Human_ reacted to Balladeer in GRE: Any way to dodge this elaborate, money-making scam?
Well, the real scam starts after you take the test. Pay up $18-25 for every score dispatch! No, it cannot be viewed online (even the though the very test you took was online). Even the universities play ball. Then ETS sends your score after weeks. Yes, weeks! You are lucky if you didn't miss a few deadlines if you took the test a little late (especially if you applied to Europe).

But you don't have a choice. Somehow it has contributed in diminishing my faith in higher education system. But then again, I don't have a choice either.

Well, respected enough to be given an academic chair at the age of 24. Of course, he retired after a short time, but my only point was that he actually proved himself within the academic community.

So basically you're saying space and time are a priori intuitions? How is this any different than Kant? What does gravity have to do with anything?

Many of your premises are also illogical.

    1/10 would not read again.

Could you find a less shitty way of saying you dislike someone than saying they have a mental health problem?

    I don't think it fits.

You can work with story 1, but story 2 is very general and boring and your phrasing in certain areas could be interpreted as offensive.

They want to see why you have a passion and drive for success, not that you're a nice person.

    Fix the passive tense.

    for example:
I was able to take -> I took

The paper will read much better.

Also, using a slash is too informal in this sentence:
This paper sparked my interest in neuroendocrinology/sexuality.

A slash doesn't connect the two words. Instead, say something like:
This paper sparked my interest in the intersection between neuroendocrinology and sexuality.

Also, "sparked my interest" is a colloquial term and should probably be avoided in this type of writing:
This paper intrigued me to examine the intersection between neuroendocrinology and sexuality.

    You get the idea.

Yeah, that totally does not work. You have two essays at work. First, you're writing about your family's medical problems and the issues that go with that. Then you're writing about your experiences with racism (other people's oppression) and what you learned about it. The only real link between the two is locative, not thematic. Subject X is this, then we moved, and Subject Y is that. No connection. Your essay should be a unified whole, not separate. Your father got sick and your family lost its livelihood. Your diversity in there, so work with that.

If you want to discuss your experiences with racism, approach it in a completely different way. Right now, that's offensive in the way the Disney Pocahontas and James Cameron's Avatar is offensive. If you don't know why Pocahontas and Avatar can be considered offensive, then google White Messiah. It's an old story. Unless you learned something substantive and human about race, don't talk about race. It's difficult for white people to talk about race problems without making boneheaded statements, like your White Messiah example, that just hurts your case. It doesn't matter how genuine or caring you are when your approach to the writing make it clear that you didn't get some key points about diversity. I figure you're white not because of your picture, but because you referred to the minority students as "they," which puts you directly into the "us" category with the white bullies.

Work with your own, personal experiences. You come from blue collar, dealing with disabilities, and whatnot. Diversity is more than skin color. What can you do with your family's experiences to help your fellow students understand diversity? How can your family experience help you help other students "gain access to the resources necessary for success."

Human_ reacted to TakeruK in Denied LOR...out of spite?
I have no idea why you went on that train of thought in trying to justify why she said no to your LOR request. I understand that you may be emotionally invested in this but from an outsider's perspective, your reasoning makes no sense at all.

I think you might be approaching the situation in the wrong way. I am not saying you are a bad student nor that you won't make it into grad school. Your professor's refusal to write an LOR also does not mean that you are a bad student and won't make it into grad school. All the refusal means is that your professor cannot write you a supportive LOR because of your performance in her class and your eventual grade in her class. It doesn't matter how much she knows you outside of class, it doesn't sound like this prof supervised your work, so the only role she can take as a letter writer is "Student's Instructor". As your instructor, the only basis she can write her LOR on is your performance in her class. Anything else would just be a personal recommendation, not a professional recommendation, and graduate school admission committees do not care at all about personal recommendations.

It's definitely true that not every single class was important and that even if you made the right decision to slack off in this class (presumably to spend that time doing something more important to your personal or career goals right?), getting a B- is a very good reason for the prof to refuse to write you a LOR as your instructor. Let me say it again to make it really clear:  You asked for a letter of reference from someone who would be writing your LOR as the role of your instructor, and thus would have to comment on your performance in her class, not your general desires and capabilities. So I am not sure why you are surprised when this person refused to write you a letter on the account of the fact that you did poorly in this class. I would doubt that this prof thinks that you are unfit for grad school, but just that she is the wrong person to ask for a LOR!

Remember that LORs in STEM fields should ideally come from research supervisors and a "did well in class" type letter is not ideal. So, from that logic, it would make sense that all your "did well in class" letters better have come from the classes where you were the top student or close to the top!

Finally, I feel like you were expecting everyone you ask to actually say yes, and that the only reason for "no" you would expect is something not related to you, such as the prof being too busy, not that you were not good enough. When this did not turn out the way you expected, you searched for other reasons for her refusal, again all of these reasons you think up are not related to you. Rejection sucks, but sometimes it might help to accept that you may have caused this (by slacking off and getting that B-) and figuring out what to change in the future, instead of looking for other places to shift blame. Ultimately, I agree with Lisa44201--I'd be thankful that I got a real rejection and not have to hand in a LOR that said I got a B- in that class (the committee can easily match up your LOR with the grade on your transcript). Also, I think that getting rejected with a real reason is a sign of mutual respect between you and this prof. If I did not care about a student, I would brush them off with excuses or ignoring them until they went away.
