  4. the interview process works differently for different schools and programs. in your case, if you are able to 'wow' him, it is most likely that he will hire you directly, and quite possibly there will be no lab rotations. but if the program mandates that you do rotate regardless, then you have no choice but to go with the rules. if their program also requires each prospective student to interview with few profs, then they might still make you go through all the interviews even after knowing that he wants to hire you and you only. i was in a similar boat, and they made me talk to other profs as well.

  8. let's all (of us who are still single) pray to the valentine god on this year's valentine day that we find our valentine in grad school. (the hidden message here is that the valentine god will first have to make sure that we get in into grad school. and on top of that, he has to find a valentine for us once we get in. one shot, two kills. not shabby, eh?)

thanks! and to you as well! i visited the st paul campus a couple weeks ago for the interview/recruitment thing. i liked it. snow was everywhere, of course, but the 'feel' of the place was good. although we didn't get to see most of the city, the part surrounding the campuses are pretty good. lots of restaurants, shops, etc. so far, i think i like it. i have one. can you provide any whereabouts regarding motorbike parking? how many spots on each campuses, free/contract $$, etc? thanks

  23. ditto happened to me. their dept website was not clear about if i should contact the profs before, or after the application, or if i should contact them at all. it's partially my fault that i wasn't proactive enough, and didn't contact my PoIs. but c'mon. the dept should be very clear about the process too. not like we are oracles or gypsies! - how the hell do we know what the next step is. anyway, i contacted a couple profs whose research interested me the most, but they weren't taking any students. dead end. they suggested that i transfer my application to a similar program in the same college, but i said no thank you. i also found out, very late, that i wasn't given funding because the head of the dept and the guy who is in charge of allocating funds for new grad students, are not in good speaking terms. i was like WHAAAAAT!? they are playing with our future man! /end soapbox.
  24. good idea. if you are 100% certain, you should. i got into the program i wanted to join, so i already withdrew from one my my safeties. there are a couple more schools i am interested in, mainly for getting to know the professors, their project, building professional bridges, comparing facilities, and all that. but i think i will withdraw from remaining 2 safeties so that someone else can get in and not have to bear the excruciating pain of waiting/being waitlisted.
