I've only got super reaches expected this week, and maybe rejections or (hopefully..!) waitlist notifications from a few implied reject schools. Though acceptances by phone were out a couple days before, I'm kind of hanging onto an unfounded hope that email notifications (for international students) are yet to be sent.

I'm totally failing on the side of self care, so I'll be waiting for other people's responses. I just... shudder at the idea of moving my body more than is absolutely necessary... Where I live, the cold and hot seasons are pretty drastic. So wherever I get to go in the states, I hope the weather is more consistent, so that I can start biking or jogging on a regular basis. I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and try to get some exercise. I think, at some point, exercise could become a priority in grad school life, so that I can finish my studies...

I understand your having impostor syndrome, but try thinking that the people you are going to meet are not, hopefully, judgmental nor stupid? This is a tact I use when I present at conferences.

What will you do if you get your first acceptance letter?

I jumped out of my bed and screamed about it to my father. My mother thought I found a muffin I had hidden and forgot about. -
Rethinking already submitted statement of purpose

You might not be in the mood to accept this comment, but congratulations on submitting your application! It's great that you submitted it. I think a few focused months of writing is enough. But if you're going to keep working in academia, I think you should get used to showing your manuscript to more people. I know that's difficult and I'm hypocritical to say so, because I had only my adviser look at my SOP and writing sample What's done is done, but I totally feel for your overthinking. It will be difficult, but save your fourth comment for another writing you'll have to do in the future! I wish you good luck! -
Congratulations on your fellowship!!

Oh yes... that hope that an office might decide to send out emails first thing in the morning surely keeps us up late into the night... I don't know which would be better, being up when offices are working, or asleep at office worktimes. I guess it'll be devastating anyway around

Waiting for emails must be harsh on everyone, but I want to talk about time difference. When I wake up, most business hours in US have ended. And a new day starts in America when it's nearly time to sleep for me. All day checking results and forums, and then it's night over there so no news. And then going to sleep looking at new rejections and acceptances, hoping to get some news in the morning. And waking up to an empty mail box! Yay!

I was also thinking about this problem, and I just sent my thank you email, too! Thanks for your help

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?

I woke up to my cellphone alarm, and when I turned off the alarm, I saw an email notification. That was IT. -
@JustPoesieAlong I hope you get contact from other schools in the couple weeks to come. It must be really hard to make schedules work when you're working. My field is Victorian novels, and I try to make connections between the novel form and context. I see that you work on Early Modern Literature!

@Warelin Thank you

@JustPoesieAlong Hi! maybe that's me you're talking about. Congratulations on your acceptance! It's a great relief, and though I have a long list of schools I'm still waiting to hear back from, one of my most wanted(?) professors are at TAMU, so it's a great start for me. I'd really like to go to the March event, but I live so so far away, I don't think I can afford it (money and time) even with the aid. Do you plan to go?

Hi people. I hope everyone starts getting some relieving news from schools. I just got my first result letter, and I was wondering if it was common practice to reply to the email. The tone was pretty nice, so I started to think I had to, but I might not if it's not common practice or courtesy.

I think Word Smart for GRE was good. Starting from that, I added Kaplan word power, Word Smart I+II to make a bigger list of words.

I tried 7 practice tests over 2 weeks prior to my actual exam. And here goes my scores. 1st GRE (March 2013) : V 158 / Q 164 / AW 4.0 Kaplan practice tests : V 162, 162, 167, 162, 160 (Sorry, I just skipped Q sections) Princeton Review practice test : V 167 ETS Power Prep : V 166, 162 (Q sections skipped again) (these practice tests were taking during the second half of August) 2nd GRE (August 2013) : V 167 / Q 163 / AW 4.0 My conclusion was that the practices tests are deliberately difficult.
