it certainly does! thanks a bunch. i still have a long wait till i head to minneapolis... so i should be able dig some more and make up my mind by the time i move. hi there! glad to meet another UMN attendee i am thinking almost the same... preferably a jeep-type vehicle or similar. although blurinoutline mentioned that gas is $$, i don't drive very much - only to groceries and for running errands (i've barely put 2k miles on my car this year). so the gas price shouldn't bite me that hard, no matter what kind of vehicle i bring.
  2. also, funding situation. if you apply to a mediocre or backup school, the funding sources might not be able to provide you competitive stipend, compared to others. they would definitely want you there, if you are qualified (or overqualified). but they might have to let you go if they think you will get better offer somewhere and you will end up in a better place with more money and not there. this is similar to the med school example given above. but then i think, why do schools develop inferiority complex?

  4. like above people said, the chances are very high, but it depends on the program. if they flew you out, wined and dined you, that means you are their top candidate and have strong chances of getting in. i mean, they wouldn't spend their resources on you if they didn't want you on the first place. they like you, and that's why they invited you... so that both you and them could get a feel of each other on a personal level. i got a phone call this afternoon from the PoI i want to work with, and i interviewed at this university a couple weeks ago (they paid everything). i was freaking out as well, because i was the one with the lower hand. but things turned out well. so, hang in. you should be getting the good news through phone or email in a few days.
  5. a guy who works in the same lab as i do got his invite almost 3 weeks ago from the EEB program. they are flying him out for interview at the end of this month. but he wants to go horticulture science (that's what he keeps telling me), so i have no idea why he even applied here.

Thanks to all the users above for the info and tips. I have a vehicle-related question. When I visited the city last month, humongous snow piles were on both sides of the roads, and a plethora of cars were seen buried/semi-buried in the snow. That kinda scared me. Also, my car is rear wheel drive, which is horrible for snowy conditions. Therefore, I am tempted to get a truck when I move here. Would owning a truck (vs a car) somehow better your life during snowy days? Experiences? Suggestions?
  7. this is my personal opinion, and you might want to take this with a grain of salt, but i see that (accepting) this has tragedy written all over it. first, no funding. second, it's still early in the application season to hear from schools... committing right away doesn't sound right (at least for me). third, you still haven't heard from other schools. and last, you said it's your worst school? there's no rush. if you are confident about getting in into other programs, pass this one up. or tell them that you can't come unless you have some sort of support from the program. who knows, they might throw at some stipend money.
