adopted some pretty bad habits I still have. The best advice I can give is just go one day at a time. Be easy on yourself. When no one else is around, you need to be your biggest supporter. You may have some days where you lay in bed, and that's okay. Try to identify what makes you happy or relaxed and what stresses you out. If people offer to listen (and you trust them) then vent. I made the mistake of not thinking that people cared, when so many people actually did. Above all, put yourself first. A PhD will be a part of you. Not all of you, or what defines you. If you need a break from school or anything else, take it. Mental health comes first. Personally, video games and reading help me to refresh. Or taking a long drive. I hope this helped... I'm sure I speak for a lot of us on here when I say we're all here if you want to vent about it or talk about something to distract you.
  14. That is not my sentiment at all. I was simply trying to understand the rationale behind why someone would choose to do that. I don't think anyone here was faulting anyone who chooses to do that in any way.
  15. In an email just to me: Please be aware that REU selection has many constraints which operates under a number of conditions/preferences besides perceived applicant quality: prearranged distribution of 1 REU per faculty, maintaining diversity in class year, gender, geography, and underrepresented groups participation, and exclusion of non-US citizens or resident. Some of this is promoted by NSF. Therefore, we end up excluding many exceptional students like yourself from the program and it in no way reflects how a graduate school application would fair. It was nice to hear, I guess. Hahahah. They pushed really hard for me to apply. I didn't wind up applying in the end.
  16. One of my REU rejections basically said how awesome I was but cited the NSF's minority clause for why I didn't get the REU. like wut.
  17. Personally, I made the selfish decision choosing a graduate school. But for me and my long term boyfriend, my career is going to be the one setting the foundation for our future family. It really depends on how serious you are about each other, I suppose. My boyfriend did make the move with me. As he says, he's supporting me emotionally now so I can support him financially later it really is a personal decision, do whatever makes you happiest.
  18. I hate this mentality so much. It's so unhealthy. I have a friend in my cohort who no matter how bad things are for you, things are always worse for her. I hate it. We all vent about stupid shit sometimes, it's not a contest. Also being so busy that you don't eat isn't cool either... I don't get why "I didn't even have time for lunch today!" Is a badge of honor. No wonder academics drive themselves absolutely insane...
  19. Not to be stereotypical but you only live once. I would love to work at Starbucks. Quit your job if it makes you that unhappy. It's not worth it.
  20. As soon as I signed my Penn State letter I declined the other one. It was terrifying... Haha. You work so hard for these acceptances and in the end you can only take one!
  21. You have an interview that hasn't even happened yet. Channel your energy into preparing and doing awesome. Get off GradCafe if comparing yourself to others is hurting more than helping. All you can do now is work with what you have.
  22. This cold is kicking my ass all over the place. Also can germs be transmitted to my students from the lab reports I'm grading? (probably should know this as ''microbiology'" is in the name of my degree...)

  23. I'm currently a first year at PSU so if you have any questions about State College let me know!
  24. My undergrad advisor says getting off the wait list basically means you're the bottom of the barrel for the incoming class. If you get in somewhere right away, it's likely they want you more badly than wait list school.
  25. A word of caution- there is a crazy prof at my school who is notorious for having students switch. One poor woman tried to be honest and tell him she was leaving. He promptly told everyone in the department how horrible she was and basically made it impossible for her to find a new lab. Then another guy who switched made sure everything was arranged with his new PI before telling the old one. Obviously he was angry, but this guy got to stay. So I would be selfish here, personally. If you have to burn a bridge, just burn one, not all of them.
