We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016

So, I'm not sure if this ever came up, what sort of museums do you like? Or would like to work at? If you ever manage your way to Oklahoma, we have some pretty quirky museums. -
is grad school what you expected? how important is prestige?

Congrats. Good luck with your decision! -

At least we're not in the arts/architecture. They have to sometimes send entire physical portfolios in the mail. Can you imagine how expensive that'd get? -
Added mine. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to remove the green fill from the fellowship/scholarship cell....

There's several government repayment plans that base one's payments on one's income, and these programs excuse debt after you've paid long enough, assuming you haven't already paid off said loans. However, your loan amount that's excused is counted as taxable income the year its eventually excused, so if you have 100k excused, you're going to have to pay a lot of taxes. Hopefully this is reformed 20-30 years from now, because it's going to crush people. -
You know RPI never got around to sending me a rejection. I gave up.

Probably! Wouldn't surprise me. -

Then they are subsidized. https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans/subsidized-unsubsidized#subsidized-vs-unsubsidized "You are responsible for paying the interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan during all periods." They won't charge you for it (e.g., month to month), but the interest is still growing. -

Depends on the student loans. Many of mine are subsidized, but several are not. The unsubsidized ones still accrue interest. Point of interest: You do not have access to subsidized stafford loans in graduate school. *insert sad trombone song* -

I'm at around $29,000 here. But it's going to get compounded interest come August. Eh well. I'll probably end up taking a couple thousand per year for the next three years. I think we're all doing pretty good, though! -
I have a feeling it means I'll have an uphill climb. I've often gotten the impression that many historians think my research isn't even worthwhile, at least outside of the department I'm currently in. Maybe I should take it as a sign that I should focus on more DH and library science journals. Things to think about.

Congrats! I'm so happy for you!

It's almost baffling how one review can give me very good for broader impacts and one can give me poor. That last person must have really hated my proposal.

Ah ha! Found something. In case anyone else needs something similar, here's a link: http://www.dormco.com/The_College_Cube_Dorm_Desk_Bookshelf_p/tccdb-cubebook.htm

I guess I can't complain too much. I do have funding, although it is far, far less than what the NSF GRFP would have provided. I wish the reviewers weren't so mysterious. I don't even know if my reviewer three was a historian. I suspect not, given that they thought my research project was too inductive. I mean... it's history? I can't study history like I could study science.
-
Yeah, same. I got good responses from two reviewers, and a double poor from the third. Eh well. Guess there's something to polish for later.

Rofl. "Why do you have so many tables? Did you go to Ikea?"

Congrats! -
I think it's another reason why I'll wait until year two to reapply. If I'm successful enough in graduate school, they can't complain about my undergraduate experiences as much.
-
Good luck!

I used to have an issue with being introverted, but I'm okay with it now. I float around in my own little world, especially when I'm at home. ~550 square feet would be a small-medium apartment, and certainly not too small by my standards. I think I'd need around 150 square feet to be comfortable. I have too many books and whatnot. I can't imagine getting rid of my books, although I think I'm going to pick up a tablet and start going e-book for most titles, if available. -
I have pretty terrible luck, so I plan contingencies for everything. There's no way I could have made it as far as I have if I didn't.
-
Second year. My research is on a topic that many think is somewhat worthless to pursue. I'll probably need to present and/or publish in hopes that my findings support a larger-scale implementation.
-
This made me chuckle a bit. I know we're being a bit harsh, but they do read quite a lot of these.

That sounds similar to the history of science department here. About a book per week with a response paper, and a littering of other assignments along the way. Bordering on the pretty heavy, but definitely doable, as long as one doesn't slack. Good thing I like to read. But ever are some academics terrible writers. Makes some books a slog.
