Cottagecheeseman reacted to logos0516 in Waiting to hear from a few departments
I am waiting to hear from University of Virginia, as I am on their waitlist. Paul Humphreys sent out an email this past Thursday updating us on the situation. He in part said the following: "What we do know is that a couple of our candidates to whom offers have been made will not be in a position to make their decisions before April 13th. Because of the large financial commitment attached to each offer, our Graduate School is very reluctant to allow any department to enroll more students than their allotted number."

I take it this means: a couple, i.e. two, candidates cannot get back to him (Paul) about their offers before April 13th, presumably because they are waitlisted in other programs and want to hear from them first before they make a decision. Second, I take the second sentence to mean: look, we have a waitlist, but our enrollment is strictly capped by the Graduate School, so we won't be making many offers from the waitlist if we even do, so don't get your hopes up.

Does that seem like a reasonable assessment?

Look, we can sit here wasting time trying to parse the semantics of Paul Humphrey's letter, or we can face facts. *The bottom line* is, that more offers are *possible*, though the odds are *long* that any one candidate will see an offer.....remember what I wrote a few posts ago, about how Paul said enrollment is very strictly limited by the Graduate School? He said that for a *reason*- so we wouldn't think that they are going to make several more offers, like one poster suggested here on I think page 18, the one who had visited UVA with the other 2 people who were admitted. Another guy said there are 26 people in total being admitted and on the waitlist. That means, minus the 5-6 they admitted, that there are *at best* 2 spots for 20 people- *assuming* that *both* of the people who said they can't get back about their offer before April 15th, don't take UVA's offer. And what would make anybody think that the offer on the results page was fake? Because it suits your belief that there is still a very good chance of getting into UVA? At some point, ladies and gentlemen, we all have to start getting realistic about our prospects at UVA this year. Paul Humphrey went out of his way in that email to be very cautious, and not offer *one word* of encouragement. And by the way, he said that he would be in touch if they make any *further* offers from the waitlist, implying that one, and perhaps more, offers had been made from the waitlist already, thus offering a response to the poster above who thought the admission on the results page was "fake." It is a very difficult thing to try to adjust to a disappointing reality, but believe me, the sooner you go through that process, the sooner you will find peace.

On another note, that makes so much sense about my situation. I was probably viewed as overqualified at every school I applied to. I am pretty sure they viewed my application and said that this person should already apply to a tenure-track position. I am not sh*t after all .

In case you're interested in programs that are not Leiterific,

The University of Florida has three students who have received offers from PhD programs. Offers include Arizona State University (UR), SUNY Albany (UR), SUNY Binghamton (UR), and Wisconsin (22).

I think the point is to provide a safe space to talk. We saw what happened with the other female philosophers thread, and how a few misogynistic males pretty much took over the thread. I'm not female, so this is just my two cents on the issue. But I think sometimes having a discussion only among those of a minority group that has frequently been disparaged in a way that doesn't attract attention and allows themselves to express themselves without having to worry about reprisal.

This is the calm before the storm. In two years we will SLAY. You'll get into Chicago or Columbia or something, and I'll get into USC or Princeton or something.
And people are going to be like "HOWD YOU DO IT" and we'll be like:

If I could go back to any decade, it'd be back to when positivism was a viable philosophy. What a grand time that was.

Sure, my AOIs are ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology. Maybe more people took their names off the waitlist, but I didn't see so many say so on the grad cafe results page, I think one person said they were taking their name off. But of course, more people than that should be taking their name off. My question is, if more people take their names off the waitlist, do they then add more people to the waitlist? So lets say, exaggerating of course, that if there are originally 20 people on the waitlist, and 18 take their names off, do they put another 18 people on the waitlist? Or do they just stick with the remaining 2 they have and make offers to them? I would say realistically there must be about 12-14 people firmly on the waitlist, for about 2-3 spots, meaning, those 12-14 want to be on the waitlist and would attend UVA. I was generous and assumed 8 people took their names off the list already.

I had a dream the other night where I had memory in my dream of a dream I had months ago but in my waking life I had completely forgotten about. I dunno why but I find that supremely interesting.

Also you didn't need to hint I know who you were talking about

I just had a dream where we (this forum members) were all in a classroom and some professor was giving a lecture. There was one student who was sitting in the front making some hostile comments while the professor was talking. I knew right away who he was . I have been on this forum for way too long!
