We should start a support group/thread. Also, my parents have drowned my daughter's room in toys. I eventually told them that if they buy anymore they have to stay at their house. Ergh.

Doesn't surprise me, but it's nice to hear from another not-so-traditional applicant. Other than Mr./Mrs. "I found poo in my cheerios" reviewer, I was pretty happy with my other feedback. They were positive, and they agreed that my research did hold merit. Their complaints were more targeted with how I constructed my proposal, and I definitely agree with their comments. The last reviewer should have just said "LOLZ UR DUMB". It might have been less cutting.

Not for me. A little bit curious what my letter writers said, but nothing was in my comments.

Sounds like an adventure! I happen to like adventures. I nest, so I do well in solitary spaces. In fact, I almost prefer smaller spaces over larger ones. If was single I'd totally get a tiny house. -
Congrats! And thanks for the well-wishes!

Woo hoo! Was it the one where you were about $50 short of the required income? Is it creepy that I remember that? -

Congrats! i got a flaming bag of poop, but now that it's over, I can move on and worry about something else. Good thing I have thick skin. -
I'm a bit afraid that my proposal was just too complex to explain in its entirety, and my reviewers ended up wanting more. I conducted an independent study to make my proposal, and the unedited version was far, far larger (around 15 pages, if memory serves). Cutting that down to 3 pages meant I had to cut out a lot of details. Might have to rethink the proposal next time.

I'm just curious, but what sort of load do you have at Bloomington? I find the differences in programs fascinating.
-
One didn't explicitly state so, but I got the impression they didn't like that it's taken a decade to finish my undergraduate. I guess excellent academic performance doesn't outweigh poverty and life circumstances. You know what my proposal should be next year? A community driven analysis as to what a "proper" research proposal is versus one that is not. If I could get a large enough sample size, it might be eye-opening how well their intention to reinforcing science's diversity is (or is not). Anyone got ideas how I could get large sample next year? Wait, did you get it?

This fantastic advice. I would hope one wouldn't need to spoon feed the points into the maws of reviewers, but I think it's probably apt to.
-
In a completely unrelated note... Anyone else have a headache from drinking too much last night while you awaited the results? Ugh.
-
Hope this benefits you @archersline.

Yup, I would. Don't they claim somewhere that it's a significant award, in it's own right (on the NSFGRFP website)? I also noticed that someone from my program who graduated about a year ago got a GRFP this year. I'll have to email a congratulations.

Thanks! I think I'll enjoy it. I love popular and cultural history, so novels are always apt. To be honest, I read a lot of stuff that isn't directly historical. There's a lot of books on science, technology, or medicine that inform my broader understanding of my research, so I'm always dipping toes into more popularly-targeted pools. I'll have to share my thoughts on Brave New World when I finish, and Free Radicals got a little better at the end, but I'm still unsure how much I agree with Brooks.

I'm staying at the University of Oklahoma. It really is the best place for me.

Shame these are so short. It's hard to propose something of any complexity in the length they require. My poor/poor reviewer baffles me. For example: "Although the applicant would use some automated methods, it is not clear what they would be intended to reveal." Seems the reviewer proposes I develop a certain measure of bias. In another passage, he claims the research would be too inductive. Well, it is history research. If history was deductive, then it wouldn't be a humanities, would it? And DH research is nearly always inductive. I'm not bitter or angry, but man, I really wanted some meaningful feedback. That last reviewer's comments are as useful as a bag of rocks. It makes me sad.
-
I echo your comments, but I'm not discouraged by my results. I just finished Free Radicals: The Secret Anarchy of Science by Brooks, and I feel as if I'm going to turn into a anarchist historian. That last reviewer just didn't get it, and I'll prove it, eventually.
-
Maybe we had the same reviewer. Who apparently reviewed proposals after a fifth of scotch. I'm history of science student, proposing a digital humanities project, on an oft disregarded topic. I think he just didn't like me, what I want to do, and how I wanted to do it.
-
I think someone pooped in my last reviewer's cheerios. I'm a little bit disappointed in my results. I didn't think I'd get it, but man, that last reviewer... Good/Good, Good/Very Good, Poor/Poor. The first two reviewers were fair in their assessment. The last reviewer was a callous jerk.

Yeah, I'm presenting at a university-wide conference this Saturday. I've done the presentation before, but it's still nerve-wracking.

I really want to try to their nitro oatmeal stout if I can find some. Oatmeal beer has grown on me last year or so. I love this stuff. http://tallgrassbeer.com/vanilla-bean-buffalo-sweat/?age-verified=8df86bca67

Yeah, I think I'm just going to get up at my normal time and check then. I like sleep too much. Yup! I think that's what most of us will do.

Coop F5. Founder's, eh? That stuff is generally pretty expensive, isn't it?
