  1. Yes! This is solid advice. The semester I took Calc 3, biochem 2, pchem 2, analytical chem, and biophysical chem in the same semester it almost pushed me to the limits of my sanity. At least only one required a lab!
  2. This reminds me of when I was a kid and I would do something stupid and my parents would be fighting and one would say "YOU go take care of YOUR daughter!" As if I only belonged to one of them... I'm sure they wouldn't even remember but for some reason that really bothered me as a kid.
  3. I feel like the profs you were interested at Penn State are the exact profs I rotated with... Haha
  4. I was 20 when I interviewed early at the school I ended up at. I did have to explain myself quite a few times (in NY you can go to kindergarten when you're 4, no I'm not a prodigy, etc) but no one really minded. The drinking part is really just to get to know the graduate students, skipping it won't really affect the adcom in my opinion.
  5. My distrusting of doctors father is telling me I'm wasting my money on my endoscopy and colonoscopy. He thinks I'm just overweight and have a sensitive stomach. Everyone has medical degrees now huh?

Amazing, isn't it? I hope you find some answers with your tests. Good luck.

  6. I could go on parent rants for days... My mom is refusing to understand how I don't have summer off. She's been a teacher her whole life so she has that luxury... She doesn't get how I can't just leave if I don't have class.
  7. My father keeps attributing my possible Crohn's disease to me being a bit overweight and not eating well. Oh, okay. Because that made my ESR and antibodies high.
  8. I'm almost positive we're having another interview weekend Feb 27th weekend. PM me if you have any questions!
  9. All I remember about when Harvard BBS invites went out was that it was the Saturday before Christmas and I was working a day shift at my *fabulous* mall job at Hickory Farms when I checked gradcafe. If you're super ambitious you could dig through last years thread.
  10. Last year I remember Harvard BBS invites going out on a Saturday, so theres hope!
  11. Reasons I love grad school: Talking to people about "minding the satellite" over Christmas break is totally casual. Astrophysics O.O

  12. Last year I never got invited to interview, I just got accepted in late February. I'm hoping they revamped and now everyone gets to go... Their secretary is extremely helpful (I think her name is Anne) so you can shoot her an email to see what's up this year. Edit: this was for MCB. I believe the person who mentioned an interview was for BMS, a different program.

Didn't MIT do this last year?

@Vene Yeah, I believe MIT did this with some kind of engineering grad students last year.

  13. Snacks. In the two interviews I had we had weird downtime when we go in or random other times. Some granola bars will keep you much happier.
  14. Meeting with my top choice prof at 1, hoping for good news! The other woman who wants to join has been running her mouth nonstop about how she won't take either of us... hoping to prove her wrong!

Ah man that stinks. At least it's not a "no", I guess?

  15. I had this happen to me last year from Boston U PiBS and then they strung my along for months and rejected me.... so, yeah. Haha.
  16. That privilege image is everything I try to explain but can't ever find the words. Privilege is only bad if you refuse to recognize it. Use your privilege powers for good!
  17. Talked to my professor... I'm on track for a B-, and I should get an A in everything else... meaning I end with a 3.26 which is greater than a 3.0 which is ALL THAT MATTERS. Wooooo

Same situation here. Although grading here is a little lenient so I end up with a 3.33

Thanks everyone! I've learned to take every piece of advice with a grain of salt... my grad student "mentors" were giving me false information, it turns out. So much more relaxed after talking to the prof.

Great, that's awesome! You'll crush grad school. I'm clinging to an A in my big core class, and can't do better than a B in my other, but so glad to be almost done!

peachypie- when I first read the post I thought what I posted above^, that shadowclaw was saying "my situation is looking better than yours", and I downvoted it. I read it again because I was surprised that anyone would say something comparative like that and I realized that I had misunderstood shadowclaw. She was simply updating us on her situation as she had been doing the last few posts. I felt bad for downvoting so quickly, but I am confused as to how it accomplished -5 rep...I th...

^it cut me off! The last part of my post said I thought I made a dumb mistake and I don't understand why 4 other people disliked it (unless they misinterpreted it the way I did)

^I think crowd behavior/priming, maybe?! If you see a post with a couple of downvotes, you probably are going to interpret it using that info, maybe in a negative way. Plus, if you see a post with like 5 downvotes, it's a lot easier to go along and add one yourself

  19. Also remember that the fraction of applicants who use GradCafe are generally skewed towards the top-tier applicants. A lot of people on this forum got interviews at UPenn, but we're also not a good sample size. UPenn is an Ivy and by nature will be competitive. Then again, pretty much all graduate programs can be described as competitive in some fashion.
  20. @pasteltomato I had boots that were black and looked like leather (can't afford real leather obvs). Black always seems to look dressier to me than brown. Basically, boots that aren't uggs/ugg knockoffs. I just got a new pair from Payless since my old pair got eaten by salt for pretty cheap.

  22. Joining in on the interview clothes struggle- last year target had great dressy grey slacks that were skinny, so you could tuck them into boots. (Great for northeast interviews!) I splurged on a nice suit jacket and some blouses to match. I had good luck at Banana Republic (although expensive) and I believe my jacket came from New York & Co. For more relaxed days I wore cardigans, dark jeans, and boots.
  23. double post, curse you horribly slow Comcast wifi.
  24. Eating and gaining weight ---> feel like crap because you're overweight ---> tired so you don't want to work out ---> repeat
